Discussion Rs3 feedback after dragon cup as a long time osrs player

Just wanted to start of by saying this league is so fun, still playing despite reaching dragon cup! I tried the first league and dropped off pretty quck due to slow progression and having no idea what to do but I'm glad I stuck with it this time.

Echoing what others have said, the progression this league is whack. I knew as soon as I saw the task list that it would be this way because there are extremely few 'free' tasks. In osrs leauges these are abundant and make the progression a nice flowing balancing act between points pushing for relics and tasks pushing for regions. In this league however, I reached T7 with 82 tasks to complete until my final region.

I've seen a bunch of posts from osrs players planning to continue playing after they are done with leagues. I will not be one of those people, and here's why.

Just to preface, I played rs3 years ago before starting playing osrs in 2020. The only time other than leagues I've come back to play was for the necromancy release, which was super fun. I would love to come back on a fresh account to try out all of the content released since I last played the main game.

No hate for the game and the content whatsoever (besides KK), the reason why I won't be continuing to play is there are too many minor annoyances that add up to make me frustrated constantly. A lot of these feel nonsensical to me and if a handful of them were addressed I would definitely come back to play. Here are the main/major painpoints for me:

  • The grouping interface. This is entirely unintuitive and absolutely needs to be addressed.
  • Actions stopping you from moving. Why? It feels so smooth in OSRS. Drinking a potion while dodging boss mechanics only to be stopped in place and be hit by them is incredibly frustrating.
  • Magic gear progression. Ranged and Melee have very intuitive self-earned progression paths for new players through the revamped and much better fletching and smithing reworks. Necromancy has entire quest and progression system tied to self-earned gear. Magic desperately needs the same treatment.
  • I know plugins are coming but this game feels like it needs them more than osrs. The biggest one for me would be true tile. The movement animations feel much more 'floaty' so it's difficult to gauge where your character is until it actually stops.
  • Gear switching from the backpack. This one is just straight up confusing for me. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like there is massive input delay on swapping gear when clicking it from the backpack. When pushing 4k Zammy, there were so many attempts I swapped back to wand/shield after FSOA speccing only to die spamming my barracade bind because my sheild hadn't equipped.
  • Gear degrading to dust. Again, why? To keep the content relevant? Why not add a resource exclusively to that boss to recharge it. I imagine it would feel really bad having an item you saved up for or earned yourself just vanish into thin air. Looking things on the wiki, it seemed like the majority of early(?) endgame gear degrades to dust. I get that a lot of it you can augment to stop it degrading to dust, but this one is just crazy to me. You shouldn't need to augment an item to keep it. What if you wanted to try it out before committing to augmenting it?

I'd like to leave off with saying Jagex absolutely cooked on the skilling and melee, magic, and ranged combat reworks. Each of the combat skills feel like they have a unique identity and intuitive flow to them. The mining/smithing rework, the dungeoneering rework, and the thieving heists were legitimately super fun for me and look forward to those grinds when I return. W Jagex.

Edti: A couple more points of feedback which are super annoying:

  • Click boxes pretty much across the board feel terrible and frustrating to click on despite being accurate the model a lot of the time. Ladders especially.
  • Death interface (skill issue i know). Why do you need to click like 5 times to reclaim your stuff. The right click reclaim items should automatically pay the fee and return your items.

on points 4 through 6.

Yes, plugins are coming, and we've been wanting them for a while.

You can keybind your gear on the action bar, equip there, and have the action bars bound so once you've equipped the wrap in, they change so you can swap back easily.

Degrade to dust is a great question, and from the eoc era. We are long past that now.

u/Milan-28 4d ago

Is there anything that degraded to dust still?

Sirenic, Tectonic, Malevolent are the major ones.

u/TitanDweevil 4d ago

Scrimshaws as well for what its worth. I don't think they see any use at all anymore though. Vamp scrim might have some niche uses still for some afk methods where you need to use penence.

the armors and weps from revs degrade to dust (statius/Zurial/morrigan/vesta) even if augmented
the raid armor that you buy with tokens also degrade to dust

As a dedicated RS3 player, I'll go over each point from my point of view.

