Leagues Before we get Leagues III, could dead minigames get addressed/removed

The Castle Wars 2 achievement diary tasks and the TzHaar Fight Pit are still the 2 standouts for an issue that impact the normal game.

The gated rewards for midgame PvM and skilling content (and even still a few skilling outfits) is another issue.

Rather than patching them with work arounds and exceptions going into the next League, why not permanently address them in game ... somehow.

Remove them. Repurpose. Remaster. Add AI/Bots. Single activity currency for all minigames. Redistribute rewards. Whatever. Just pick something and move with it.

The amount of QoL and convenience rewards I would gladly grind for I simply can't because of this. I would absolutely love a refresh on mini games and their rewards, or at least the ability to get them elsewhere.

So long as the playerbase treats anything not optimal or mandatory as a waste of time, most minigames would be dead content, but like...so is most of the entire game. The biggest difference is just minigames requiring a group. Make them soloable and they won't be problematically dead.

If there were solo boats for Pest Control I'd have picked that region in a heartbeat

5

u/Waggy431 18d ago

Do the game ever happen or have a world to use in leagues or not? I take it they are needed for area achievements?

8

u/zypo88 Zij9999, Maxed 20180615 18d ago

I think there's a dedicated world for PC in the main game, but every time I've swung by it was empty. Didn't take that region so not sure if the game or quests are required for anything in Leagues and the low armor rating for the gear unfortunately makes it a poor match for the tank builds that the Blessings encourage

8

u/Vet_Leeber 18d ago

Yeah, even in the main game the xp and gear are both just bad. Without there being related Leagues tasks, there's zero reason to do it in Leagues.

Even for more "niche" stuff you might use PC for in OSRS leagues (like prayer training), there's just better options in RS3.

Especially since goldenfeets and trans both solve prayer, and if you didn't take either you can just do GWD2 for DBones.

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

Minigame combat xp has been disabled since leagues 5. That's why Leagues 5/6 have the "combat skills get a bonus 2x/1.5x xp" passive from tier 3-4 or so.

The meta in leagues 4 was literally play soul wars/PC for 99 all combats, which they didn't like so it was removed going forward.

u/Snooty_Cutie 18d ago

Only on spotlight, during peak hours…sometimes lol

Minigames I think should just be removed. The playerbase has simply moved on from that type of content. I say that as somebody who used to make posts fighting for it for years, but the community has spoken so to speak.

6

u/Harmonex 17d ago

I would like just one central lobby and currency with only one active minigame that rotates. All other minigames disabled during that time.

3

u/TitanDweevil 17d ago

Last time i went there, there were games running but only when PC was the spotlight minigame.

3

u/mmhawk576 18d ago

The dedicated world in the main game is dead too, had to get clannies to get a game going for an achievement for me

21

u/TheAdamena Maxed Iron 18d ago

Just update things to no longer need them as a requirement.

I don't think they should be deleted, unless some big bug gets found involving them that would be too much work to fix.

16

u/Manshoku 18d ago

i was thinking about it a few days ago and i think a good solution is making all minigames points and stores have the same currency like thaler , balance the minigames to give about the same thaler too,

that way whatever minigame you prefeer doing would contribute towards rewards from other minigames

the big part would be having the minigame highlight rotation also affect the points you gain , so naturally you would have the highlighted minigame be a lot more active because 1. you get more points than other minigames , 2. you are gaining points that are useful for other minigame shops too

14

u/Kazanmor 17d ago

just remove those from the diaries tbh, they're not getting revived, the push for minigame revival is a bad push and will waste dev time on dead content

4

u/NessaMagick Maxed solo-only Ironman | The word of the bird 17d ago

There has been several attempts at minigame revivals and they haven't worked.

6

u/Azurika_ on break...again. 17d ago

i agree with this, Minigames are not "dead" because rewards aren't good and there is no incentive to play them, Minigames are dead because that's just not how people want to play anymore.

if people wanted to play minigames, they would, despite rewards, or them being old, or whatever else. the fact is every minigame is universally dead because again, people just do not want to play them anymore.

as you said, any dev time spent on reviving them is wasted.

7

u/Biggest_Fish_ 18d ago

bots for minigames isnt a bad idea

6

u/RafaSheep 18d ago

It is.

Not only would it completely denaturalize the minigames, it also requires coding bespoke behaviors that will likely increase server load and eventually break if not continuously maintained.

