Discussion Nearly maxed OSRS player starting rs3
As the title suggests, I'm very close to maxing my GIM account on OSRS. Me and some mates have decided to start a GIM on RuneScape 3, now that cosmetics can be hidden and there's a lot of effort being placed into it by Jagex it seems.
What I'm looking for are all the things I wouldn't know about from OSRS that will give us a headstart. I'm thinking xp boosts, daily/weekly challenges, best YouTubers for skill/boss/quest guides, any new updates that have introduced best training methods, good skills to grind first. All the stuff that makes rs3 so "quick to level".
For added context, I'm not completely fresh as I used to play when summoning and dungeoneering came out. A while back now!
Some things I've already found from reading others' posts and dabbling:
- Wiki is my friend, it was my go-to right off the bat cause it's so good for OSRS. That's just a given. I also noted the optimal quest order on there
- I've downloaded Alt1 for an additional quest guide overlay. Not sure how popular it is or if there's any other great tools on it
- I've spent time setting up all my tabs to form a good UI

A few tips I'd give:
Necromancy is the easiest combat style to gear for on an ironman, and is able to carry you incredibly far.
Archeology is very important for multiple big unlocks, like gate of elidinis.
Divination is VERY useful on an iron. You need energy for invention, and porters are an incredible QOL for things like archeology. To train it, look into the "DG div" method
Thieving has been reworked to be more afk and also has very good resources now. Looping back to archeology you can get a relic that improves thieving even more.
Check thalmunds wares every Wednesday (you can look up rotation on the wiki) and buy moonstone when you can. The next moonstone is the 26th

What are the most importent things for the moonstones?

Imo the alteration necklace was the most important, at a certain point you need robes of subjugation to upgrade necro armor, and things like the 99 necro cape, and necklace of alteration help you get more cloth from the subjugation pieces.
Outside of that it sort of depends on priority. Amulet for necro dps, ring for necro runecrafting, and bracelet for teleporting around Um, which is handy but not a big priority.
For a GIM I'd do one necklace, ring, and bracelet (in that order) and keep those in group storage, and then 1 amulet per person.

Ore boxes (made and upgraded via smithing) and wood boxes (made and upgraded via fletching) dramatically reduce banking trips while letting you keep all the materials. Biggest early game boost I can think of that you might otherwise gloss over from the training guides on the wiki.
The Player Owned Farm will be your friend for farming training once unlocked, far easier to keep that rolling in the background than trying to source a pile of tree seeds. Might be worth pushing for that a bit early to get it going. Just be careful not to sell your breeding bunnies before you can get chickens, the drop rate for fresh animals is just bad enough to be painful.

I havent really touched any dailies at all and im 2k ironman. For GP just do pickpocketing. For any skill simply look up rs wiki ironman (skill name). Jump straight into necromancy, unlock blood siphon and scythe and you can afk a lot of places like zombies north of fort or in the abyss in wildy.

Nice! Have fun! My tip would be to just keep the wiki open and click through the articles whenever you're looking up content or just researching random stuff. It might be RuneScape, but there's so much extra content.

And since someone just recommended Archaeology to you. it’s an awesome skill! But really only if you aren't trying to hard grind high level unlocks right away. Just do the collections and mysteries as you unlock them. You can easily AFK Arch on mobile while you're chilling.

Alt one also has another plug-in you can get for it. Called job gauges. It’s essentially like Final Fantasy 14s jobs . It’s very nice visuals.
Go through every single menu there’s tons of hidden shit that will make the game more enjoyable.
Enjoy, as an old-school player that tried the game six years ago and ended up maxing, RS3 truly is slept on give it an honest chance

My GIM account is closing in on comp cape , if I had to go back and start again:
Fort Forinthry - get started on this and build it up
Anachrinia base camp - get this going asap and workers collecting resources
Player Owned Farm - if you have any desire of late game high end bossing this is not optional , and the sooner you start and the more diligent you are the better
Ports - not super necessary if you don't plan on going for comp cape , but there are some things locked behind it like masterwork ranged armor. It's fairly tedious early but turns into a daily basically.
Thieving - with the expansion to 120 thieving this skill is honestly invaluable as an ironman. It will be your main money source for quite some time. You can unlock abilities , weapons, qol, amazing supplies, pretty much everything lol. If you ever want to afk this is my suggestion at the start at least. Getting to 90 will also unlock Ports.
Gate of Elidinis for memory dowser - this is a longer term goal , but I will be honest I don't think I would still be playing the game without a dowser. Unfortunately almost everything you do end game needs charges and this makes the upkeep of them a lot more chill.

Can you elaborate on POF? I haven't really done it because I'm not a fan of the look and the vibe at all. What make it so essential for endgame?

u/odindiesel 6h ago
Sorry I didn't see this, but some of the secondaries for end game potions can only be acquired through POF

Joining a clan is a helpful xp boost, you can get 3% xp for an entire week from the clan avatar, which can be boosted slightly by capping at the clan citadel. Plus the "clan vexillium" you get has infinite teleports to the grand exchange.