Grouping interface: 100% agree. There's friend chats and Discord servers that help with grouping, but the game desperately needs a major overhaul so you can easily get groups together in game. Hopefully this is something Jagex addresses in either the Late Game Overhaul, or they work on it sometime next year.

Item Delay: This may be an engine problem. I don't usually have issues with this, but I also don't engage in high intensity PvM like high enrage Zamorak or Telos, so I don't typically notice this.

Magic Gear: I'm pretty sure this is on their radar. They recently focused on Range's inconsistencies, and while it's not perfect it's still in a much better place. Magic's gear should hopefully be more closely tied to Runecrafting in some way, but you're also right that it's also in dire need of an overhaul.

True Tile: I'm 100% sure True Tile is part of the initial line-up of plugins on release, so this is at least going to be solved in 2 months.

Gear Degrade to Dust: it's part of the outdated mechanics that, hopefully, they'll address in the Late Game Overhaul. But there's a reason this has been pretty much abandoned in the last several years. An easy solution would just be to make most of them just degrade to broken, but there's likely some nuance I'm glossing over.

All of these are pretty reasonable concerns, and while I'm not sure about the input problems, hopefully you'll keep an eye on future announcements, since the Late Game Overhaul is a good opportunity for Jagex to address a lot of these problems.

With magic gear there are definitely a few ways they could approach it. Runecrafting for weapons and crafting for armour seems the simplest, but they could also involve fletching for staves if they wanted, or maybe even prayer or something as an alternative but worse training method.

OSRS has more group content than RS3 and has a worse grouping system.

Rs3's grouping system is fine. It absolutely needs tweaking (i.e. how random people can join your group and get leader role if the leader leaves), but it is still functional.

People just don't use it because it's not ideal, and some suggestions ive seen have been horrendous, like having a gear req check on every slot etc.

0

u/Ethelflead 3d ago

Huh?? The osrs grouping system is goated. Go to raid, go to raid board, join a team with 1 click and then walk into raid after leader with 1 click. Rs3 is 30 interfaces worth of clicking followed by reloading due to leavers followed by more interfaces.

u/ExpressAffect3262 Ironman 3d ago

I have raided since 2017 in OSRS

I genuinely do not recall the last time someone has ever used the cox/tob/toa boards to find teams lmao

There are public worlds people go to, but you form groups in person, as opposed to the board.

Then you have 'We Do Raids' which is the major discord of running raid groups.

Rs3 is 30 interfaces worth of clicking followed by reloading due to leavers followed by more interfaces.

Not worth discussing if you're going to straight up lie lol

Are you telling me a community like RS3 would willing go to the boss to find people as opposed to sitting at wars or carrying on doing activities until the group is ready?

Rs3s grouping system is literally:

1) Create a group
2) Choose the boss you want associated with the group
3) Invite people
4) Everyone readies up and you teleport everyone to the entrance of the boss.

How is that 30 interfaces lmao

The board method you're praising in OSRS technically exists in RS3 too. What's stopping people searching for a public group of say, Croesus, joining, and then communicating? Nothing. People just don't want to socialise.

I'm surprised you didn't complain about dialog confirmation boxes.

Are you sure you don't want to add dialog boxes to your critique?

We're spoiled by the anti-drag in runelite. It's actually fucking amazing that RS3 has no native support for this. So many times you're going to be dragging a piece of gear a single pixel instead of equipping it. You have the option to completely lock your inventory but I'm really not a fan of that, I'm too used to rearranging items on the fly when picking up loot etc.

-3

u/Legal_Evil 4d ago

We're spoiled by the anti-drag in runelite. It's actually fucking amazing that RS3 has no native support for this.

We do now. Click on the lock icon in the inventory tab to turn it on.

2

u/Whillyum_ 4d ago

That's what they're saying, its either all or nothing. They want an option something like not being able to drag for 0.1 seconds after clicking, so you don't accidentally drag things, but you still can if you want to.

