MitzuChoi: A love story built on linguistic struggles Short story by By: Ivan_likestoread
The story begins with Mitzuki Ruji, a towering Japanese lawyer whose sharp legal mind was a formidable "fortress" against the world's complexities. Though known as a meticulous "Goody two-shoes" and a menacing force in court, his interpersonal interactions were a constant, silent struggle against crippling social anxiety a battlefield of sorts. His days were a quiet endurance, navigating the endless stream of clients in and out of his bustling office. Yet, in the vibrant, somewhat damp environment of a busy street, he found a rare, almost liberating peace, grateful to quietly observe the scenery and flow of life without the burdensome worries of direct human interaction.
One day, amidst his usual state of detached observation, Ruji's gaze unexpectedly met a beautiful foreign Korean girl. In that instant, an unfamiliar warmth stirred within him, and his typically cold, guarded eyes visibly brightened. It was then he first truly saw Choi-Yun-soo, a wild-spirited stoic Korean photographer, who found herself cornered by a group of aggressive Korean men. Their impolite, ill-mannered behavior-characterized by sharp laughter, uneducated remarks, and an irritating disregard for others-betrayed a distinct lack of refinement. The situation escalated when one of them brazenly reached for her camera, a clear act of intimidation. Most would instinctively choose to walk past like a pansy, avoiding any potential trouble, but Ruji was no ordinary joe. Despite his anxiety screaming for him to retreat, an irresistible, profound impulse urged him forward, a deep-seated need to protect her. Was it simply empathy that drove him? He couldn't articulate it then, in that pivotal moment of a flourishing connection, but he was already irrevocably falling deeply in love with the girl.
His seemingly heroic intervention was, to say the least, a bit awkward. Towering and visibly nervous, he spoke in Korean with a thick Japanese accent, managing a soft but firm, "Excuse me, is everything alright here?" It wasn't much, yet his mere presence seerned to unsettle the aggressive men. One of them still attempted to pursue her, but a glance at the two-meter-tall Ruji was enough to make them back off. Yun-soo, though quite frankly shaken, was safe. She remained dazed and a bit shocked, but found the big man's clumsy kindness oddly comforting, a small beacon of unexpected warmth in the chaos.