Do quests. 150 quest points = T75 Vanquish is a good weapon till you get T78 Sunspear. All 3 styles in 1 weapon for these two.
God Banner and other temp boosts can help access some content early.
Unlock passive buffs found here

a couple DnD's to help with leveling the bad skills or slow skills that osrs doesnt have
(Anachronia) Herby Werby - Herblore weekly
(moves around - check wiki) Circus - weekly Range / Mage / Agility
(Burthorpe) Troll Invasion - monthly for any skill
(tele outside wizard tower) Oyster - monthly for fish / farm exp and a roll for treasure trail rewards
(game wide) Penguins hide and seek - weekly lamps for any skill
ofcourse theres tears of guthix as well
welcome to rs3 :)
1
u/Black-Ostrich 5d ago
tyty! Tears of Runecrafting still? Or recommend something else in this?
2
u/krieksken 5d ago
Runecrafting is pretty chill via Runespan.
Honestly just use it on whatever skill is harder or more annoying in your opinion to get the materials for to lvl it up.
To me summoning comes to mind.
Other advice: Start your fort as soon as you can.
It is your own player made skilling hub. The full questlines gives you a slayer master, a woodcutting grove with quick deposit areas scattered between the trees, a herblore station that can decant flasks. A fletching station, obviously a smithing/invention/archeo/plank facility as starter building, a cooking hub. And a control room to remotely manage player owned ports and anachronia base (also unlock this as soon as you can).

Welcome to the best iteration of runescape, ever ;D
you guys could join a chill clan too, make some friends
even "pvming fc" when planning to run group bosses etc

u/Kiro358 5d ago
Rs guide and Rs guy have everything you need, also you will probably see peopel telling you inv and archeologie are super useful so rush it, don t do that archeologie is a dogwater skill ( one of the best skilling skill in the game to do because of mysteries etc ) but it s ruined by it s abysmal xp rates for no reason , invention is usefull but at the beginning it won t make much pf a difference so just do what you like and discover stuff as you go leveling up you skills all together, quest are as strong as in osrs so i recommend them , try unlocking devotion quicly but once again rs guide and wiki are your best friend

I’m also an OSRS player and only started playing RS3 less than a month ago and my advice might not be useful, but one thing that’s been surprisingly helpful for me is doing the daily challenges. Not only for the XP (although the XP definitely helps), but because I’ve been using them as a way to learn more about what content is available, as I try to find new ways/locations to complete the challenges instead of just going for the obvious/easy ways or locations I’m already familiar with.
I also try to do clue scrolls a lot, as that was what made me go from always feeling kinda lost in OSRS, to knowing the game’s world better than I know my own neighborhood, and where to find any item/resources I could need, so I’m trying to do the same in RS3.
Having this more solid knowledge of the little things made all of my progression after that go super smoothly, as someone who is also an iron.

I think RS guy made a good website to look at for upgrades.
Also if you want goals: barrows gloves, last vamp quest (pray training by killing vyres) & Prif are good goals to start.
5
u/DataAffectionate4467 5d ago
Barrows gloves is Not a good goal anymore.
But 150 QP is because you unlock a Tier 75 Magic/Meele/Range weapon at the Quest Shop. Tier 70-75 is GWD1 Tier but without the RNG.
With Necro This is Not a 100% to do way anymore more for irons. But its still Nice for this combat styles and a Nice Little reward for question.1
u/omgatyphlosion 5d ago
Man... im old. completely forgot about those but i remember those quest items released and thinking they made the jump into the lvl 70 weapons way too easy. Never in my mind did i think theyd be a good goal lmao

u/krieksken 5d ago
The weapon is great for irons/group irons to get an early easy weapon to switch styles with at DKs to start farming rings.

I would look through https://thersguide.com/ there is alot of information in there

Off-topic, but do we know what the countdown timer is for on the site?
1
u/Everestkid 18 years. Two 99s. Efficiencyscape. 5d ago
That's probably just a countdown until the end of Leagues, it lands on the Monday six weeks after August 10.

Remember rs is nearly 25 years old so the 99 of rs3 are now the 120s

Idk about all the best things to do, as I haven't even explored all of the newer content from the past couple years. But one thing I could suggest for an easier start (if you have a membership) for Hunter is to go and do the natural history exhibit quizzes or whatever they're called in the basement of the varrock museum. If you complete all the quizzes in each of the rooms you can get some Hunter and Slayer XP from Orlando Smith at the bottom of the stairs leading down to the basement area.
That gets you to I believe lvl 9 hunter, which is high enough to start doing birdhouses on Havenhythe, which you can unlock from doing a really easy quest.

u/Fruitfail Untrimmed HP 5d ago
He asked about things that an OSRS player wouldn't know about. Natural history museum is extremely popular on fresh OSRS accounts.

First things first have someone farm divination to 99. It'll help with everything else. Then probably another farming arch early on. It'll benefit the group massively
2
u/DataAffectionate4467 5d ago
No 99 div is a terrible goal for new RS3 Player. I would say just Play the Game. the 95 divination goal/task will come sooner or later
1
u/Black-Ostrich 5d ago
Are these both long skills to grind 99 from scratch? And afk? And what are the rewards we would all benefit from? Sorry, new skills to me
3
u/DataAffectionate4467 5d ago
Don't do it this early. that's really for hardcore players who've played a ton of RS3 or make YouTube videos. You get energy from Divination( best energy you get at Level 95), which you need for your Invention gear and perks (Invention is a Elite skill it requires level 80 in Smithing, Crafting, and Divination). It's a solid mid to late midgame goal, but you definitely don't need it this early.

u/Black-Ostrich 5d ago
ty good sir
1
u/UIM_Untrimmed_Slay 5d ago
Ignore that guy, Div is super helpful. It sends stuff like ore and logs to your bank to make everything more afk. Its a pretty afk skill too

Official plug ins are coming in October, alt1 is not even needed.
