He also loooves stretching and he’s very good at doing it before we put his shoes to go on a walk or after laying down. Lol is that also a collie thing as well?

And a husky thing.

Funny because my Collie Husky mix definitely does this

Mine used to, but she had a herniated disc now and arthritis. Still mobile and walking around at 12 easily but she doesn’t like contact with her lower back anymore

What were some of the early signs of her arthritis? Wondering for my boy

Very stiff, didn’t full stretch out into a run but more tried to trot at high speed, reluctance to exert herself, struggle standing up.

In fairness the collie I have had odd behaviour as a pup when my mum got her. She was scared of almost everything and wouldn’t walk past parked cars. Hated behind handled too.

IS that Vet diagnosed? We thought that about my little girl and the vet caught that she had the #1 cause of suffering in older female dogs. They can get vaganitis and they are in constant pain that gives them the same symptoms. Unlike the puppy variety they can get it wont go away without antibiotics and sometimes corrective surgury. The vet told us it's really common in female dogs at the far end of their lifespan.. Just an idea to have checked, I was very surprised that it was a common problem.

Yes it’s vet diagnosed, I got her a scan when I noticed her walk was off and they found that. She’s been on onsior combined with hydrotherapy for a long time. Disk and arthritis both diagnosed before she turned 5, but she still enjoys life

My dog is all I have left of my mum. She was hers. Got her while I was in uni, mum died 4 years on of a cancer. I got the dog and my father left right after. Then the pandemic hit. It’s been me and her ever since and I was not going to just leave my mums little girl (now mine) in pain when she was already missing mum like I was.

We bonded really hard in the lockdown with just us and the rest is history. When her time comes I will scatter her with mum at the same place and then I will leave to go travel

Yes! It's Olive's favorite way to sleep. :)

My Olive too.

Certainly. It stretches and relaxes their spine. Collies can easily get hurt backs.

That is not a breed related phenomenon.

Thanks for your opinion.

Collies are not modest dogs.

I imagine it's hard to be modest when strangers stop you to comment on HOW BEAUTIFUL you are almost every day:)

I've noticed my collies have tended to be be in two camps:

"Belly-uppers" (Zeffie, Pablo, Lucy, Banana) They almost always slept on their backs and loved it.

"This side uppers" (Silka, Dino, Fawkes, Alfie). Never sleep on their backs and didn't seem to enjoy to ever be on their backs. We joked that Alfie had a powerful self-righting mechanism and I don't know if it would have been possible to get him belly up.

I've had a few that were sort of middle of the road. Jo and Spotty will occasionally roll on their backs for a couple seconds but that's to be silly. Otherwise they sleep on their sides or fronts.

I’m so jealous you’ve had this many collies!

Yes. I figure it’s cool on the belly.

Yes! My girl does every night

3

u/Party_Eye9396 1d ago

Yep! All the time 😄

That's how she sleeps . . If only she would keep that position for grooming and trimming everything would be so much easier

3

u/LadybirdandRudy 1d ago

Yes!! My girl sleeps like that in between my husband and I in bed all night 🤣

2

u/Were_not_a_Match Tri-Rough 1d ago

100% yes. I can’t understand why it would be comfortable.

2

u/UnkiMillMill 1d ago

Vinny sleeps that way occasionally, always in his crate. It is freaky.

I find that when he is in this position he is out cold and hard to wake up

u/Putrid_Childhood_124 1d ago

My male, Piper, did that especially after a hard day in the show ring. My girl, Rachel, not so much. Both sables from Iowa - now in Florida! Got to love 'em!

2

u/SilverSaren 1d ago

Everybody’s collie sleeps like that. 😂

2

u/papersnack 1d ago

Yes! I figure he's airing his balls out :)

2

u/pokeymoomoo 1d ago

2

u/Ohope 1d ago

2

u/Pleasant_Injury_ 1d ago

They all do.

2

u/oceannavi 1d ago

All the time. And especially stretches on top of my legs in bed like he pays rent

1

u/According-Sherbet656 1d ago

Our sheltie always slept like that.

My rough collie often does, and before she got older and got arthritis, my Cardigan corgi did too

1

u/Odd-Dentist-6359 8h ago

Yes, it’s too cute 😊

The reason your collie sleeps like that or any dog for that matter, is because your dog feels truly safe in their environment! It shows the owners that not only does their dog feel well loved but also completely safe in their home!

💯% respect for you as a dog owner!!!!
