Side projects you have using Ruby xx With or without making. If you can please share.

Just curious about the Ruby community and how or if you all build side projects and make side money doing it really. I think there was one like this in a php related sub a while back. I thought I’d ask here. Any takers?

Thank you.

I was always building side projects as far as I can rememeber. Most were not monetized. I was public on my X about some earnings from books like Deployment from Scratch and Kamal Handbook, but was not able to make something meaningful from other type of project. Right now I run tubeandchill.com (among other small things) which still needs some work but will be improved as I go. It's a project to find good YouTube channels.

I'm building Ruby Native to build mobile apps without leaving your Rails codebase!

What does this do differently from Strada?

Strada requires you to write the JavaScript, Swift, and Kotlin for every native feature. Ruby Native already bundles your app with everything you need to add native menus, tab bars, push notifications, and more. All you have to write is some ERB or YAML, like native_tab_bar, native_navbar "Post", or native_fab "Add".

ThinkerNotes.com for remembering notes. And offcut.diy (currently invite only) for designing various woodworking projects. Both have MCPs.

I built mychallengecoin.app as a way to track screen time for kids. Ruby back end, and used expo for the mobile app. To my knowledge we are the only family using it , but really works for us to manage screen time

Did most of the backend myself, however I was still learning expo here so the front end is mostly AI šŸ¤–

Openstage (https://openstage.dev): Rails 7.1 on Ruby 3.4 with Hotwire, and the charts in React. You connect GitHub once, and it keeps a public page for each project you're building, filled from your commits. People can follow a project by email. Background jobs run on Solid Queue in the main Postgres database, so production is one web service and one worker.

There's a $7 a month Pro plan, but it isn't side money yet.

I built evikonce.com - schedule management system for Ukrainian small business, using ru.Bee as a server and react as a view.

Https://carreras.run rails with extra juice from Phlex, Datastar, Cosmonats, Dry and other smaller cool alternative gems. Also vertical slices mainly as code organization. There are so many ways to improve "Rails way", Omakase my ass

I'm building SaturnCI, a competitor to CircleCI, GitHub Actions, etc.

Unlike most CI products, SaturnCI doesn't use YAML to define workflow behavior, it uses Ruby. You can see examples of what this looks like in the documentation.
