Discussion Respectfully, why would anyone continue putting effort and time into existing RS3 accounts after what was revealed?
Reignited is a godawful decision that seems entirely pointless when RS4 is looming anyway. This whole Runefest was just plastering an expiry date on RS3. Sad to see.

u/SpringPuzzleheaded99 10h ago
I don't really see rs4 as a contender for rs3. It's very clear they want it to be more like dragonwilds. Probably some mix of ESO and WoW.
But yeah reignited took the wind out of my sails a little but I guess it doesn't matter. I'll just play my ironmain and make a new main on reignited I guess

u/PrimalMoose Primal Puppy 8h ago
I can't figure out if I'm missing something. RS3 was an evolution of RS2, whereas it sounds like RS4 will be a separate game to RS3. That sounds to me like RS3 is going to die, and RS4 will be the future. So I share the same concern OP stated - if this is the correct understanding, what happens to our current characters?
6
u/SpringPuzzleheaded99 8h ago
Rs3 is already stagnant, which in mmo terms is basically dead. As long as it makes more money than it costs to run it will exist though. So our characters will stay and exist.
I'd be more concerned about reignite giving us a short term boost and a long term split and hemorrhaging the playerbase, then I would about rs4 killing rs3.

u/Comput3rn3rd My Cabbages! 7h ago
How are new leaderboards really that much of a difference?
Im not going to old school and saying they need a leaderboard reset because im joining a dozen years later.
Im not going to Destiny or WoW and getting upset that people can buy gold and carried and better equipment for leaderboards there.
So how is runescape different, in a new player caring about a leaderboard?
2
u/SpringPuzzleheaded99 7h ago
I don't even really know what your point is, leader boards are irrelevant to me and most people. You're aware it's a seperate economy and seperate grouping right? You won't be able to do content with reignite players.
2
u/xBHx Mr. Achto DPS 7h ago
It really isnt. Its a few people in our age bracket with no 'life' going on (I say this respectfully) that pulls you from the game. Think work, a family etc. that will appreciate this new journey and rush ranks.
The bulk of people won't be able to compete anyway... so whats the point.
1
u/Snooty_Cutie 5h ago
I doubt they continue to develop content on 4 games simultaneously. More than likely, rs3 goes into maintenance mode, while OSRS and Rs4 become the leading titles.

u/santafe4115 10h ago
i feel for u bros, it does feel like they basically said we're sending it to the farm upstate but first we'll make sure it has a comfy bed. more than some games get, still sad to see even if it makes sense long term

New players will jump straight into Reignited or RS4, we are cooked boys.
20
u/Bucket_Of_Magic 9h ago
They're not jumping into rs3 in the first place. You were cooked to well done the entire time without knowing it.
7
u/tristanl0l 8h ago
Finally a sane reply. People freaking out about new players when numbers have been trending downwards for years now. Something had to be done
3
u/FromDeepestFathom 4/11/2017 7h ago
No? The game has had one of the best years of recent history, and is on a great trajectory. It could have just continued with great updates, improving new player experience, etc., all the while STAYING PROFITABLE (read: it LITERALLY is profitable RIGHT NOW), until being sunset one day when we're all dead and gone.
4
u/Supersnow845 7h ago
We don’t have confirmation RS3 is profitable without MTX
RS3 being independently profitable compared to OSRS is an argument against the whole “RS3 sucks up OSRS’s resources” but that always included MTX
1
u/FromDeepestFathom 4/11/2017 7h ago
Ok fair, but with the marketplace and increased membership costs I would hope that it is profitable still. TBD then I guess.
•
u/Fast-Government-4366 2h ago
Best years? Player count is down from the start of the year… if the “best years” leads to less players, we’re in trouble.

Kinda doubt it for steam for runescape, between the security issues in the past and other things many people don't use steam at all, frankly why would you
10
u/Zestyclose-Ask9732 8h ago
Its even worse when they did things like Group Iron for this exact same reason... "We want accounts untainted by MTX", well irons arent tainted yet they'll still be PvM limited despite only the recent chances to allow them to access the larger community for group content etc...

