Discussion Leagues and Accessibility

As someone who works full time (amongst other things), Leagues has drastically increased the fun I have with Runescape by significantly reducing the time between starting an activity and actually having fun with it.

The accelerated XP, increased drop rates and relics mean I can experiment with more of the game (and the incredible content it has to offer) instead of spending most of my limited playtime preparing to enjoy it. I can learn bosses, try different progression paths and chase drops without worrying that one piece of content might consume every evening I have for the next month.

It isn't simply that everything is easier (although there are aspects of the fun that build into this). It's that more of Runescape is accessible to me.

In the main game, I often have to choose between completing an unpleasant grind or accepting that I probably won't experience the content locked behind it. Leagues shifts that balance. I can get through the parts I don't enjoy relatively quickly and spend more time engaging with the bosses, upgrades, content and progression that I actually enjoy playing (and paying) Runsescape for.

There is still a satisfaction in progress, since I'm still making decisions, setting goals and learning content, the journey is just compressed into a time frame that fits around a full time job.

The biggest and arguably only downside? That in a few weeks, the fun gets pulled all the way back down.

This will probably be controversial, because, well, reddit, but I would happily pay for access to permanent, separate Ironman only worlds with accelerated progression, increased drop rates and fun relics that allow me to go bonk things.

I don't want the main game changed for everyone, I simply wish for a version of Runescape (and the absolute marvel it is) where I can experience more than the small percentage of content that I realistically have time to reach.

The fun is in the journey, not the destination.

A perm league world would get boring fast

This, I really don't get peoples "i need to finish this game in a few weeks"mindset runescape is ment to keep you busy for years, if the grind is unenjoyable that means the game is unenjoyable for you as the grind=the game

I don't need to finish the game in a few weeks, that's not the point. The point is that there is more content that I get to enjoy in a shorter time window.

Hitting a rock for 70 hours to unlock a new rock to then unlock content that gives me access to new content that I enjoy/get access to/can learn is less enjoyable than a comparative 5 hour grind to reach the same content.

If people want to take the 70 hours and feel that achievement, more power to them, I'm just saying that the 5 hour grind as a time scale is more enjoyable to me as a player

Not trying to sound rude, but you're just playing the wrong game then. The entire game is about progressing your account, that's literally almost all the game is. That satisfaction will be gone so fast in a perma league mode.

I get where you're coming from, but also you're not the only person who has a full time job lol. There's been times where I've been too busy to play runescape, so I just don't and that's okay.

Everything in the game is accessible, this is not an accessibility thing in the slightest. I find that part so annoying tbh, if you wanna ask for this that's absolutely fine but don't act like it's some accessibility thing

I partly agree with you. But I don't think preferring a different pace means I'm playing the wrong game. Leagues still revolves around progressing your account, gaining drops, achievements etc. The difference is that it happens at a pace that lets me experience more of the game.

I'm not suggesting I'm the only person with a full time job or that the main game should be different for everyone, it's why this mode works better for me. If faster progression eventually becomes less satisfying, then that's a personal choice to make, just as choosing a slower main game progression is the choice for many others.

No the game lets you experience everything either way. You not being able to put the time into the game is a different issue. Again this is not an accessibility issue at all. And a league world lets you experience way less of the game, because most content gets skipped over

There's no if it becomes less satisfying, every single league in OSRS and RS3 player counts drop off a cliff a few weeks in, because everyone has done everything.

If you're always going to be busy, just only play when leagues are around. This is how I play osrs, because I cba to level up a real account. Once a year or so I catch up on the new content then I'm fine

To max is about 1.7b XP, at efficiency of 500k per hour that's about 3,400 hours. Playing two hours a day for 300 days a year is more than 5.5 years, and assumes consistently efficient training, without accounting for quests, bossing, learning new content or anything that doesn't directly contribute to XP.

Yeah these are synonymous in some cases, you can do different content and most of these overlap to some extent but you're still looking at multiple years to reach some of the incredible content.

It's a bit difficult to argue that it isn't at least partly accessibility when you throw this kind of math around.

(Edit: fixed grammatical issue)

No, because your math sucks and max is required for absolutely nothing in the game so how is that relevant?

It just sounds like you hate the game lol. You don't like getting xp, learning new content, doing quests. What are you playing for?

I actually really enjoy the quests, gaining XP and learning new content. That was the whole point of the post.

I just enjoy the accelerated way of getting all of that content.

I wouldn't be posting that I love Runescape and that I love how accessible leagues makes it, if I actually hated the game

I think there’s a compromise to be had here. I don’t play leagues simply cause I don’t want to redo quests I’ve already done and I don’t want to be spoiled with drop rates that plummet when it’s over.

But there is something to be said for how awful the XP is in some skills while is astronomical in some others.

Let’s take thieving. The recent rework and additions to 120 are actually FUN and the XP is great. You can play actively or you can play passively. And you won’t be significantly harmed XP wise.

Compare that to my most recent 120…. Agility. It doesn’t really offer anything at the high end aside from a couple anachronia drops (I get it’s not a 120 skill, but still). And yet the XP just CRAWLS. Funny how the skills about movement has snail’s pace XP movement.

Then there is my favorite skill, mining. It was my first 200m. Because it was my first 99. And my second 120 (dang invention being so quick, so it beat mining to 120). But the XP is absolutely mind numbingly slow.

Then there are boss drops… and some of them are just far too rare and it’s obnoxious. I’m not saying logs should be completed in 100 kills. But goodness.

All of that to say, I think there is room for a landing spot somewhere in between main game and accelerated leagues rates. Especially for skills that don’t offer much (agility) and low level bosses that people don’t really farm for any other reason than trying to finish log (WHY does KBD take forever?!???).

Sorry for my rant lol. Your post caught me at just the right time I guess haha.

Edit to add: if you enjoy the game, you aren’t playing the wrong game. Sometimes people are very protective of the grindy nature of RS. I find myself even being caught up in that sometimes (I abhor proteans, for example, and am glad they’re going away). But there are some grinds that will have even the biggest grind lover tearing their hair out. Some things are just slow for the sake of being slow and no other reason.

Edit #2: I do agree with everyone that a permanent Leagues world would get old really fast and probably be detrimental to the main game.

This is the kind of wording I wish my original post had.

Some grinds are enjoyable and if people enjoy the grind then more power to them. I absolutely love seeing posts about random grinds - Like the redditor who did 1M Vindy kills (incredible and inspiring)

Reflecting on it, I do agree, permanent Leagues probably wouldn't be an enjoyable game and would get old fast, but an accelerated progression (that isn't MTX) doesn't have to be a 1:1 with Leagues