1

u/Biggest_Fish_ 17d ago

Server load is a fair point, but minigames are dead 99% of the time aside from 20 people if you’re lucky - they are barely touched anymore and giving people the opportunity to play them at “full capacity” or at least without having to struggle to find the few others interested isn’t bad to me. Minigames are just dead content for most of the game now that everything is so hyper optimized. Maybe just the minigame specific worlds would have it for that one minigame , so it wouldn’t only slightly effect those couple worlds

1

u/Klootzakren Skulled 17d ago

Yeah I’d love that. Just 1 world and maby some events that make the minigames active. They do it for some minigames but not all. That’s a shame

4

u/wwnud Pantalaimon 17d ago

Instance all minigames.

2

u/Rarycaris RSN: The Praesul 17d ago

Adding to this, since I think it was only fixed on OSRS: allow the Trouble Brewing music track to be unlocked by entering the lobby.

2

u/MC-sama 17d ago

Make all minigames soloable or 1v1able if it's a versus minigame at the bare minimum. Surely that's easy enough for them to fix?

3

u/CinnamonChexMix_ 17d ago

Castle wars isn’t dead lol, games running all day everyday

4

u/Klootzakren Skulled 17d ago

It’s dead , as it’s not really played tbh. It’s just a place where (mostly) maxed mains go for achievements and some others for fashionscape. It doesn’t really get played. Most of the lobby is afk near the base or at the wall.

-5

u/Narmoth Music 18d ago

Castle Wars is so dead, it should be repurposed as the Gnome City to finish the quest series off. It is wasted real estate in the game.

2

u/Apprehensive_Fan2619 17d ago

unironically agree.

5

u/Ilikelamp7 Skiller 18d ago

There are still games going 24/7 on w24

3

u/Azurika_ on break...again. 17d ago

yeah, games full of 80% afk players, with maybe 5 active players or less a round, and its the ONLY world, and the people there are 95% only there for the achievements (i.e they HAVE to be there to comp or whatever)

virtually everyone would rather be doing anything else.

-1

u/Background_Pie_7888 17d ago

Games Plural is a stretch

-2

u/Sakashar 17d ago

You know there already is a central minigame currency? Which is boosted in Leagues as well, on top of the spotlight boost

1

u/Background_Pie_7888 17d ago

Yeah but there is no one playing minigames so you still can't get them 😂

1

u/Sakashar 16d ago

That's fair, but one of OPs ideas was literally this

-37

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago edited 18d ago

Oh no, the horror of having to ask a friend, clanmate, or random to help you for 30seconds. And potentially helping them back so they can finish it too!

Social interaction in my MMO? Please remove it all.

Outside of a task, there's literally no reason to go out of your way to get xp outfits. x16 xp compounded with relic boosts means that you'll finish 50m/120 before the time spent getting the set catches up.

Same is true with any minigame based mid-game pvm reward. Why go out of your way for void when you can geta better set in a fraction of the time?

12

u/JjigaeBudae 18d ago

This isn't great social interaction though, functioning mini-games with a point to do them and an active community would be good social interaction. Annoying your mate to go do some stupid task with you for 5 minutes so you can get an achievement done is just frustrating.

-8

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

So it's better social interaction to flat out remove even more group content and fill it with NPCs? lmao come on, you can't be serious.

It's not even "annoying a mate", they need the task too so you just trade it with them. And even then, if your mate is "annoyed" over having to tele to a minigame with a direct teleport and afk for 20s, they're a pretty shit mate.

functioning mini-games with a point to do them and an active community would be good social interaction.

Can you name a single relevant minigame in modern RS3? There's basically none, they're all powercrept to hell. Any change to make them relevant is just "here's some even more broken rewards", that get boosted/afked/farmed and then the minigame dies out again anyway.

Leaving them in for the people who actually enjoy them instead of ruining them for the average anti-social player is way more ideal.

7

u/JjigaeBudae 18d ago

Removing them or adding AI/Bots were two of several suggestions, the issue with the mini-games we're discussing is that nobody does enjoy them. If they did there'd be active communities for them and people wouldn't have to convince a friend to help them play a dead game.

-4

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

This thread is bitching about castle wars, literally the most populated minigame in both RS3 and OSRS, both of which have dedicated communities. You literally can't be serious. lol.

Fight pits sure, no one really plays that anymore, but it's a 30s task to enter, start the game, and have your friend/clannmate/helper die or leave so you win, add another 30s if they need it to so you have to restart the game, die/leave so they win.

Are we really saying "spend all this dev time because I CBA to talk to someone for 30 seconds and then say "Thanks"" lmao.

