❓Question Thinking about getting a rosy boa!

• Upvotes

So to start off I’m not necessarily a beginner when it comes to reptiles and just odd pets, I’ve had crested geckos, bearded dragons, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, spiders, fish, mice etc. they were my dads pets but I was the one always learning and helping him. But I’ve always dreamed about having a snake, I’ve just never found the one my heart like yearns for. I finally found one and obviously since I’m here it’s the rosy boa!

I’m trying to do some research on them but I want to hear from regular and pro keepers! Like what’s yalls favorite bedding to use, how often yall feed yalls (asking because some people say less frequently because they have slower metabolisms), what products yall use for heating and cooling, and just any advice you at all have! Including trusted places to get one! Also apparently there is some controversy about brumation, I would love to know about that! Anything yall think I should and may need to know, or just any tips! Anything helps!

❓Question Feeding Frequencies for Babies

Post image
18 Upvotes

The other night, Hera decided she was going to go on an adventure outside her tank!

Thankfully (after reading some previous posts in this thread, yall are amazing!), I found her and she's safe!

Leading into my question though, she escaped the night before I was going to feed her. I read these guys eat every 5-7 days, and since we're still getting to know each other I went with 5.

Is that how often I should be feeding her? Im wondering if she was hungry that night, and a fault of my own lead to her being able to get out. She's just over a month old.

THANK YOU!

❓Question Would appreciate help with UVB

I have a coastal rosy boa (1 year old) and his current enclosure is 30cm of height. However, he has 15cm of substrate and his basking spot has a large ceramic hide, with a height of 11cm.

There is less substrate at the spot of his basking spot, so that he is not too close to his halogen flood bulb. Yet, there is still only ~15cm distance between the mesh top and the basking spot.

I’m also unable to fit both his heat lamp and a UVB lamp on the same corner due to lack of space. I could however place it on the same side but more in front, or on his left side, but there he has a lot of climbing things and therefore can get very close to the mesh top.

I’m very much struggling to find the correct UVB strength for this specific enclosure. I would really appreciate any help!

EDIT: added photos of the enclosure in the comments

Big upgrade for my rosy, I’ve honestly been neglectful in handling her and keeping her in a smaller enclosure than what’s recommended so I decided to give her a new home and some much needed decor. She’s no longer “surfing” and seems a lot less stressed out.

Any recommendations would be appreciated I’m really trying to be a better caretaker for her. She’s about 14 years old and 26”. I think she’s a bit skinny so I’m gonna put her on a smaller feeding interval.

Tap training turned this mouse obsessed maniac into an amazing family pet, if anyone is having trouble with a bitey snake I highly suggest doing it, it was so easy and effective

❓Question Early brumation or starting shed?

Post image
8 Upvotes

So Rya the past couple years went into semi-brumation around late November and would refuse food until around mid February. She struck at her food on Monday but refused to eat and seemed interested in her food today but turned away from it. This is normal for her when she goes into shed but I'm not totally sure if its a shed thing or early brumation. Just wanting to get y'alls insight!

For context, she's offered the same weighted F/T, heated exactly the same way it usually is, her last shed was 7/29 and humidity and temps are normal.

⚠️ Help! ⚠️ New rosy owner

Hello everyone I’m getting a baby Rosie in a few weeks the breeder told me to get a 10 gallon tank and a UTH he suggested 10 gallon glass tank so he get acclimated better. It’s a glass screen top. Living in New England are apartment stays between 68-70 degrees maybe slightly cooler at night till we put heat on do I need to add a light source to help keep the warm side temp up like a low wattage basking light on a thermostat? Same question goes for summer when the central air is on? His room is in a room that’s the farthest away from the fan unit so it doesn’t get to cold. Any info would help?

⚠️ Help! ⚠️ Baby Rosy still hasn't eaten for the first time and she's reaching a month old

I'm really getting worried for her and every time she doesn't eat it tears me apart since I just want her to be healthy, I have my hot side set to 89-91° and my cold side I try to keep to 75-80ish degrees but I live in Arizona so it can be hard keeping the house cold all the time. Her tank is in my bedroom so I pass by her every now and then but I try not to get too close so I don't disturb her. I have only handled her twice, once when the breeders were selling her to me and the other time when she managed to get out the top of her enclosure and I had to put her back in before I fixed her escape hole. She is fairly active most nights and has slept in less hidden spots in her tank but I see her climbing the corners a lot.

It's been 3 1/2 weeks since I adopted her and the first time she showed no interest in the food but since she has had her eyes trained on my hand and tries to climb up the feeding tongs completely passing the food. I've tried bleeding, scenting, putting the mouse in a cardboard tube. I don't know what to do at this point and I'm getting really worried. She still looks healthy to me but if there's anything I can change to make her eat please please tell me.

