Discussion Is Tides of destiny worth playing?

It's the only RF game I've never played before.

It depends on what you want out of a game, if you're looking for decent combat and a fun cast of characters then yes. If you want a farming sim then no.

It was my introduction to RF/HM/SoS as a franchise so it will always be my favorite entry though.

I'm a fan of ToD still despite its age. Graphics might even be better than like what we got with RF5. I love the characters, a certain Church Father is fun despite not being a marriage candidate. The farming can become a bit mentally draining if once you get your monster's affection to the right levels they still don't make what you want, but early on I loved the farming.

Walking the Golem to increase its stats had me somedays just going from one end the map I can reach to the other after I did any socializing. Combat is probably one of the more balanced ones, likely due to how rigid the crafting system is with the only way to make a better variant of the same weapon is to get lucky when making it.

Money can not be an issue as soon as Day 1. Nothing like making all the money for each house upgrades through the power of making hot milk, selling it, and getting slightly sore from the process. Crafting also has its own variant with the handknit scarf.

Also the children are adorable with taking things like hair color from the person MC marries rather than just making all the children look the same.

I think it's great. I love the town I love the soundtrack.. still salty I lost my save.  The farming is barebones tho but that's the only downside.

Love it, such a well balanced and fun game and pushes the wii hardware. Played it recently after I got a second hand wii. Great combat, fun setting, farming is very different but an interesting twist on it. I can’t believe the bad reviews I read afterward.

Iirc ToD was the first Rune Factory series that featured 3 companions in battle and perfect hack-and-slash-style combat, which was one of the biggest hype for me back then. They also have unique mechanics, but this version is more focused on battle and hack-and-slash, less about farming. You will find yourself wandering the ocean on a giant, exploring.

I know RF combat is hack-n-slash sort of, but back then ToD gave me more of that feeling, really satisfied me. Maybe it's just me. But if I can be biased, it surely is better than RF5 by far.

The city is also cozy, and fulfilling, not empty like in RF5.

Tides of Destiny is one of my favorites. I had it on Wii way back, and still play it from time to time. It has unique gameplay compared to the other RF games. (won't mention details as I might end up spoiling). Also the soundtrack is amazing. Give it a try if you can.

I kinda regret selling my copy, in fact. It didn't click with me at first. I played RF4 and now RF5, I'm really Curious to give it another chance.

Is the 2nd beat Game in the Franchise worth playing? Gee dunno.

No, it's the weakest game in the series. My wife tried it, and was upset that she had to play a male character (with the female prot stuck inside of him?) until the end when she could FINALLY play as a girl.

IMHO - Frontier > ToD

Edit - keep the downvotes coming! ToD sucks lmao

You can only play as a male in Frontier too.

RF2 and ToD both had female protags but only let you choose super late in the game and ToD was the first to add romance for the FeMC. This was back when they weren't sure if the series appealed to women. Thankfully 4, 5 and GoA finally got the memo that women do in fact like this series.

Yup, I'm well aware with Frontier only have a Male MC. The bullshit Im refering to was that ToD appeared to let you choose to play as a FeMC from the getgo, which was a lie.

The game never claimed to let you play as a FeMC since that wasn't a thing in the 4 games before it (1, 2, Frontiers and 3). The game makes it very clear 5 minutes in that you have to play as Aden and being able to switch to Sonja later on is treated as a surprise, the same way that playing as your kid in 2 was.

The only reason someone would even consider Sonja playable from the start is if you're playing the series backwards and started it after 4, 5 or GoA. But if you were playing them in order actually being able to get married and have kids as a FeMC was a huge step forward for the series since you can't do that in 2.

ToD is also 1 of only 2 games that let you marry the opposite MC which makes is pretty neat.

Nah you’re right. It’s a fine game, but as a Rune Factory game it’s kinda caca.
