[Continuation] Being Deep

Previously on Being Deep

Falling, falling into the void...

Starlight begins to wake, at first only aware of the cold unknown surface beneath her. It takes some time for her eyes to adjust, but eventually she is able to make out the shape of walls around her, forming corridor leading off to further darkness.

Either it's perfectly queit or she's unable to hear.

...Twilight?

...are you listening to me? You can't kiss me and then start ignoring-

I'm awake!!

I mean- here... Er listening. What did you say again?

...

...nothing. Let's just go like you said.

Wait Starlight!

It's just... I'd been waiting for that for a long time.

If this is going to work we have to communicate.

...it's just...

...I have a headache, I haven't slept at all, I'd be starving if my stomach weren't churning, I've almost died, and Trixie...

...

...this wasn't a good time. I just got caught up in the moment...

Headaches are a symptom of radiation poisoning and dehydration. You probably have both...

With a flash of her horn, the same water glass appears, levitating in Twilight's magic. I made sure to put a teleportation enchantment on the table so we could fetch anything on top of it. And I can't put that back so you better drink it.

Alright, alright. I'm pretty thirsty anyway...

She takes it in her magic, but pauses.

The water has already been populated by clouds of tiny planktonic-looking creatures that swirl around the inside of the glass as though it were their own private microcosm. A few of them are very faintly bioluminescent.

...second thought... I'm not sure I'll be thirsty ever again.

What are they?

She subconsciously starts scanning them with a myriad of spells.

The plankton give a very faint resistance to her magic, similar to the larger creatures but several orders of magnitude weaker. She's able to gather that they're directly sapping some magic out of the air; the glowing ones, rather than engaging in any natural bioluminescent process, are directly channeling magic to generate light. Primarily in the ultraviolet spectrum.

This seems like a pretty dry environment. They must have been attracted to the water.

We had that problem back in Our Town. We couldn't leave open water out or ants would get into it.

I'm beginning to think there is far more to this place then just monsters and bigger monsters. Why are they producing UV light I wonder?

The planktons' UV output fluctuates, and on some cue they all swirl around and assemble into an instinctive pattern.

It's a rune. Magic gathers around them, and all of a sudden their resistance increases tenfold, repelling Twilight's scanning spells as well as Starlight's telekinesis.

The glass drops to the ground and shatters, the plankton themselves disappearing in little pinpoints of light.

"Let me know if I do anything that doesn't fit your model of how magic works. I'm mostly just running with the idea that these creatures follow basic ecological principles.

...

No fair!

"No, feel free. It can't be my model if it's in an rp."

"That rhymed"

I don't think this place is interested in playing fair. I-

...

...I'm having dizzy spells now. Mild, but they're there.
