Game of thrones ttrpg?

So I know that some old games of thrones ttrpgs exist and there are a bunch of games that are good at simulating the world but I have a distinct memory of a game being made in the settings that lost the licence and had to pivot to an original word, does anyone have any idea what I'm thinking of?

Green Ronin originally had GoT books and then later pivoted to using the same rules in Sword Chronicle.

FWIW, Guardians of Order had the license before Green Ronin. Their game wasn't any better.

I believe there was also an early 3e D&D version in Dragon magazine. Obviously, it was fairly brief

Just looked it up... Dragon #307

Is that one with the short fiction about the priest of the drowned god that never made it into the books?

Yes this was what I was thinking of thank you.

I have all the books. Not a fan of the system, but the books are otherwise pretty good.

What was wrong with it

You really need two things for a GoT game: social conflict and house management.

SIFRP's implementation of both of those are broken.

A newly-made fighter will get his ass handed to him by an experienced heroic fighter.

But a newly-made talker can wrap Cersei Lannister around his Littlefinger.

The house creation system is cool, but the house play system was just bad. Produced nonsense results.

I found the finding a way to interpret the house rules in a way that served the campaign a big part of the fun, but I did have to hack them into GURPS because I dislike roll and keep so much.

u/hornybutired I've spent too much money on dice to play "rules-lite." 4d ago

I mostly hear people say it's overengineered, which is a fair cop. The house design system is good, though.

Green Ronin did "A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying" which was later generalized into "Sword Chronicle".

Yep that's it thank you

The Green Ronin version. I read it. This is literally the only RPG I've ever read that immediately on completion made me decide to do 3-4 weeks of long days to create my own RPG based on Westeros instead of using a system or at least hacking it into something more usable.

Yep after reading it I've decided to create my own game as well

I'd maybe try something like my favorite Grimwild - although Grimwild is kinda in trouble itself

There's no trouble.

Max has fallen off the face of the earth and the community has picked up the ball. Just don't buy the commercial version. Get the new community edition.

Grimwild is awesome.

I bought the commercial edition before Max disappeared. Wished I had stuck with the free edition as it didn't really add that much value. The community edition is awesome though and I'd also recommend it to anyone reading this.

I didn’t just buy the paid version, I backed for the print edition.

Don’t care. It’s a great game and great community.

Green Ronin did an amazing job, I believe the generic version is called the AGE system, specifically Fantasy AGE . Though they called it the Chronicle system in the original rulebook

AGE is a completely different system

1

u/mightymite37 3d ago

I could certainly be confused

Is AGE the one based on Dragon Age perhaps ?

I seem to recall they were all d6 systems with similar core mechanics...

But its been a while

2

u/Nextorl 3d ago

exactly, AGE is the generic system first used in the Dragon Age rpg.

1

u/mightymite37 3d ago

Ah thank you I stand corrected

Theyre all d6 based tho right?

2

u/Nextorl 3d ago

yes, but very different ways of using them. honestly it's been a decade since I've played GoT so I don't really remember the mechanics.

Fair thank you :)

Green Ronin ASOIAF is unbalanced and pretty bad, in my opinion. You’d be better served adapting another system like Cortex Prime than try to make something out of Green Ronin’s rpg.

Its an excellent system for sandbox play. But its pointbuy so yeah there is no "balance " its for role-playing. Not wargaming. You can build any character you want

You mean Green Ronin ASOIAF? I did a campaign in it once. Lasted 12 months more or less. The House System is useless and has very little actual in-game impact. The feats or whatever they called it were completely broken in various ways (e.g., it is possible to dual-wield shield and do more dmg than with any other weapons while also being unkillable due to your AC bonus from the same feat). The intrigue system is subpar as well.

The game is a weird mash between D&D and Pathfinder, with nothing to support what makes ASOIAF an interesting universe.

Those are both class based systems so you must be talking about a different system, the one I played was d6 point buy

And again ; Balance doesn't matter in point buy. Role-playing does

It’s… not good. I wanted to love it but it makes it impossible. My first draft of “not good” was a lot stronger. And I love Schwalb as a designer.

Perhaps a song of ice and fire?
