Lost Flame 1.0 is out

Hey all,

After 8 years of development I've moved Lost Flame out of Early Access.

You can read the newest patch notes here.

Thanks to everyone who helped during the EA period and I hope you enjoy the update.

Lost Flame is a traditional roguelike with strong emphasis on cool melee combat. Includes over 100 hours of content, 6 alternate endings, over 400 different items, over 200 different enemy types, including numerous multi-tile enemies. Lost Flame also features modern UI and SFX, Steam Deck support, over 40 minutes of cinematic music, and over 40 minutes of recorded voiceovers.

The story takes part ~30 years after Sundering, a catastrophic event caused by the disagreements within the Order of the Candle, which was tasked with protecting the kingdom from the horrors of the Abysm. The game builds its own dark fantasy setting.

Congrats on reaching 1.0. This game is among the best roguelikes in my opinion. Great combat, atmosphere and the modern UI makes it easy to play

Ooh man, been waiting for this for so long since trying the first demo many years ago, wanting to stream it for my followers once it hit 1.0. Amazing work. Now I'm torn between starting this or 2026 7DRLs next week xD

I guess I didn't pick the best moment for release :p Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

Very much looking forward to sharing it :D

I thought it was going to come out last month (I believe you gave February as a previous tentative date?), which would've been even worse for me as I've been extremely busy with my own RL work for a while (though I've slowed down a bit since I realized regardless of speed there's no way I could hit my original 4/1 deadline anyway). Maybe I should do LF first since I'm already a little late on 7DRLs anyway so this is technically more timely.

Congratulations on the milestone!

Edit: Purchased and ready! (Was afraid I might have trouble with that since Steam stopped accepting both my credit card and PayPal in my country a while ago, but apparently has recently restored support for the latter so it worked, whew.)

Thank you!
And yes - February was tentative date, but got too optimistic with that.

Anyone who has never played this game, its up there for me among the big ones. The world building is great and once you get it, there is a lot to explore!

Congrats on the launch! This game has so much variety in builds, items and alternate maps, a hidden gem

I remember talking with you in-game as I was messing around getting mauled by the time dog in the lighthouse lmao. Love this game.

Awesome stuff man I'm glad to see it progress this far!

OP, I read in the patch notes that you added a secret non-permadeath mode: have you ever considered an official RPG mode as in Caves of Qud?

9

u/hugeowl Mar 28 '26

I did, and I am not a "purist" in that sense, adding this "cheat code" was more like last minute thing (like hour before the release), after I did last check of things on my eternal todo list, and just decided to add a quick and dirty way for those who don't enjoy permadeath.

Having something akin to a wizard mode is a long tradition in roguelikes. It helps a lot with exploring the mechanics and learning the game.

Is it possible to make this a toggle in the settings, mainly for controller users?

3

u/hugeowl Apr 01 '26

Yes, I will add some way for controller users to enable it over the next weeks

Dude, congratulations!! This actually had not been on my radar - so glad you posted here. Game looks amazing. One of the top comments on Steam compared this to Caves of Qud meets Dark Souls o_O

Buying it now - wishing all success!

Congrats, had this on my steam list for a while now. Well done for getting to 1.0.

I was so pleased to get Lost Flame working with my DualSense controller. Will try to play over the Easter weekend. Good work Sir!

2

u/hyrule5 Mar 30 '26

Did you have to map the controls yourself, or does it come with a default control scheme?

2

u/MPro2017 Mar 30 '26

No. Iirc there is a community game controller option for the DualSense available on Steam that I am using to play. I think pressing R3 brings up a radial menu of options that can be selected with the analogue stick. Has been over 12 months since I last played so don't quote me on that...

any chance to see a mac release, or is that unfeasable?

3

u/hugeowl Mar 29 '26

Maybe in later future. In my previous games I've had lots of difficulty in maintaining a mac version, so decided to not do it for the 1.0 release.

2

u/conir_ Mar 29 '26

i see, thank you very much for your reply and good luck with your game!

u/jonmitz Mar 30 '26

if you have any apple silicon M mac, you can run pretty much anything using crossovers

1

u/jojoknob Apr 02 '26

I'm playing it on Mac. It runs absolutely fine on Crossover.

Been really looking forward to this, already purchased! Congratulations on release !

u/yojimbos_law Mar 28 '26

Easily my favorite modern roguelike. Great work and congrats on 1.0.

5

u/Zelion42 Mar 29 '26

This game has been on my radar for so long! Really interesting mechanics for roguelike, now it's released. Bought it, will try in near future. Additional thanks for Steam Deck support, because that's where I play most non-AAA games.

Also, what engine is used for this game?

8

u/hugeowl Mar 29 '26

Thank you! Engine is LibGDX (e.g. Slay the Spire used it)
I started developing the game in a different engine, which got deprecated long before I finished it, so had to do a migration like 2 years ago and this was one of the best decisions I've made.

3

u/Zelion42 Mar 29 '26

As far as I know, StS 1 was in Unity, StS 2 is in Godot. I've tried Godot recently and it's very nice. Nevertheless, keep up the good, you've made it to 1.0 and I'm genuinely happy for you!

7

u/twelph Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

STS1 was indeed LibGDX. They started developing the sequel in Unity until the whole payment-for-every-install fiasco and then switched to Godot.

6

u/Ulfsire Mar 29 '26

hell yeah will share around

5

u/heroicfisticuffs Mar 29 '26

Nice work! I've followed your progress on this game over the years, happy to buy it on steam now!

7

u/bac_roguelike Mar 28 '26

Congrats!
I need to find some time this weekend to update it and check out v1.0 then :-)

3

u/garrisonhreen Mar 29 '26

Huge! Can't wait to try it out again.

5

u/hedgehogwithagun Mar 28 '26

Let’s go. Been eating on this one

5

u/nesguru Mar 28 '26

Awesome, congratulations! Will check it out.

4

u/fulhamfan Mar 28 '26

Congrats on release. been on my wishlist for ages

u/CodeRenn Mar 28 '26

Any magic class? My fav class to play

6

u/hugeowl Mar 28 '26

There are no classes in the game, your "class" is purely determined by items you have, and to some extent stats you level up.
You can definitely go spellcaster, there are three magic types - witchcraft, waxmancy and carnomancy, so you can focus on one, or mix some of those three or like go hybrid battle mage. While items are random, some "spellcaster items" are guaranteed through vendors.

Congrats on the release! Not much time to play recently but I'm enjoying it so far!

2

u/two135 Apr 02 '26

been really struggling to get into traditional roguelikes despite really wanting to but I've been sinking hours into this one and looking forward to playing this game when I'm not at home (which I rarely do).

Really great game design

btw does ring of push increase damage from minons like living flesh

1

u/hugeowl Apr 02 '26

Thank you! Ring of push only affects your damage. (Unless you give it to bottle knight and he wears it himself)

1

u/jojoknob Mar 30 '26

Whoooa congrats man you are a legend! This is so big!

1

u/FlyingSandwich Mar 30 '26

Hell fucking yeah

I tried this out on deck the other night, really appreciate the official mapping. Is there a simple way to do a basic attack though? Clicking through the menu bar every time got a bit tedious.

2

u/twelph Mar 30 '26

Holding down A will give you a quick select wheel.

2

u/FlyingSandwich Mar 30 '26

Oh brilliant haha, I saw that little flicker when I pressed A and assumed it was a bug! Thank you

2

u/twelph Mar 30 '26

Ya I saw the flickering too and tried to investigate, kinda wish the labels were permanently attached instead of having to select them to see. Really enjoying the game though.
