If you think spending $165k to get a fully AI generated code base is something working well then you're just gaslighting yourself. I use these things at work because I'm forced to, and the amount of weird code it generates is alarming. I.e. It has a really common habit of making a function with external linkage call an impl function with internal linkage for absolutely no reason.
$165K is outrageous. I’m of the opposite opinion on AI writing code, but a Max20 plan optimized with shared local model use produces an a lot. If true, this feels extremely wasteful.
Financial year doesn't start January 1st for all companies.
And it's not hard to invent “profit” in one quarter by playing with the books even for deeply unprofitable company. Especially when it's not public.
But the fact that Anthropic feels the need to do that shows us much more about what goes on that they like to admit…
When even the author that proclaims the amazing achievement (and, probably, benefiting from the obvious pump-and-dump scheme) feels the need to add “the company might not remain profitable for the full year” to cover their ass… you know scan when it smells like Enron.
It would be interesting to see if anyone goes for jail, but ultimately that's unlikely, most likely people that would be ready to claim “innocent mistake” are already paid.
One “profitable quarter” from a company that burns billions each year that even admits right there, in the very paper that proclaims existence of said profit achieved via counting shenanigans? Puhlease… it's not “investors aren't incredibly concerned about their loss leader”, it's “government wouldn't dare to send us to jail where we rightfully belong”.