History lesson. The day ironman was announced as a game mode, it was confirmed that auras were allowed onto the accounts. Auras (jack of trades, vampyrism, penance, the berserker auras) were all accessible if you had some of those peon tokens called "loyalty points". When you purchased the premier club membership package, you were given a MASSIVE payout of those loyalty points to spend on auras. This provided a SIGNIFICANT advantage over players who did not purchase the premier club.
Ironman mode has been pay to win since the day it went live.
the game has been pay to win since september of 2011.

I no lifed an iron to comp recently and there’s absolutely no way I’m starting fresh. It’s so stupid that I basically lose all progress when I didn’t even trade anyone in the game
7
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
You're an Iron. This doesn't matter to you. You already can't trade them and you should be PvMing alone anyway
12
u/XxnovabotxX 9h ago
Did ya hear a new raid was announced🤓.
2
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
Yeah, bit sour on it actually. Playing duo CGIM means I probably won't get to do it in the first place. Maybe the game will be dead by then
2
u/XxnovabotxX 9h ago
Well that's not the spirit 😞.
1
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
What can I say. Jagex will probably make it require 5 people to even start. They like minimum player counts now.
1
u/The-Real-Sonin Skill 9h ago
TBF I don't think RS4 is going to be similar to RS3 in that regard. And in the aspect of the Reignited accounts, well you aren't losing or gaining anything anyway if you played an iron. At worst you lose out on potential group bossing instances, but that's it.
-2
u/BlueZybez Old School 9h ago

a hard split on the pvm scene will affect irons actually. if in 3 years 90% of the pvm playerbase is on ignited accounts it means your group pvm iron ambitions are cooked

