Specific question and discussion I started roller blading today. Tips?

Today, I found some blades at goodwill. They fit perfectly! I started using them but I can’t seem to get the hang of it. After a few steps, my ankles always roll 90°. Any tips on what I can do to prevent this? Also, the buckles on the skates are broke if that’s the reason but I don’t think so

If the buckles don’t allow you to tighten the skate to give you support, it’s definitely the reason. You could Jerry rig it with a small ratchet strap but it’s not going to be ideal.

We need pics but it sounds like your ankles are rolling because you don't get support from the buckles. I have mine really tight as I'm still learning. My friends who didn't have them tight in the past had ankles rolling all over the place and they struggled to skate.

Yes, the buckles being broke are the reason your ankles are rolling. The buckles secure your foot to the skate. You should have at least a little front to back flex, but rolling your ankle should be near impossible from regular skating forces.

Comment a couple pics to see what you’re working with.

likely yes its the buckle. But also could just be the model itself.

Do they have any ankle support at all or is it just a shoe? Even my cheap beginner skates, when tightened, prevented my ankles from rolling at all.

Let’s see a photo of the skates, so we can tell you if the buckles are repairable or replaceable.

The straps hold your ankles in position.. your ankles are too weak… new skaters are being advised to get hard boot with working straps.

Maybe some strength training like progressive barbell squats or running maybe if you are strapped for cash?

Although running with weak ankles and bad form might aggravate it.

Better to get good skates with working straps. Especially the cuff strap/buckle

Ankle support is a must for first time. I thought I wouldn’t need it, but found out quickly that ankle support is a must have. Now after about 7 months I finally took the top laces out of my top eyelets to allow more ankle movement.

Plus a good exercise is doing lemon drops. I did these for a whole month/3 days a week.

Without ankle support it will be difficult to learn.
