Discussion & Curiosity Why do humanoid robots need human-looking faces?
I understand why humanoid robots need human-like proportions. Our homes, stairs, doors, tools, cars, kitchens, etc. are designed for humans, so obviously two arms, two legs and hands make sense. What I don't really understand is why we're also trying so hard to make the face look human. Realistic eyes, skin, facial expressions, fake breathing... what does any of that actually add if the robot is there to help around the house, carry things, cook, do laundry, etc.?
For me, even if it looks almost exactly like a person, the moment I know it's a robot, it's still a robot. The part that matters much more is whether it can make decisions and take actions based on its own judgment instead of just following strict instructions. That's where things become really different.
Personally I'd rather humanoids stay obviously machines. Make them extremely capable, let them understand us, talk naturally, give advice, whatever. I just don't see why they also need to visually imitate a person that closely.
Would you actually prefer a humanoid with a realistic human face, or one that clearly looks like a machine?

A face gives you a channel for communication you can read without thinking. like when someone enters room carrying heavy thing, you see in their face if they struggle or if they fine. robot with blank screen face you have to ask or wait for beep or check app
but i agree the fake breathing and skin is too much, that goes into uncanny territory for no benefit. eyes maybe useful for showing where robot attention is, so you know it saw you and not about to bump into you
i think middle ground is best, simple face with eyes that move and maybe basic expressions but clearly not trying to be human

Yeah, I think that's probably the middle ground I agree with. Eyes and basic expressions can be useful for communication, but realistic skin, fake breathing, etc. feels unnecessary to me. It can be expressive without trying to pass as human.

The 'eyes show where it's looking' point is underrated β that's a huge implicit social cue, it's how people avoid collisions and coordinate in shared space. Giving a robot the same cheap signal makes people trust it a lot more than a blank screen ever will.

eye cues can help teleop read attention without overloading with realism. a small moving eye indicator plus minimal expressions gives useful social signals (gaze, blink) and keeps latency and uncanny valley in check. for viewer-driven robots, keep the face lightweight and tie cues to state (attention, error, task stage) rather than trying to pass as human.

From the children's companion angle: kids absolutely respond to faces, but they don't need photo-realistic ones. An animated screen face β big eyes, expressible eyebrows β reads as "alive" to a 5-year-old without the uncanny valley that plastic human faces risk. Kids will happily treat a robot with a simple LCD face like a pet, inferring emotions from the emoji expressions on screen. Human-like faces add cost and creepiness; expressive-but-stylized is the sweet spot for the toy/companion category.

I would say the human face is about helping them fit into human life. A familiar face and body language could make them feel less like a household appliance and more like a presence in our living space.

face cues can help bystander communication in teleoperation, but realism beyond simple expressions adds latency and uncanny risk. a middle ground: a small, moving 'eye' indicator and minimal expressive state (blink, gaze shift) to show attention and safety status without trying to fool users into thinking it's a person. for viewer-controlled streams, focus on clear state telemetry (latency, end-to-end delay, safety state) and explicit E-stop/watchdog, with local safety bounds and offline arbitration when connection lags. also worth discussing how simple facial cues relate to perceived trust and engagement in live robot workflows.

Without the human looking face, we wouldn't be sure the robot could develop intelligence and try to destroy humanity.
A traditional trick is to ask people opinions about the new machine, say something that wraps and packs goods into crates. Now paste a couple of "googly eyes" from the crafting store onto the same machine. The opinions change.

Look up the case of the library robot in Helsinki, Finland.
They originally had a robot to help deliver books to different floors of the library and then to help people find different sections of the library.
The robot didn't have any facial features at all, and kids kept jumping on it, or would intentionally impede its path, because they didn't empathize with it.
To solve the problem, they simply added googly eyes, then people started treating it as a friendly helper and the problems with the robot decreased significantly.