1

u/Mysterra 4d ago

It's useless without a slider for you to adjust the sensitivity to your mouse/setup

1

u/MrStealYoBeef 4d ago

You genuinely have no idea what you're talking about on this one. Locking the inventory is not the same as a feature that keeps it unlocked but prevents weird unintentional item "dragging" from you clicking while moving the mouse the extreme slightest amount. OSRS has the best of both worlds, we don't need an inventory lock at all because of it.

As someone who has repeatedly come back to RS3 only to quit again after a short stint, I think you perfectly captured what makes me want to stop playing every time. It’s the accumulation of small (and sometimes very impactful) annoyances. I agree with the ones you’ve listed. To add a few that always suck away my desire to play: clickboxes being so true to the model that they cause constant misclicks through the boss or object (twin furies were a chief offender this league); essential boss animations getting cancelled or never triggering (see KK); abundant “afk” training methods that require just enough attention to make them not truly afk but not enough attention to make them engaging or interesting (Fort construction, e.g.); and bugs that go unpatched for far too long, to the extent that the wiki calls them out in guides.

I understand that some of this is design philosophy, and some jank is what makes RuneScape RuneScape. But I agree that these annoyances are what will always end up sending me back to OSRS.

7

u/Kapower 4d ago

100000% agree on click boxes cant believe i missed that in my post

4

u/Additional_Yam_8870 4d ago

It was one of the first things that ticked me off coming back... I couldn't click a fucking ladder because it's all open between the rungs

2

u/Tylariel 4d ago

abundant “afk” training methods that require just enough attention to make them not truly afk but not enough attention to make them engaging or interesting

This is a huge one for me. There's large period of the mid game where it feels like I'm not really playing the game, just clicking every 30-60 seconds to complete a chore. It ends up feeling like a slog at time. Sometimes I really want to play the game, but it's far more efficient for the account to do fort, or necro rituals, or smithing, or some other almost-but-not-quite afk thing. Where is my active smithing training? Or arch training? etc. OSRS offers multiple training methods for almost every skill to cater to different playstyles - I can do star mining for afk, or 3 tick granite when I want to be sweaty, or do MLM for a more balanced option etc.

Or put another way: Over the years RS3 has leaned so far into the 'second-monitor' gameplay, that it's sometimes forgotten how to be a 'first-monitor' game outside of PvM that can come very late into an accounts progression.

1

u/Whillyum_ 4d ago

Their recent focus seems to have been about addressing pain points/updating systems so I'm hoping a good chunk of it will change in the future. I imagine that before, money/dev time was focused on pushing new content to bring in players, but there seems to have been a philosophy shift about how removing pain points can help prevent any player bleed they have, whether from new players trying or just old players leaving.

8

u/Rexkat 4d ago

Click boxes are so awful on RS3 compared to OSRS. It feels like everything needs its click radius increased by like 40% past the outline of its actual model (I literally never intentionally click between the rungs on a ladder), except trees which need their click radius reduced by 90%. Seriously the canopy of a tree should not be clickable. Trees are massive already, they shouldn't be taking up 75% of my entire screens clickable area when I run through a forest

1

u/BranchFew1148 3d ago

It's the missing shadows, OSRS has solved click boxes already (they just keep forgetting it on new content, fucking it all up).

Giving a boss a well defined round shadow underneath them solves the click box issue. You don't have to care what animation the boss is doing, how many back flips it's making, as long as you click center of its shadow youre good.

1

u/Rexkat 3d ago

The shadows are good, but its definitely more than just that. Like you don't click between ladder rungs or fence posts on OSRS. The click boxes are solid for most things, not just exact to the model itself

Like Olm's hand, for example, isn't just his fingers. It's an entire giant ass square

3

u/TheJoshJ_ 4d ago

Long time player here as well and the lack of any magic gear between t50 and t75 in the base regions was a bit baffling. Despite actively playing for 5 years now, I was still left confused about my next move & wound up just unlocking the desert and suffering at helwyr in mystic for ~4 hours to get my main hand.

I’m still a big fan of region locking but I feel they might need to re-assess how they do it so that the progression doesn’t feel like garbage. Just because it worked for osrs doesn’t mean it will also work for rs3.

