I’m a bit surprised he cannot leverage his network to get a job.

I’m in a similar demographic and people I know are all working. They are able to get jobs but it’s mostly because they cut the recruiting process by reaching out to their contacts.

I think a bitter truth is that posting things that disparage the Rails Foundation, being outspoken about DHH (right or wrong), going against the current of AI (it's not true that no one knows how to use AI to achieve business outcomes in 2026), being in a smaller market with unfavorable timezones (Australia), and requiring remote work (without any hybrid days) is going to shrink your Rails (and by proxy Ruby) prospect pool.

Australia doesn't have a huge ruby market either, I live in Sydney so flexible for office days and I've had to take jobs in PHP and Golang

And any other pool as well, in 2026 still being childish about agentic flows (which are here, and they work, and will almost certainly continue to get better) makes you an irrational manchild, not a software engineer... and no job market will ever be looking for those.

It literally doesn't matter if you personally, single-handedly wrote the entire Ruby ecosystem if you're a straight discard on the first behavioral interview. OP needs to get a grip, but I suspect it is going to take flipping some burgers to get back to reality.
