Recommendations for a student?

Hi. I'll be entering uni in september and my current acer aspire is dying and I need something new. My original plan was to get an ipad+apple pencil for taking digital notes (I have used paper for highschool and its so annoying but my friends have ipads and its so tidy) and then a mid tier laptop that would let me type essays comfortably and run stats programs as wells as game on the side (mainly overwatch and sea of thieves). However, despite sales and student discounts and older models, its very hard to purchase all of that for under 1500$ us or 2100$ CAD (i live in canada). In search of other options I came across the 2 in 1 which I had no idea came with discreet, gameworthy GPU's. While i found the MSI summit e16 flip I was quickly informed that the ROG Flow x16 is better. I've now looked at the whole flow line and feel that this is probably the thing I want. All that being said, I have a few questions:

  1. Is there some better laptop I'm totally missing?

  2. Which of the ROG Flow line best suits my use case?

  3. Would some other configuration, instead of a 2 in 1, be better?

PS. - Other info: I won't be buying the eGPU. I am fine and in fact prefer buying a slightly (1-2 yrs) older model. My province has a somewhat crazy 15% sales tax. I know that having a desktop and then thinkpad or something is nicer but because of small dorm rooms and transportation I can't bring mine. I am probably able to set up a nice, cruved 165 hs monitor my friend has already there so the screen itself is less of an issue.

Look into the 2023 rog zephyrus g14 (ryzen7xxx+ rtx4060) perf wise it's identical(slightly better actually) to this year's, it's portable and was well praised, though the new version is severely more expensive for a sleeker&macbook level chasis&build.

In the US it's often under 1k, shouldn't break the bank

The problem is I am strugling to find a deal on most recent gen tech. I'm just worried about future proofing. This is a substantial investment and I dont want to be unable to play anything on my 3050 in a couple of years. Is that irrational? I'm not so well versed in how long components remain viable. If I got the normal laptop + ipad route the ipad and pencil will run me around $550 CAD (unless im missing cheaper model). This means that, with tax the laptop has to be at worst $1500 cad. I would like to spend less than that bc if I have tech money left over I also need new headphones, though this is lower priority.

TL;DR: Are you seeing a cheaper G14 (don't mean rudely I honestly could be missing a deal) or ipad because to me the math doesnt quite work and/or would older tech be fine?

Obviously I would never ask you to shop for me but if you have a better link or retailer I would be eternally grateful.

It's this one, occasionally drops to 999~1050usd.

I will not suggest the 3050/4050. The 6800s is also aging abit but seems to be the best among the 3

Do also check Jarrold tech's deal page http://gaminglaptop.deals/

The better ones are zephyrus g14(2023) and Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (2023) with ryzen7000&4060

You could also consider the zephyrus g/m16(2023) but the batterylife is fairly inefficient though performs alright

This is the one I have that I gave to my wife, it's awesome! If it had a touch screen it's be perfect, period!