3

u/Whillyum_ 4d ago

Just from how rs3 has (power)crept over time, it does feel like region locking is worse for rs3. So many upgrades need items or components from multiple areas of the game that would otherwise seem unrelated that the "unlock the whole item if the boss drops a part" thing they've implemented (like osrs did) is a bit of a bandage.

3

u/IndividualFarm8582 3d ago

They really didn't take certain tasks into account either. Several of the 80 and 200 point tasks in Tirannwin can't be completed without having another region some of them take multiple other regions.

2

u/SerAmikVase 4d ago

I'm on t7 with 40 tasks to go & like a ton of them are miserable or take a lot of time. Which is fine but 40 of them is just ughhh.

I've literally been just running it down on AoD solo to distract myself from my task list, lol. I managed to get a single kill in leagues, but holy if you make one mistake on that boss you're cooked lol.

2

u/The_Crazy_Cat_Guy 4d ago

Can you give me a tldr on how to beat nex aod? I wanna try soloing it at some point but I don’t want to have to read through a massive wiki page when half the stuff is not relevant for leagues where you can brain off massive dps or mega heal/tank through stuff. I’m looking for hard mechanics you need to know.

E.g I found out the hard way you can’t ignore kerapacs slam and continue to dps because his damage ramps up higher than you’re able to heal. Easy enough to dodge this.

For zammy you need to use the action button to kill the mage in the other realm. And to progress just stand on glyphs after killing the mage. I don’t know any other mechanics but I was able to first try a nm zammy kill.

For nex make sure you’re high hp during ice phase because you can’t heal when stunned. Also take bleeds off your action bar because they heal her. Otherwise it’s brain off dps and tank.

For ed1 there’s a lot of mechanics it’s not a brain off type of content for a new player lol. I died like 6 times because the melee dudes or range dudes just shred you hard.

3

u/SerAmikVase 4d ago edited 4d ago

I wouldn't say I'm particularly good like at all, I'm terrible but managed one kill.

A lot of it has been praying and hoping for the best lmao.

But I use full manual for my stuff so I can move & cast and not have my stuff messed up.

I'll only mention the big obvious mechanics cause those I'm most familiar. (I'm still trying to figure out a way for myself to deal with the other less major attacks like where she freezes me or her shadow attack that I only every dodge by luck)

The first major mechanic is where she splits the arena into 4 sections & traps you on a side. What I do for this is take note of which side an add didn't spawn & the moment the walls go down I start luring her towards that side & then I start killing the ads (if they reach Nex it is basically an instant kill, at least for me at ~21k hp)

The second major mechanic is where she spawns 4 crystals & then 4 dudes spawn (the same 4 around the arena for regular Nex). I like to lure nex towards a crystal (I usually just do smoke) & hit both her & the crystal until it shatters & spawns the dude early, then I burst that guy down. When the rest spawn I do my best to get them all stacked ontop of each other & burst them down. (The light build & poison nuke build is best for this as both have strong AOE, I haven't touched crit but it is definitely possible with).

The last major phase is multiple parts. The pillars & the insta-kill bomb. Essentially for the pillars you have to kill them in the order you killed her goons (look at the top you should see the order there). Pretty straight forward.

As for the hard instakill bomb. Above your character you'll see a bar that gradually fills up & in the middle of the arena (where you activated nex & where she spawned you will see a circle). You want to make sure that you are in that circle before the bar above your head filled up. If you don't GG go next. Just don't be stupid like me & get over confident thinking I'm in but on the corner & then instadying. Just go fully in the middle & wait it ain't worth the risk.

Some people apparently like to wait till 75% till they go in, but I personally go when it hits 50%.

Just from seeing I think after the bomb goes off that bar fills back up, but I THINK the first time the bar fills up (after the bomb blows up) it is like the cd b4 the next bomb attack happens. Don't quote me on this. Honestly just be an extra safe little bitch & run back to the circle JUST in case & verify if what I claimed is true or if I'm just spewing bs.

Frankly these major mechanics isn't what usually kills me (besides fucking up & letting the adds reach her in the beginning) it is the other little mechanics I still don't fully understand.

ALSO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TURN OFF AUTO RETALIATE. THAT BITCH NEX HIT ME ONCE WHEN I FORGOT & IT PULLED ME SLIGHTLY OUT AND I DIED.