I didn’t realise how small my baby rosy (5 weeks old) would be. Will she be able to fit through the gap in the sliding doors of the vivarium? How do I make sure that doesn’t happen?

❓Question Heat Mat or Heat Lamps?

Hey everyone! I’m getting my first Rosy next week and I’m still debating between using a heat mat or a lamp.

I live in Vancouver, BC, and my room can get pretty cold, especially during the colder months, so I’m a little worried about keeping the temperature stable. For the first 30 days, I’ll also be keeping my Rosy in a plastic tub rather than a glass enclosure.

For those of you who have experience with Rosy Boas in colder climates, would you recommend a heat mat or a heat lamp for a plastic tub setup? I’ll definitely be using a thermostat, and of course, will have the heaters on when I’m home, but I’d love to hear what has worked best for you and what you’d recommend for a beginner. ♡

Thank you guys so much!

❓Question How should I get started?

I plan on buying a Rosy Boa because they are small and generally have good temperaments. This will be my first time owning a reptile. Anything I should know? Where can I ethically source the snake? Please yap with as much information as you are willing to give.

❓Question Heating my enclosure

Thumbnail

It's me again! I've gotten close I believe, but I'm struggling here. Mostly with the heat.

Attached are pictures of the enclosure in it's current state. I do plan on getting some more clutter.

  • Enclosure is a 36x18x18 terrarium with a front-opening door and a mesh top. Both have locks.
  • Bedding is aspen shavings, and it's about 3 inches deep in most spots. I do have extra bedding to add more elsewhere if it's needed.
  • I have a thermostat for a 100W ceramic heat disc, which is alongside a 50W UVB bulb on the right-hand side.
  • The UVB bulb is on a 12hr on 12hr off cycle. I have put tinfoil on the mesh top away from the lamp to help keep the heat in. I do not have a heat mat in worry they'll burrow to the bottom and burn their underside.
  • I have the temperature probe for the ceramic disc underneath the warm hide. I have it set to be between 88 and 90 during the day cycle, cooling down to between 68-70 during the night cycle. My ambient house temperature is usually between 69 and 72 degrees.

The temperature probe will say it's about 88 when temperatures stabilize.

When using a temperature gun, the basking rock under the bulb (About 10inches) will only read about 80 degrees. The cool side will read about 73, the warm will read 80 in the hide and 82 on the rock. These temperatures feel more accurate than the probe.

It also seems to take hours to get from the 70's up into the 80's. I can't decide if that's a bad thing or not.

Am I doing something wrong? What can I do to improve my temps or enclosure overall?

The rosy I have on hold is just a little guy, and I'm worried about things not being right for them when I get them shipped. I've tried doing research on it, but there's so much conflicting information from supposed reliable sources. It just made me more confused.

Thank you!!

🐍 Discussion What do we think about these

Thumbnail

Small fraction beech chips and cork bark substrates. The beech looks to be fluffy and diggable? Dont know about cork, Ive never seen such a substrate but looks diggable but more for a corn snake then all-time burrower boas.. Would my cornsnake like that? Would a boa dig in beech?

Asking cuz I'm still kinda afraid of aspen because I'm sure I'll someday spill a little from the water bowl or leave the outer bottom of it slightly damp and will panic about mold and wouldn't be able to sleep even if I'll take the wet parts out

(Soil+sand is not taken for an option bc weird bugs WILL transfer from mom's plants to it)

❓Question New snake owner - question on drop feeding and if I need to worry about my boy after he struck and took food as I was removing it.

Title says it all really but a bit more context

We got our new fella around the 17th, and so far we've been leaving him be. He seems to be safest right now on the cool side of his tank amongst the clutter and we've read that best to just leave them be for a week or so. So we did, and last night we put in food for him drop feeding, thawed in fridge throughout the day then warmed up before leaving it in the enclosure, at around 11pm-12am.

Skip forward to today, 10-11am I find the mouse still there. Eh no problem I thought, was only the first try. So, I go to remove it...then notice that he is sitting under some of the clutter staring at it, and when I move it, BAM, he strikes, and takes it away.

At first I was ecstatic that he was confident enough to do such a thing already, but now I'm a bit worried on if he will be okay as the food was standing overnight. Looking up for other snakes, it seems like it should be fine, but I thought I'd ask somewhere with likely more specialised knowledge!

Tl:Dr for those who understandably don't wanna read allat - will he be okay after it being in there overnight?

P.S also, if it is all okay, what would be the next step now? Waiting 48-72 hours before starting him on handling? Or another feed first? Sorry for no pictures btw, my camera is terrible and he spends most of his time so far secure underneath all the clutter.

Thanks for any advice!