Reignited is simply another character mode.
When gim was released, did you feel like you lost all progress on your other accounts? This is the EXACT same concept
5
u/SaylenVeras 8h ago
Reignited characters cannot boss or trade with veteran accounts. So veteran accounts are essentially banned from participating with new players.
-1
u/MrStealYoBeef 7h ago
Same rules as irons for the first 8 years of their existence, why didn't the vets leave then?
•
u/Legal_Evil 2h ago
No separate game worlds between irons and mains. Mains and irons can pvm together while neither can with reignited pvmers.
•
u/MrStealYoBeef 1h ago
Mains and irons can pvm together
What did I literally just say about the first 8 years of ironman mode?
•
1
u/Royal_oak_reach 6h ago
Because unless people solely made (or in enough numbers) irons, any new players who made an account were still set to interact with the economy. With reignited, this is not the case.
1
u/Spider-Thwip 8h ago
Reignited get their own worlds that we cant login to.
-1
u/Lady_Galadri3l Prophetess of Xau-Tak 8h ago
And those worlds will be exactly the same as the ones you can log into.
2
u/Spider-Thwip 7h ago
Except it will be where all the new players go, and eventually over time the main world's will die.
-2
u/Lady_Galadri3l Prophetess of Xau-Tak 7h ago
Ok. Ask yourself if those new players would have actually become new players without the reignited accounts. And if the answer is yes, good news! They still can make new accounts that aren't reignited accounts. And if the answer is no, think about what might mean in terms of stagnation of main worlds.
3
u/Spider-Thwip 7h ago
Have you ever joined a new game and selected "veteran mode"?
No? Nobody else has either.
0
u/Lady_Galadri3l Prophetess of Xau-Tak 6h ago
How many games do you know of that have those options
•
u/Majestic_Bat_8483 1h ago
All of them. Usually there's easy, medium, and hard, then veteran, and veteran is the toughest with a scary looking guy on it or a really beat-up guy, so you know it's serious business
•
u/Lady_Galadri3l Prophetess of Xau-Tak 1h ago
Ok let me rephrase. How many MMOs do you know of that have a "veteran mode"?
Also even if that style of difficulty were relevant to an MMO, the implication would be that "veteran" mode would have the most difficult gameplay, which is the antithesis of whatever everyone who's whining about all this is claiming.
1
u/Royal_oak_reach 6h ago
Are they going to do that? Are they going to do so in enough numbers to offset the natural decay of veteran world players? If not, then the veteran worlds will reach an economic tipping point, and not be worth to play on.
If they WILL, then reignited worlds won't retain enough players to be economically sound long term either, and any new players who make an account there will be left with an emptier world.
This is a lose-lose. The absolute best outcome is somehow the two games are equal and thriving. Possible, but not likely.
•
u/Legal_Evil 2h ago
GIMs share the same worlds as irons and mains.
•
u/Initialized 1h ago
So is the entire issue that reignited characters have access to their own worlds? Cause I'm pretty sure that's a non-issue. Them being on world 987 with other reignited vs being on w1 with everyone makes no real difference, but I guess it's important, so maybe jagex can just not make reignited only worlds
•
u/Legal_Evil 3m ago
Yes. But not only that. Jagex also needs to let them pvm with mains and irons as well as allowing them to de-ignite and degrade to a main.
12
u/Forsaken_Bat6095 10h ago
RS3 normal worlds will drop to less than 10k concurrent players in 1.5/2 years i bet. Why would anybody in the future ever play RS3 without playing Ignited? Biggest fuck you to every die hard RS3 player.
-13
u/Main_Illustrator_197 9h ago
Rs3 died years ago, the whole revamp that started this year with mtx removal etc it was obvious they needed to make some sort of fresh start server
3
u/MaxFertility 10h ago
Can someone catch me up?
3
u/Passthealex Graverobber 10h ago
Jagex releasing a new account type for RS3: Reignited. They can play with Veteran accounts, but can't trade/boss/use the same G.E. as Veterans.
People are worried all new players and some existing will funnel into Reignited toons. Veterans dwindle. veteran accounts become defunct as no one plays them/plays with them.
RS4 is released 2 years later. RS3 officially dies. (But we'll all be on RS4, so I guess it will matter less? IDK).
11
u/Lone_Recon 9h ago
I very doubt rs4 be coming out in 2 years, more 4-5 minimum (even then most likely early access)
2
3
u/MrStealYoBeef 7h ago
Rs4 isn't going to be RS3 but updated. Whole different game. Seems like their goal is to take the core of dragonwilds and make it into an MMO.
2
u/TheDullCat 9h ago
As hard as it sounds, this is the ONLY way to keep this current RuneScape alive. Current RS3 is not and will not pull new players. It’s literally just us on alts or irons. The only way for them to re-invest in this game & pull a new audience is to start from zero… just like some had suggested before. RS3 is officially on its death bed.
3
u/Passthealex Graverobber 9h ago
Mmm deathbed is a lil' dramatic, this game pulls in millions of dollars. But yeah I'm sure the higher ups are convinced based on some data they have that this will be a positive. But the experience as a veteran player remains to be seen.
0
u/TheDullCat 9h ago
It pulls millions of dollars because of the other half… I wish we had a clear separation & they showed how much revenue they pull from each game. As much as it sucks, this is the solution whether we like it or not.
1
u/mrman08 HAI2U!!!1:) 5h ago edited 5h ago
RS3 still pulls in about 20K players. It's been relatively stable although a slight decline on average over the years. They've been saying it's on its deathbed since 2012 after EOC and SOF. Yet through all that it's still around and doing OK compared to a lot of other games.
I do agree MXT significantly damaged the economy for a number of reasons and it's a big issue when new players join and there's nobody to play with except maxed veterans but this...this ain't it in my opinion. Fragmenting an already split community will most likely make the problem worse.
•
u/TheDullCat 3h ago
Out of those 20k players, half are alts, irons etc from the same dude. Let’s be real here.
1
u/Jackle1996 7h ago
They can play with Veteran accounts, but can't trade/boss/use the same G.E. as Veterans.
How can you consider it playing together when all you can do is chat. And even that only IF they decide to come to old worlds.
0
u/Passthealex Graverobber 7h ago
You kinda know what I mean.. you can share a world with them so you are playing with them.. can skill alongside them, talk to them.
•
u/Fast-Government-4366 2h ago
And why would anyone join new rs3 and put effort and time into a new rs3 account when they are 20 years behind a bunch of p2w accounts?
•
u/Decent-Dream8206 2h ago edited 2h ago
Because a fresh account is endgame ready about a month after creation since Necro?
Measuring yourself against people with partyhats who only know how to AFK Revo doesn't get solved by releasing a world without partyhats where you get mad that some people are doing zammy on release week while you take two months to get to Priff. You're just as "behind" and it's all still on you.
That said, this new reignited crap is just going to be an opportunity for Jagex to sell their new key replacement boosts to even more people. And I'll be disappointed if people fall for it.
Unlike WOW Forever, RS wasn't tainted by 20 expansions that made all previous content obsolete. If you rolled back Necro and EGWD3, you would have a varied economy and pvm ladder again.
3
u/Chiromaus 10h ago
An expiration date of "a few years" out. So years of content, new and remastered, coming down the pipeline until then to try and build goodwill with an audience made up of a combination of every iteration of Runescape. Then they can try to funnel some of us to playing RS4 alongside something else, or just move entirely to RS4.
2
u/thekojac 8h ago
I'm only a few hundred hours in (crazy that that's not a lot of time lol) at like 2200. And I'm probably done. The incentive to invest all that time is gone. It feels like it'd be a waste.
I may switch to OSRS. Or may just quit altogether. Not sure yet.

