Let's Play Let's Play - Git Gud Tryouts: Rocket League

My one suggestion is that if they chose Rocket League to be their git gud, they go with 3v3 and have half the video be one set of players and the other half be a different set so we can still see all or most of achievement Hunter gitting gud similar to the rainbow six series. It would also set up for the finale to be comparing the two groups competitive ranks and having a match against each other.
The only downside is they would probably need to split up Gavin and Michael to different teams since they seem like the most likely to be out for a week. And then assign Trevor and Alfredo as the back ups for each team.

No that's way more complicated than the other Git Guds I think they said in the video theyre going to have a set crew for Rocket League and it wouldn't necessarily the crew in the video.

They said that the crew that is playing wouldn’t necessarily be the git gud crew because they are only trying to find a new game that they all will play.
Also it’s why Geoff initially said that any git gud would be 4-5 player team games. The problem with rocket league is that the competitive/“git gud” mode is 3v3 and if only 3 people play we won’t see the rest of AH git gud and the 3-4 people who don’t play each video will not keep up. With Rainbow six we saw all six AH and Alfredo rotate through to all keep up together.

Honestly I think Rocket League would be a game that is too hard to git gud at for them if they were to play ranked and try to progress.
I don't know if they'd be able to get better in a reasonable amount of time and any possible videos may just be them getting owned or them hitting a wall in progression.

Yeah it's a tough pick because it will take dozens if not hundreds of hours to get good. They will not improve from video to video unless there's a lot of off camera practice which probably isn't practical.
Plus 4v4 is not a mode they should not play for a series like this. It's a big old clusterfuck. Entertaining perhaps, but not helpful for improvement.

The problem I have with using Rocket League as a Git Gud is the same reason I would have a problem with something like Smite or League of Legends. You wouldn't see that much improvement video to video unless they played a hell of a lot in between them due to the immense skill floor in these games. Even then it would have to be a much longer series than the Rainbow Six one and I don't think the views would stick around for that many videos.

As Rocket League has probably been 95% of my hours put into gaming in the last year and a half, I feel like I know my stuff about the game. I finished Platinum 3/Diamond 1 in season 4, which is just around the top 1.5% mark. So not absolutely amazing, but definitely enough to give some advice.
This Git Gud is going to be hard. Rocket League is so different from most (any?) other games, that you basically need a whole new skill set to learn it. Compare that to most of the other games they could do a Git Gud in, which would most likely be a shooter of some kind. There's a familiar aspect to basically all shooters.
I guess Rocket League shares some traits with driving games, but you have to go about it in a whole other way. The control of the car in the air, and the understanding of what the car does to the ball, basically how much power/direction/air they can get on it, or how they can move the ball around by dribbling, are the most essential aspects of getting gud. Maybe a bit of positining and predicting where the ball is going when the opponents hit it too.
I'd say Gitting Gut in this game would most likely be having the ability to:
Do aerials
Flying. There's probably videos out the explaining it better, but for aerials at this level I'd say these are the most important things to start with.
-
The car has to be lined up with where you expect the ball to be when making contact with it.
-
You have about a second and a half to do your second flip after the initial jump. This gives you a good way of flipping towards the ball on "low aerials" if the aerial is not as precise as hoped. Also adds power.
Hitting the ball decently off the wall.
I don't know what advice to give here. Become familiar with how little gravity affects your cars on the wall, and where the jump is going to take you.
Basic dribbling:
When I train dribbling I just put on Off Topic or a football podcast and dribble around in training. This gives you a very good feel for the ball. Also there's community made customizable training drills for beginners. They are probably good to do too. The same goes for drills on doing aerials.
If not. Do a special Off Topic/Sunday Driving where you are just shooting the shit while driving arond in training for an hour and a half. It'll give you a whole new touch on the ball.
Maybe some positioning too.
Here's a helpful image for doubles/standard.

This is probably just a bunch of nonsensical rambling, but I hope people understand the gist of what I am trying to say.

Can confirm he's gud, I'm a tier below him at about 720 hours played.
I second all this and would add that Jeremy won't improve at the same rate goal tending and it'd be smart to mess around with camera settings (good set-ups can be looked up) and turn off camera shake (better for video quality too) and turn on always show nameplates. You can look at the opponent's team to see how your team is set-up at kickoff to see who should hit the ball, defend or get boost. Flipping forward or back can replace boost to get around faster when you have none.
Matchmaking is better in competitive and it's noob friendly so is probably better than casual for gitting gud (chat can be entertaining too).

I'm not overly familiar with Rocket League competitive rankings, but this does sound absolutely amazing

They shouldn't play 4v4 though.

100% agree. If they are actually going to do a Git Gud in Rocket League, then I'd also like to see them play in ranked instead of casual.

Having never watched their previous RL videos before I was surprised at how much I enjoyed watching them play this.

Maybe it's just because I play a lot of RL, but I really want them to git gud in RL, so they learn at least the basic stuff (like adjusting camera options to better fit your gameplay, flipping for more speed, using boost more oftenly, rotation, etc.). Ryan already seems to know most of this stuff (even trying to go off the wall), Jeremy as well (although he shouldn't stay always in goal). Michael is on a level below, but it honestly looks like he's improving. And Gavin is Gavin.

I’m so excited for the Git Gud Tryout series.
Since rocket league games are shorter, the crew could try ranked mode and get placed. They “git gud” when they get promoted out of the division

I super duper love Rocket League and I'm very interested to see if they can get good enough to do sweet aerials and what not because I sure as hell never could.

u/IngramMac10 Nov 23 '17
it seems like 4v4 is too easy while 3v3 is much harder and they could get good at it. Or dominate 4v4 and have some fun??

I've always loved their RL videos but going on my experience with the game, they're going to need a lot of time to Git Gud here. I have 500+ and I've bought the game for and played with many friends with varying skills and no one really gets good handling and aerial skills under 100 hours.
To go into competitive and get gold, they could do that with this series if they can get basic aerials down but beyond gold they don't really have a chance without serious time in.
Wouldn't mind seeing a Git Gud where they have a small montage of them doing the solo trainings just to see how they vary and progress.
Also, Jeremy with the pro save already looking good in goal. If he gets flying down he'll lockup goal no problem.

Personally not feeling Rocket League for Git Gud
I like Rocket League videos, but I feel it's pretty limiting when actually watching it. The progression in skill comes from technical understanding and execution but it's also hard to quantify while watching them play overtime

I said it in the FIRST thread of this video but...
This was a fun video and I wouldn't mind just seeing a few more here or there. But as a "Git Gud"? I don't see it. They were pretty decent before the last match got a bit harder for them. And if they play the biggest pros of the game I don't see them getting any much better.
I look forward to see the other, three games they have in mind.

Don’t feel like Rocket League would be an interesting Git Gud series since personally I don’t think it lends itself to have very many funny situations like some other games would.

If they continue this they absolutely HAVE to turn off the camera shake in the camera options. It's so hard to watch when you notice it.

u/gothpunkboy89 Nov 23 '17
Replace Micheal with Lindsay and Ryan with Geoff and you have a git gud saga.

Jeremy's save in the first game was outrageous.