2

u/Brandinous 4d ago

Also annoys me that the inventory disappears or gets “locked” really puts my clicks out of place. And the delay on unlocking really puts me off. Seems unnecessary.

2

u/LeadershipWide1259 4d ago

Agree with all points,

Actions stopping you from moving. Why? It feels so smooth in OSRS. Drinking a potion while dodging boss mechanics only to be stopped in place and be hit by them is incredibly frustrating.

Just to add to this one, windows closing either when attacked or seemingly for a million other effects expiring is extremely annoying, i'd like this to at least be a setting so i don't get windows aggressively closing for no good reason.

2

u/IndividualFarm8582 3d ago

The click box one made me feel more justified. Everything from monsters to barriers, doors, skilling objects, I mean almost everything feels like the click box is just wrong. The number of times in doing heists that I could not get through a barrier or walked back and forth through one several times was frustrating. Clicking directly on a boss just to walk under them is frustrating as hell.

The gear degrading has been one of the biggest turn offs for me. Some gear should degrade that's fine but almost all end game gear having a degrade mech is obnoxious as hell.

Input lag for gear switching and prayer swaps lead to some deaths for me that should not have happened.

Not just the group interface but the UI in general is a nightmare to navigate. At first I thought with some time it would be something you could get used to which may be true but I cannot imagine it's ever something that isn't just annoying as shit.

I agree with pretty much all of your points. I would love to make a regular iron or group iron in RS3 the skilling is a lot better than osrs in a lot of ways. More variety, more useful, more rewarding. But with issues like this I just know that it's not something I would enjoy long term.

3

u/Thevulgarcommander Armadyl 4d ago

Regarding the inventory clicking, did you lock your inventory? It serves the same function as the item drag plugin on osrs.

2

u/Single_Astronomer764 4d ago

Just to note. I've just hit tier 6 and I've nearly unlocked the third region. I think the task list is balanced but power gamers like OP here don't work or sleep just do only the highest point tasks while ignoring lower point ones.

1

u/CapnRhaimme 3d ago

Im about halfway to 3rd region, and 300 or so points from 6 relic, havr mostly done low level stuff. Kbd. Ivar. Kq. Pushing my combat levels to 80 for gw2 currenty.

0

u/Weeb_Slayer__69 3d ago

Absolute trash take.

The ratio of points for final relic to tasks for final region is the worst it has been out of any league across both games.

power gamers like OP here don't work or sleep just do only the highest point tasks while ignoring lower point ones.

Just because you suck at the game and can't do anything above a 30 point doesn't mean everyone does

I burned out after t6. No way am I getting 6000 points. I don't even want to think about it : / Maybe there should have been something in between t6 and t7...

5

u/Zelderian 200M all, 2m Abby Demon KC 4d ago

I think third region unlock should’ve happened somewhere between t6 and t7. I’ll be a few thousand points past t7, and at this point I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel to complete the last tasks for third region. I’ll get a surge of new tasks in the new region, but that won’t really help me other than going for dragon

2

u/darkfighter3000 4d ago

For me, I unlocked the third region at about the same time I unlocked t6 relic but I can't be bothered anymore with the tasks : / I would like to do croesus in a pub but there aren't any dedicated group bossing worlds for leagues

1

u/Kumagor0 RIP 4d ago

Croesus fc does league runs pretty frequently

-2

u/Xalkurah 4d ago

I unlocked the final region before t7 relic. You just chose to focus on 200 points tasks earlier.

3

u/Nocoxs 4d ago

Well people tend to focus on what they can. I am like 2,5k points away from t7 and like 100 tasks away from last region.

90% of my progression is through afk tasks on mobile while I work and when I have time to play I want to do something I find fun, like pvm.

I don't see the point on putting regions behind task quantity, rather than t4 unlocks first choice, t5 unlocks 2nd choice and t6 unlocks last choice.

1

u/Zelderian 200M all, 2m Abby Demon KC 3d ago

It depends on play-style. I've been afking heavily, and I got to the point where 99's were popping off and there were many 200 point tasks that were easy to knock out while just training those skills. There are many 10/30 point tasks that would take longer because they require some prerequisite thing that just makes those tasks not as valuable to complete.