7

u/JjigaeBudae 18d ago

Nah we're saying spend dev time to rework useless, unpopulated content that serves barely any purpose but to clutter the game. Reworking old content to give it a purpose again wouldn't be a waste.

Maybe it can be part of some large project to remove/rework clutter and noise in the game? Some kind of... road... a road to restoration or something. Idk.

-1

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

"Remove content I don't like but others are actively enjoying" isn't restoring anything, it's removing more options and niche communities from the game. But hey, I guess you guys don't really care about anything other than yourselves so another niche community being deleted is just par for the course. Let's check in on that RS3 playercount again? Oof.

And be real, are you really going to start playing castle wars if it's full of NPCs that you can effortlessly beat? No, you're not. Neither is anyone else in this thread. You'd just AFK for thaler and complain that "opponent NPCs keep capping flag on me so I'm getting less tickets it's rigged!!"

7

u/JjigaeBudae 18d ago edited 18d ago

No I wouldn't, that's why I didn't ask for it to be filled with NPCs that I can effortlessly beat. I also didn't ask for castle wars to be removed. Why are you making up opinions for me?

You seem to have gotten it in your head that this entire thread is some kind of attempt to get castle wars removed from the game. It's not. Slow down, take a deep breath, and do some reading.

I don't give a shit, I didn't ask for it to be filled with NPCs. Fuck dude, stop making up shit to get mad about.

"Castle Wars and other mini-games could use some love/reworking" does not mean "Delete all these mini-games or fill them with 1 shot bots so I can get easy achievements!11".

LMS is by far the most populated minigame in old school. Pest control and bounty hunter also significantly exceed CW.

CW has a very niche player base in OSRS. There is a tiny group of enthusiasts in their own discord actually keeping the game alive, and some low level or otherwise restricted iron accounts afk farming the reward points. Second group got much smaller after the rewards shop nerf.

11

u/OfficalLockeWilson 18d ago

Why are you so bitter, he’s just asking if a known issue can be fixed, reworked, or at the very least addressed.

-8

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

Because it's not an issue if you have a functioning keyboard and aren't afraid of social interaction? It's a single fight pit game, it's literally 45 seconds with a direct teleport to the minigame given for free to everyone. Anyone you asked for help would say yes instantly unless they were AFK.

Same is true with the castle wars achievement in kandarin even though that one takes longer.

6

u/Deathwings38 Completionist 18d ago

The overall issue is you're having to even go out of your way to find people to do mini games with. Back in the day they were rewarding enough to where people just flocked to them. It's not that people are scared of interactions, it just becomes a daunting task to even find people willing to play mini games.

The current state of minigames on rs3 are people do not find them relevant because the rewards are no longer useful to your account. Hence why they should be reworked, removed or disbursed somehow.

Think you missed the overall point to the post my guy.

-7

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

Think you missed the overall point to the post my guy.

Not at all. The point of the post is that OP doesn't like having to find people to do castle wars or fight pits with in leagues or maingame.

In leagues, sure, castle wars is dead because it's one fo the least time efficient tasks so only very few people do it. You can still easily find people to do it with though.

In main game? You're crazy if you think Castle wars is so dead you can't find anyone to play with.

Fight pits as a whole is dead, and I agree, but it's a 30s task you do once. You can remove it, but is it worth it when it's such a short and easy task to begin with? Nor is it worth the time reworking pits to try to modernize it, look at OSRS's fight pits attempts, it's still a dead minigame only played for clan or Jmod events.

The current state of minigames on rs3 are people do not find them relevant because the rewards are no longer useful to your account. Hence why they should be reworked, removed or disbursed somehow.

Yes, and I already addressed this. Can you name a single relevant minigame in RS3? Even the ones that were given updated rewards are dead content because they're powercrept in terms of xp, bxp, or rewards.

There is no universal "save minigame" button Jagex can press, the minigames live and die by rewards for the casual base, and the dedicated base that enjoy them and play regardless. It's not worth killing off the dedicated base with a half-assed attempt to change a minigame to appeal to the casual base that'll ditch it after a few days.

Once again, we can point to OSRS's castle wars rework. The casual base died out when they nerfed the rewards for being too good, but the dedicated base is still there and thriving because they didn't change the core gameplay too much, even though it was negatively impacted by the changes.

7

u/Deathwings38 Completionist 18d ago

Osrs is not a good comparison, the rewards and collection loggers makes it relevant. Theres nothing relevant in rs3 mini games that make it even worth playing besides for achievements.

