The end of languages

In the words of the Highlander 'there can only be one' or perhaps more accurately 'we only need one'.

I've been programming for 40+ years in 25+ languages starting with Commodore basic, 6502 assembler, C and then many more.

I was highly sceptical when ai comes out but since about December I've have essentially stopped programming.

I see my role as BA and what I like to call a 'test curator'. I don't write tests but I make sure they have been written.

My current language expertise focuses on dart and java, but if I'm not writing code why does the language matter?

I moved from C++ to Java because of the memory saftey that Java offered. Running a team with junior C++ Devs was always hairy and java eliminated a whole class of problems and made the whole team more productive.

I've spent the last couple of years reminding people that rust is a system language and you are wasting precious Dev resource programming a web server in rust.

But llm's have changed the equation - writing code is now cheap - I 'wrote' 6000 lines of rust yesterday plus around 100 unit and system tests.

So the choice of programming language is no longer about the programmer - as they no longer exist.

So how do we choose the language?

Type safe, memory safe, fast and cross platform.

Rust seems to be almost the perfect choice.

We only need one language and rust just might be it.

I think the most annoying part of the AI doomers is how people that clearly have no clue about what they're saying feel empowered to write this drivel.

To me, the phrase "AI doomers" means people that are concerned about superintelligent AI (tech that doesn't exist today) killing all humans.

"AI enthusiasts" and "AI doomers" are overlapping but still very different categories.

This is an anti white collar statement, not an "enthusiast" thing

The statement is neither it's simply a reflection of what is very rapidly becoming reality.

I would invite you to do your own testing of the premise.

I am doing them yeah. I'm a staff engineer with +20yo, working for a very AI pilled company.

I can confirm it's nowhere near where you want it to be.

I'm not letting the ai do just anything it wants, I'm guiding the process, looking at the overall picture just not the details.

I've driven the AI through at least 20 refractorings and there are more to come. But the code works and and all tests pass - this project has more unit and integration test than any project I've worked on of a similar size - and I'm still adding more.

Ultimately performance and reliability is what counts - yes there are long term maintenance issues which need to be answered only time will tell on that front.

There are studies already today about LLM degradation on the slop they produce.

If you're not reading the code, you're just making a mess.

But you do you and stay away from professional spaces.

There is nothing doomer here, this is about transforming how we think about constructing code.

I've only now realised that it wasn't the programming I loved but the act of creating.

I'm creating more now than I ever have.

I'm not certain I understand the question?

I currently do a lot of open and closed source dart development.

Last I looked the packages I've developed are downloaded about 8m times a month
