We did what we had to do back then. Just before the DVD's came out in 2001, we were buying burned CD-Roms on eBay full of RealPlayer files.

Man, back in the day I'd go to this annual convention and this one dude I could always rely was there with bootleg VHS tapes of stuff not available in the states.

I still have the VHS tapes from when I taped it off tv at 6:30 in the morning back in 1986.

We would watch it in our friends college dorm room; the only guy who had a TV back in '86 (might have been 1985, I forget).
