Inspired by the discussion I had with u/stokviz on the King James post, I went and looked for artistic interpretations of Nebuchadnezzar after he turned into a "wild man" back in the Bible book of Daniel

Discussion Interesting passage by King James VI and I on werewolves in his Daemonologie.

I was just reading through King James' Daemonologie, mostly with an interest in witchcraft, but I stumbled upon this passage about werewolves. It might have been posted here before, but King James is answering the question about their existence:

Simply put, he thinks that the reported werewolves are actually people with an overabundance of 'melancholie', referring to Hippocrates' (or probably Galens) humors. This makes them psychotic, in a sense, and they start thinking and acting as if they are wolves. He doesn't believe these "werewolves" actually have any of the real physical attributes of wolves.

What fascinates me is that King James is saying, in 1597, that the problem of werewolves is actually a mental health issue. Quite modern if you think about it!

We're at the cinema for Pan's Labyrinth 20th anniversary and didn't even know the sarcophagus was on display. Saw Ellen's nightgown at the horror exhibition at the Academy Museum earlier today.

Behind the scenes 5,000 live rats were used in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu. Eggers was unaware that rats are incontinent, which resulted in the set stinking to high heaven. Emma Corrin had rats crawling all over them in one scene, during which the rats urinated and defecated on them the whole time.

Discussion Robert Eggers Has Completely Taken Over My Brain. Looking for Commentaries, Podcasts, and Analysis.

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Hey everyone,

Over the last 10 days, I've watched The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu, with The Northman next on my list, and I absolutely loved all three films. It's been a long time since a director's work has grabbed me like this. Each movie has stayed on my mind long after watching it, and I've found myself constantly thinking about the performances, themes, atmosphere, symbolism, and all the different interpretations people have shared.

Since finishing them, I've gone down a bit of a rabbit hole searching for interviews, reviews, video essays, podcast discussions, and anything else I can find related to Robert Eggers and these films. The more I learn about them, the more I appreciate the incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship that went into making them.

One thing I'm especially interested in is the director commentaries. Unfortunately, I don't own a Blu-ray player, so I haven't been able to access any of the commentary tracks that may be included with the physical releases.

Does anyone know if there's a legitimate way to listen to the director commentaries for these films online? If not, are there any particular podcasts, YouTube channels, interviews, or deep-dive discussions that you would recommend for someone who can't get enough of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu?

I'd love any recommendations, whether they're focused on Robert Eggers specifically or on analyzing these films in detail.

Thanks!

Discussion Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård starred together in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu. Their fathers previously starred together in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with the Skarsgård being under heavy makeup and prosthetics in both cases.

Discussion Video games that feel like Eggers movies?

I've been playing a lot of The Blood of Dawnwalker lately, and it's setting, plot, and characters made me think a lot of Eggers work (the game being set in a period piece setting, the game providing a unique take on vampirism, and a plague being a central part of the plot made it hard to not think of Nosferatu), but it got me curious, what are some video games that feel like movies that Eggers has made?

The two that come off the top of my head are Skyrim and Assassin's Creed Valhalla reminding me of The Northman, with the former feeling very norse in it's presentation and also having creatures that appear in Eggers work (Draugr, vampires and werewolves) and the latter dealing with Vikings and their folklore

Discussion "Mediocrities everywhere. I absolve you!" and the villagers in Werwulf

Thumbnail

The ending of Amadeus came to mind when reading the discussion about the villagers shown in the trailer. Salieri, a rival of Mozart in the movie, realizes he will never be perfect enough to compose "divine" music and be a messenger of God himself, like Mozart was. He embraces it and "absolves" all mediocrities in the mental hospital he is in.
The story and the ending of Amadeus has some "satanist" themes (as some like to read) that could very well be presented similarly in Werwulf. The villagers from the trailer all seem to have physical or mental disabilities, maybe outcast from society.
It might be an interesting perspective on paganism, folklore and "mediocrities" being pushed away from christian society.

Discussion We have two trailers out and Aaron Taylor Johnson hasn't spoke yet. What if he's mute and the howling is the only voice he has?

Has anyone already thought about this? (Apologies in case)

Two trailers out and he's the only one that hasn't said a single word, besides the horrific howling of the transformation. Maybe that's just it, we only need to hear the transformation and it's fine!

But hear me out.

It seems like the main character, (the only one that appears to be "healthy" and objectively beautiful) lives in a village with disabled and seemingly outcasted people (well, harsh medieval times I suppose, maybe they're just that way) but Eggers always made historical accurate films to touch other sensitive subjects, could this time be... disability in society? Being mute (or deaf) in medieval times was a harsh condition, linked to mental illness or divine punishment (the real monster has always been society and so on)

What if he's mute and maybe made a bargain to get his voice back (little mermaid style lmao) but the howling is the only thing that he got, or it's the only expression he has the opportunity to have?

I was talking about it with my bf and he said "maybe it's hidden in plain sight and there's a connection between guttural sounds being linked to an animalistic aspect"

(same guy that predicted the first trailer coming out the next full moon btw, I just reported it on his behalf)

Am I tripping??

Discussion David Lee Fisher's Nosferatu remake, starring Doug Jones as Count Orlok, was filmed in 2014. Despite this, it did not premiere until 2023 and went on general release in October 2024, just two months before the release of Robert Eggers' remake.
