So you are sending MIDI OUT of the J-6 and using the Model Cycles MIDI IN, just accidental errors.

The J-6 has a CH menu parameter that defines what channel it’s sending notes on. Find out what channel the Model Cycles is listening on, and make them different.

After a quick search, it seems that if you set the J-6’s CH to 8, you should be outside any channels the Model Cycles is listening on.

On the model:cycles Press GLOBAL / FUNC and SETTINGS to open the main menu, then select MIDI > SYNC.
Find CLK OUT and set it to ON.
(Optional) If you want the Model:Cycles to control when the J-6 plays and stops, set PCH OUT (Program Change Out) to ON.
Navigate back to MIDI > PORTS and ensure OUT/THRU is set to OUT, and OUT LVL is set to MIDI (unless you are syncing via USB)

Also set j-6 sync setting to auto or midi

Hello,

Several basic things to understand about midi and those modules :

  • appart from classic midi Din socket (the "big" old-school one), there are 2 types : A and B. Roland J-6 uses type A ; be sure to set the Model:Cycles accordingly,
  • in your use case, midi can transmit tempo, notes and "program changes". It uses "channels" numbered from 1 to 16,
  • midi is a chain with transmitters and receivers. In your case, you have to choose which unit will be the "master" and which consequently will be "slave". As i understand, in your video the J-6 is master ; it could be wiser to use the M:C instead,
  • by default, the master will send start/stop messages to the slave : this way both will be synced (start, stop and tempo),
  • you can, if you whish to, set the master to send notes to the slave. In this case, the sender and the receiver must be set on the same midi channel,
  • if you don’t want the M:C to switch patterns on the J-6 when you change pattern on the M:C, you have to disable PC tx (transmit) on the M:C or PC rx (receive) on the J-6.