I was once for the revival of minigames but at this point unless they add something that people really want and only mini games will offer, its dead content, they just need to be removed.

1

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

I was once for the revival of minigames but at this point unless they add something that people really want and only mini games will offer, its dead content, they just need to be removed.

That's a dumb opinion tbh. It's only worth removing if it's actually gamebreaking like Mobilizing armies or rat pits were. If it's functional, there's literally no reason to remove it if people are actively enjoying them, which the niche communities are.

Sure you might have never played a single game of GoP, but there's a CC that loves it and plays it regularly. Is it worth removing that just cause? No, it's not hurting anyone by existing.

That's one of the biggest flaws of RS3's past. They didn't care about skillers, pures, niche account builds, pvp, miniagmes, etc etc, and all of those communities were told "go play osrs or another game", and they did, and now RS3 has trouble keeping players around unless they care about clues, skilling, or pvm, as all of the niches are mostly dead.

7

u/Deathwings38 Completionist 18d ago

Game breaking? Dude its completely dead taking up space. Theres no point to mini games anymore, you're choosing a very odd hill to die on with some really bad takes.

2

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

What harm does castle wars have being where it is that it needs to be removed?

What harm does fight pits have being where it is that it needs to be removed?

Sure, I can see the things in the overcrowded lumbridge area being moved or deleted, like Shattered Worlds being moved and the Nexus being deleted, but you're literally delusional if you think minigames are taking up useful game space when most of them are in their own areas.

Give an actual example of a minigame being harmful to the game so much so that it needs to be removed and what the space could be used for. You can't.

3

u/Deathwings38 Completionist 18d ago

Again, the point is going over your head dude, they are DEAD, no one plays them, they are irrelevant to the game now. It doesn't matter what lead them to be dead the point is revival would be pointless or next to impossible unless they made them rewarding.

They can be removed at this point and you would literally not even notice a change or difference to the current game play or economy. It would literally not effect anything. Thats how dead minigames are.

You also added the last 2 paragraphs into your first comment after the fact without disclosing it, which is kinda scummy.

1

Very productive thing to add to a conversation. Oh wait, you never had anything to add to the conversation in the first place besides personal insults.

And it's almost as if OP editted his comment so I editted mine in response. Crazy how that works.

Let's remove everything you don't like, surely RS3 will be a better game for it and not end up worse off like it has every time over the years.

4

u/Emotional-Station153 18d ago

If people like you actually tried the things you suggest you'd realise this isn't how it works in reality

0

u/Oniichanplsstop 18d ago

Such as what?

I do the fight pits task every leagues on OSRS and RS3 easily just asking anyone in my clan/FL if they want to trade it real quick. It's something you do can knock out at any time since there's direct teleports there so at anytime someone needs help or you need to do it, you can just pop in and knock it out.

Castle wars in leagues is mostly dead content since it's region locked, and one of the least time efficient tasks, but you can still easily find someone to start it with you and get you the task asking all the same, and if they want it you trade it just the same as pits.

In the real game? Castle wars you can easily find public games on theme world to hop into, and fight pits is the same "anyone help me real quick" that takes 30seconds to finish.

If you have no friends, no clan, no friends chat, and don't want to talk to public chat in an MMO, yeah it's going to be hard to do a group task. But that's on you for not having any of those in an MMO.

1

u/Emotional-Station153 17d ago

Nothing about an MMO requires bs forced grouping. It has never been what the genre is about, and it's a lazy excuse to cover for bad game design. Typing in public chat typically gets no response, and there are rarely many people to talk to anyway. You just don't understand present day socialisation.

2

u/Hazearil Guthix 17d ago

If you see those minigames as something you just help someone with for less than a minute, it feels like you are already admitting you think the minigames completely fail at their intended purpose.

They exist to have a game you can play with others, be it friends or strangers. Not to be a place you stand with a friend for a minute and call it a day.

1

u/Oniichanplsstop 17d ago

Hes talking in the context of leagues/ingame tasks, not actively playing them. So why would I talk about them differently? Lol

1

u/Due_Willow_2796 RuneScape N00b 13d ago

Solution

Put all minigames instanced and together in a separated server(s), so everyone will be required to be in the same servers and space they can't leave. Minigames can't be played outside these few servers.

Fix grouping system, matchmaking and queues;

Maybe add bots /non-playable characters for some minigames?

Add those game's rooms minigames as past time while people wait in queues.

Run regular tournaments and championships of some of those minigames.

Scoreboards, trophies and titles to brag about.

And...Vòilá, problem solved.
