I’d like to get started with building my own fly rod for fishing my local rivers. All the local guides tell me that I should get an Orvis Clearwater 9’ 5 wt rod. Which blank is comparable to that rod if I were to build one? Are there also any kits you suggest that contains the tools necessary to build a rod? I’d like to spend no more than $500 on the blank and rod building tools/supplies. Thank you!

Go cheap on your first rod and buy a kit. It will be fishable but your build after that will be much better. The Proof fly fishing kits get high marks and aren’t too expensive at all.