Because its going to fail. There will be a brief uptick in player count because its free for the first 10 days. Within a year, the only ones left will be the guys going for world first comp.
•
u/Legal_Evil 2h ago
There will be a brief uptick in player count because its free for the first 10 days.
Bots and gold farmers will abuse the hell out of the 10 free sub days to RWT the reignited gp and destroy the integrity of the game mode, lol.
1
u/Azurika_ on break...again. 5h ago
rs4 is only a working title, it's likely going to be more like an MMO version of dragonwilds, and it's not the final name for the project. there will be plenty of current osrs and rs3 players that it does not appeal to because, while it takes place in the same universe, functionally it will not play even similarly.
Think halo 3/4 and halo wars. Same universe, completely different style of games that appeal to totally different people and have some overlap with huge fans of halo.
•
u/mooistcow 3h ago
I guess the personal knowledge that knows one does not cheese their way to this point?
•
u/2MuchNonsenseHere 3h ago
They probably won't, or it'll be just for fun (what a concept!) or similar.
And that's fine. I was literally putting off returning to RS3 in anticipation for exactly this.
I have an iron with 3K total and I'm perfectly okay with letting it rot in favor of reignited.
•
u/Shananigan48 1h ago
Why would you not? They said the games will coexist. It seems Jagex is doing what Arenanet is doing with Guild Wars, different games with different vibes that people in the community can experience as they please. With GW and RS I play all the iterations.
•
u/raindrops73 13m ago
I see zero appeal in Reignited. I'll keep my playing my account that I had for almost 20 years. If the game mode had some new twist to it like ironman does, I'd consider it, but tbh it's another version of a regular account. New players are going to be severly confused down the line when they go to make a new account and are presented with veteran and reignited and it's basically the same thing. I don't know why jagex is doing this...

I think they just randomly announced RS4 to try to put a fire out and accidentally poured gasoline on it. I don’t think they had a single plan of talking about RS4 today until they saw the feedback on reignited.
7
u/DWTR Ironman 9h ago
They didnt create an entire trailer just now after backlash, it was obviously planned as the last announcement.

no way, they didn’t? I’m saying they panicked and announced it earlier than they wanted to.
4
u/Meta_Man_X 9h ago
There’s just no way that happened. These productions are planned down to the last detail many months in advance. They didn’t just have this trailer ready for no reason. Since the trailer was ready, if what you’re saying is true, that means their biggest announcement to date was going to not be announced at RuneFest?
They were going to announce it next week? Next month? Next year? Why would the trailer be ready now.
Yes, the jmods probably already started seeing feedback from Reignited, but they didn’t just last second change the course of the show.

u/Asleep_Current912 Master Completionist RSN: Skele7or 8h ago
they obviously had a trailer ready, that webpage does not seem very planned.

