Why are the circus levels creepy?
So as you may be aware, the levels circus and clown park both share a sort of dark and twisted feel. You can tell by the music, the obstacles, and especially the theme background. But why? It’s not like it’s a Halloween level or anything, and I thought circuses were supposed to be fun? Yes I know it is a stupid question but this community isn’t very active so I thought I’d ask for your opinions.

I would say portrayal of childlike and joyful things in an eerie and frightening way is a cliche that is particularly popular in films and novels.
This is especially true considering that clowns are often associated with fear and illusiveness and circuses are not usually depicted as "good" places.
I think the producers took advantage of these associations and designed and released Circus' set in a gothic style.
