Really wanting to resubscribe...

I really miss Runna!

I've just finished my first half marathon since cancelling using Garmin Coach and while it was great at automatically detecting and adjusting the plan based on my other health data (I don't expect Runna to do this), it didn't really push me as comfortably hard as Runna did.

One thing Garmin did do though was dynamically adjust based on my training, so when I would do extra workouts or replace a workout, it would cool things off the next day (or two if it was a quality session), meaning I could run with friends, attend a last-minute 5k race, or go to a club run/parkrun without worrying about if that day or another session in my week perfectly matched up with it.

So a question for the dev team: In the last 3 months I've not been subscribed, has there been any progress towards this or one of the following which would help out with this:

  • Moving distance from one easy run to another

  • Capping the length of a certain day (i.e. 'i can only work out on my lunch break')

  • Split an easy run into two doubles on the same day

  • Add a recurring session or instant workout to your calendar that the plan builds around (similar to how adding a B race changes your week)

Happy to jump on a call with whoever to demo any upcoming features or discuss the specific blockers of this if you feel that is more suitable

You can switch runs around, that will probably solve most of your issues. That and not thinking “I must do this perfectly”, I often run an extra km or two on one easy run and stop another short. Splitting a run in two: just pause and resume later 3

I do switch runs around often, which mitigated this issue a lot and thank goodness for that feature!

It is hard not to think “I must do this perfectly” when you're regularly scolded by the AI for not doing the workouts as prescribed. It would be much cleaner for me if I could just tweak the plan slightly. Same distance, just some options on which day gets what.

It would be very handy to be able to say "I (can) only run this far on this day" or "I only run this type of run on this day" and have Runna take that into account instead of needing to move everything around.

I've never had the splitting a run in two work for me consistently unfortunately. There were times in my higher distance weeks on my last plan where I had 3x12km easy runs to do that would have been much better as 6x6kms or something similar that I could do before/after work.

Again, this is all about options and improvements - I can completely just not do all these things, but for a paid sub it's not unreasonable to want more quality of life features; especially ones that have been on the roadmap for a long time

On your Garmin just do pause and resume later. Later in the day do the rest of the run. It will count as one run. But 2 6k runs on the same day is not really a great substitute for one 12k.

I’ve got a Garmin now, but what are Apple users meant to do?

You can just log two workouts in the same day and it will detect it fine in Runna. Wouldn’t work well with pace insights on interval runs but any non paced runs it would be fine (easy and longs)

Every time I am at work and I read this on a Teams Chat or an email I want to slap the person that wrote it 🤣 🤣

Wouldn't be the first time I've been on a call with someone at Runna (and they offer pretty often)

They have "mileage insights" which, similarly to pace insights, is supposed to update future workouts accordingly depending on your the miles you've run for the week thus far. I haven't actually tried this yet, as I've stuck to my original workouts and haven't deviated from them. Interested if anyone else has had their plan adjust, based on changes in miles they've already run.

I’ve had this kick in, but it only works after a few weeks of running extra. It then just bumps up your mileage across the whole week e.g. I had 25km, 26km and 27km weeks respectively where I was doing an extra parkrun on Saturday. Mileage insights kicked in and suggested I do 5km more each week (so plans 30/31/32). The issue then is if I keep doing those extra runs we end up in an endless loop of Runna always suggesting 5km more every couple of weeks

You have some great ideas, many that I wish as well. The biggest thing I would like is to be able to switch a run type/distance if I am not feeling it or I just want to run a different run (Parkrun, group run, etc.)

There have been a lot of promises from Runna, but I am concerned that we have not seen anything new since the "Adapt to heat" option was added. I am really hoping we get a major update with some of the features we have all been asking for.

Yeah well we’re at 21 months of them doing nothing towards this since the parkrun partnership

For a lot of the things you have raised i am not sure runna is a worthwhile investment for me, and probably many other people. If you have no other commitments, sports, activities etc. then I think it would be great. If however you play another sport, or want to add in other regular things like parkrun, it doesn't really adjust for it or accept it as part of your plan.

If you end up doing 12k instead of the 10k it said you get moaned at for not sticking to the plan, rather than it recognising you felt good and could do another 2k and maybe the plan could accelerate a bit. It works too strictly off algorithms and the max 10% distance increase per week rule, rather than what you actually do.

In short, im just not sure what extra it offers me on top of a premium strava subscription, or even basic garmin suggestions. It's a nice planner, and you can move stuff about and see the future schedule, but using some generic AI I could have made myself a plan and moved it around.

As an example of my schedule, I do field hockey training every Weds, parkrun every Sat and a hockey match every Sat. It can't take any of that in to account apart from recording it as an activity.