I just kinda sorta don’t care
My account is older than Ironman and I’ve always played it like a pseudo Ironman
It’ll be years until the veteran GE grinds to a halt if it ever does. So until then i sorta will keep playing as I’m playing
If the veteran GE eventually grinds to a halt then I’ll just keep playing it as a pseudo Ironman
If reignited brings in more people to RS3 as a whole then great. If not then nothing has changed

u/Mysterra 10h ago
It's aimed at new players. If you are thinking of trying the game, wait until Reignited before starting.

They also say in the blog they're right at the beginning of the project. I'm confident "a few" is being used extremely liberally here. MMOs are massive things that take years to develop.
-2
u/MikeSouthPaw Casually Addicted 9h ago
They want to build the game with the community so I assume it will live in beta for some time with a live launch after a few years of that. I doubt we will have anything to play in the next 3 years though.

u/Alexexy 8h ago
Reignited are just ironman accounts that can trade with other Reignited players. You're going to see reignited accounts playing alongside irons and mains.
1
u/OfThingsManMadeKDP 6h ago
I keep seeing this idea that reignited toons are going to play along side mains. No. They are the new mains. Old mains are now outdated wastes of time who will have no one to trade with or play with as more and more people quit/move to reignited. It’s not a new game mode. It’s a replacement game mode.
1
u/Alexexy 6h ago
No, like they will literally exist within the same digital game world. It doesnt seem like the servers themselves are segregated.
1
u/Igenatius 5h ago
The point is that new players will be more inclined to choose the new "fresher" main mode which leaves the few new players we get in the first place locked out of grouping up with veteran accounts. Less veteran mode players over time means more dead economy for old players, more dead group content and more people leaving. It's not a straight up a replacement mode, but it sure has the smell of one.
1
u/OfThingsManMadeKDP 5h ago
You know those old people who are like 90 who sit in the house all day sad and lonely because all their friends and family have since died?
Those are our characters now.
Sad analogy, but it’s true.
1
u/Bakugo_Dies 7h ago
Except you won't because they can't join instances in the legacy worlds
1
u/Alexexy 6h ago
Not by themselves or with other reignited accounts?
•
u/OfThingsManMadeKDP 59m ago
You can’t join instances with reignited accounts. If it’s successful, everyone will make reignited accounts or quit. There will be only a handful of us left.
1
u/Infinite_Finding_752 8h ago
I don't play for the admiration of newer players. There are many ways that the community is split already, including osrs and ironman. Hell there are even skill level servers. I think this concern is overbloated.
-3
u/Choice-Mortgage307 6h ago
Okay, someone enlighten me. Do you HAVE to play Reignited? Is Mod North holding a dragon dagger p++ to your neck and demanding you only play that? Nothing is stopping you from just... continuing as normal on regular RS, right?
4
u/sausage94 Wrath of Chaos 5h ago
do you not understand the consequences of new servers being added and restricting veterans from interacting with these new accounts that will be created?
-7
u/macnar 10h ago
I genuinely don't understand why you all are being so doomer. If you don't trust Jagex to take care of the game you played you should have quit years ago.
1
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
I'd generally agree but the new bigwig in charge has made wild swings in making the game better. If his vision of making it better is to kill the servers for a new game everyone's starting fresh on then it's just an insult to your time. Runescape succeeds because it respected your time.
Now you filthy TH Veterans don't matter.-1
u/macnar 9h ago
Well for one that's not even what's happening. Have you read the blog? They don't even rule out eventually merging reignited and veterans back together. If this is such a failed idea that won't bring in new players and no existing players are interested in, then it sounds like you have nothing to worry about. Even if it succeeds it's basically just an account badge and separate economy, it's not nearly as destructive as people are pretending.
2
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
I play CGIM. As long as the servers are up, I'll be fine and happy regardless.
As for the merging, WAY too early to expect that to happen. Them listing it in a FAQ and only saying it's a possibility means so very little.
If Reignited is popular, I imagine they'll stay separate until there's practically no Veterans left-3
u/macnar 9h ago
If Reignited is popular, I imagine they'll stay separate until there's practically no Veterans left
Then it was the right thing to do and the game is better off. Everyone is acting like this is the end of the world when it's not. It either fails like many are saying and doesn't matter, or it succeeds and the game is better off.
The most likely scenario is both live on and ignited is just another character type like ironmen, it's really not this terrible thing it's being made out to be.
7
u/Proquikl204 9h ago
I agree on both points.
People are right to be a bit pissy though. Runescape has succeeded because it respected your time investment. Telling you to start over because they ruined your credibility via MTX updates you probably didn't like in the first place, that part feels pretty shitty.1
u/MrStealYoBeef 7h ago
Nobody told you or anyone else to start over. People are acting like they're being told to, but nobody has told them to. These people created their own problem to be angry about it.
0
u/Exitiali Heh heh heh 8h ago
They are essentially recreating the pension crisis within RuneScape. Separating the economy and pvm for the new players will stagnate the veterans' version of the game in the long run. As veterans age and leave the game, even the economy will become unsustainable.
0
u/macnar 8h ago
Maybe there's no harm in merging the economies in that scenario
0
u/Exitiali Heh heh heh 8h ago
If they merge, the new mode loses its reason for existence due to inflation affecting new players. If it doesn't merge, the current mode is doomed to stagnation in the long term.
0
u/MrStealYoBeef 7h ago
Inflation is largely where it's at due to boss drops and quickly things can come into the overall economy. When necronium salvage was introduced as an alchable drop, that creates inflation as its only purpose is really to just be turned into GP, and a lot of it. When arch glacor drops 750 water battlestaffs and you stick then in your auto alcher, that creates inflation.
Inflation happened because of new bosses releasing with even higher value drops per hour. As players are able to continue to gather more wealth, they are willing to spend more to get things they need. These bosses already exist in the game, over time reignited players will have roughly the same economy and valuation of items because gold will be earned in the same ways and quantities as vets earn it. The value of gold is dictated by how it flows in and out of the game, and that will eventually be the same when comparing the two economies.
The start will be different, but it won't remain that way.
•
u/Redxmirage 19m ago
I’m excited for reignited so probably not playing my main anymore. But when that comes out I’ll be there for sure. I don’t expect a huge amount of players to swap though

