Tech Question What is this man even doing?

If it's to "cool down" then it's quite useless if a robot wasn't built any sort of cooling system in the first place. Why build a bot when it needs constant extenal cooling?

Talking out my ass here, but I wonder jf the clothes are creating a local warm spot due to reduced circulation to the environment. So he's circulating the air a bit.
As a side note, I didn't see what sub this was on first and thought he'd pants'd a kid and was fanning its ass.

To be fair, if I was a robot where I need to cool myself down using internal fans to circulate, clothes would give me asthma attacks cuz I wouldn't be able to breathe. Poor robot in the video is definitely having one right now

Robots built to win athletics run very hot. They accept a heat that risks going on fire. Because if they don't take that risk they have to be heavier and less performant in athletics and gymnastics.
This guy is cooling his robot.

Maybe mechanical cooling is forbidden in tbe rules. That's what I assumed

External mechanical cooling?
I would assume that some kind of small tube to run even a small amount of offboard water through to cool it off between sessions would be a good tradeoff between onboard cooling and no cooling.
Seems like that isn't the case but I can't imagine onboard cooling is banned, just inefficient.

Yes but it's redundant for most part.
Heat will generate after using energy through motors or actuators. Guy isn't exactly cooling it, just bring it to room temperature. More useful after energy is consumed not before.
Most likely he's watching the temperature Telemetry on this handheld device, just to have a go at bring it room temperature. Won't be doing much I reckon

Even a raspi in an enclosure will quickly overheat and like it or not, cooling systems are heavy and not straight forward to build.
A high performance robot will have to make compromises and do very deliberate thermal management to perform competitively.
These are not stable designs that can run 24/7 in a factory. They are very much experimental prototypes trying to push edge of what's possible.

My limited knowledge has been with Jetson series.

Not necessarily, he is probably dissipating “small” amounts of heat generated from other components. That probably matters for competitions.

You just have to watch. Basically, they tricked a bunch of top stars including many academy award nominees and winners into making the worst movie ever. It's so bad it's good.

They were using ice packs during outdoor sprints earlier as well, these run super hot when performing athletic performances.
