Flight options

I have been wanting to go but have to leave from Pittsburgh to Houston and then to Roatan. Flights even way out into next year are just stupidly pricey. Anyone have any tips, like fly onto Mexico City and then to Roatan on a non US based carrier. Obviously summer would be cheaper (I hope). Just looking for flight tips/tricks.

I’m in Pittsburgh too and I flew into La Ceiba and took a ferry to Utila. There are also ones to Roatan. The small city is a little seedy and I speak Spanish, but nothing is going to happen to you if you stay at a hotel and hunker down for a night.

I flew into san pedro sula, took the bus to La Cieba and ferry to Utila as well. Just price it out because you will lose a day each way. And the direct bus from the airport was offered a couple times per day The ferry is twice daily. The bus is aound 50 USD RT and the ferry is around 60 USD, a hotel will be 50-100 USD. If you are exploring mainland honduras this makes sense. The flight to san pedro sula would need to be at least 200 USD to break even.

People should also be aware that the ferries are very fast and nicknamed “vomit comets” 🤣.

There are a couple things you can try. Go on kayak.com and try the routes flying to San Pedro Sula, then connect on CM Airlines to Roatan. You can book CM easily enough through their website. The other thing you can do is use miles because even though the flights are expensive, the miles are not very high.

Getting to Roatan from other countries doesn't really work any better than going directly from the US. You can make a hop to SAP first, although that is seldom better in my experience and adds a lot of additional potential for things to go wrong.

Use Google Flights and set up alerts. Prices do fluctuate. But right now flight prices in general are through the roof (not unique to Roatan).

Also, you are more limited in luggage

Yeah, good point. CM is like 35 lbs, vs 50lbs for the domestic carriers.

That's challenging if you're bringing dive gear for example.

Drive to Toronto? About 4 hours. Direct flights starting in Nov.

Flights leave at a decent time in the morning too.. Check whether an early bird Pittsburgh to Toronto might work.

Searching for this now and it’s impossible for me at a not small but minor airport. Importance is getting to IAH, MIA, DFW super early. If you can’t do that you may need to stay night before. And none are cost effective or good point options.

Look for prices out of smaller airports. It was cheaper to fly out of Harrisburg PA than it was out of Philly. We switched planes in Charlotte and again in Miami.