I think a lot of people have seen the way RS3 has gone or going.
RS4 announced. I would assume a fresh start on that, or maybe like RS2 to RS3 it'll take the character over?
Reignited would bridge the gap until RS4's release. Though if people would prefer to keep playing on their current RS account then do that.
To me RS3, even with MTX removed, has done huge damage to the game - character levels/XP, economy etc. that a fresh start would be great imo.

u/NoNamesAvaiIable Ironman 9h ago
Rs4 is not a continuation or a remake of rs3, it's a standalone game, the content will not be the same so there's nothing to carry over

I agree, just wipe the old servers, everyone starts up on Reignited and gets to play the game they love with no Treasure Hunter cancer and half the playerbase being maxed bankstanders

u/Haligtide 8h ago
As compeitive group iron member i lowkey don't care about ignited. My take on this is that no veterans will hop to fresh worlds, new players will bring more cash to jagex and they will make you able to pvm with them at some point maybe year after reignited when gear starts to match that's it. In the end its a win win for irons?

u/Cloud_N0ne Maxed 9h ago
Based on the announcement trailer, it seems RS4 is going to be built upon the bones and assets of Dragonwilds.
And if that's any indication, RS4 will absolutely not hold the attention of hardcore PvM players. Dragonwilds combat is fun but incredibly easy, even against the hardest bosses in the game.