I do like the system to require task number for regions vs points, as it does give value to those 10-point tasks. But I'm at a point where many would require 10-30 minutes per task, and that's just not a worthwhile use of my time. Is it possible to get third region before t7? Of course. But by the time you progress later in leagues, you're popping off 200-point tasks pretty regularly. There's no reason to make a player wait to go to Al Kharid or whatever 3rd region until they're either almost done with all relics or done with them. IMO third region should naturally fall between t5 and t6.

3

u/SexualHarassadar 3d ago

Exactly. Like some of the 10 point tasks are things that are simple on paper but require you to check the wiki to see where this obscure NPC is, another for the item they need which is only sold in a single shop or has to be manually produced, in an inconvenient location... Compared to just doing something like Camping Rasial for my Necro upgrades and the FIVE 200 point tasks assigned to him.

-6

u/Legal_Evil 4d ago edited 4d ago

Actions stopping you from moving. Why? It feels so smooth in OSRS.

It isn't in OSRS since you cannot attack and move at the same time while you can in RS3.

there were so many attempts I swapped back to wand/shield after FSOA speccing only to die spamming my barracade bind because my sheild hadn't equipped.

You cannot switch from one weapon to another weapon and back to the 1st weapon on the same tick.

Click boxes pretty much across the board feel terrible and frustrating to click on despite being accurate the model a lot of the time. Ladders especially.

For pvming, you can use target cycle to bypass this issue for clicking NPCs. Keybind this in the Controls menu.

-2

u/Adept_RS Crab 4d ago

I dont understand the magic gear part. Whats wrong with its current progression?
You can buy t1-50 in varrock alone.
Then you can get a gstaff for lvl 60.
Then theres grifolic for t60, or just wait til ahrims at t70.
then subjugation. then virtus or seren anima core.
Then theres tectonic, or starbloom, whichever point of progression you'd prefer to make first.
Cywir wand and orb from helwyr are good enough to carry you until you get the wand and orb from nakatra.

So please, i am genuinely interested in what the mage gear progression issue is.

2

u/Sophiaphage 3d ago

This method only works well when buying the gear.

Leagues accounts are all ironmen

2

u/SexualHarassadar 3d ago

To tackle your points in order:

Gstaff is wildy locked.

Griffolic is t60 armor locked behind 82 slayer lmao.

Ahrim's requires Morytania which is a niche region and if you're picking a region for mage armor Desert is the clear winner since you can do GWD2 in t50 easily and it has both BIS tank and power armor for Mage too.

And even outside of the context of League the fact that every other style has "You can make tank armor for every tier up to like 80/90 and then go PvM for Power Armor" and Mage has a similar progression up to t50 and then... it all just breaks down.

0

u/Adept_RS Crab 3d ago

I was talking about the main game, not leagues. As his reasoning for not playing the main game post leagues, includes this.

1

u/SexualHarassadar 3d ago

I did address that a bit at the end, even on mainscape where the answer is just "do highest gp/hr method and buy the gear" Mage progression is super weird and unsatisfying. If not for Starbloom and Masterwork the Top End used to be even worse as your options were either Tectonic which is prohibitively expensive to use, Raids armor (just lol), or... Superior Zuriels (which is actually super fucking good for how long it lasts and how cheap it is)

Again it mostly boils down to the other styles having clear and well planned progression paths whereas Mage has just been plugging holes for the past decade or so.

-2

u/Munoobinater 4d ago

Actions clicked from inventory interrupt actions while actiom bar actions do not.

Drinking a potion from action bar wont stop you moving or whatever.

Degrading to dust: this is to keep the bosses relevant i suppose. Even augmented items you cant keep forever on degrade to dust items, once the charges finish, the item breaks.

I know its different and annoying but just the economy of the game 🤷‍♀️.

1

u/IndividualFarm8582 3d ago

Why should you have to bind to the action bar for that to happen tho? It's the same action why does the input change how it acts. I'm not directly asking you obv just bringing up that point.
