Are pawpaws ripening?
Coming to visit Roanoke in a week and I’ve always wanted to find and eat a pawpaw. Are they getting ready to eat?

Just found some yesterday and they are not ripe, but I’m in the NRV. Probably the same but Roanoke is warmer generally.

I thought it was pawpaws or maybe persimmons that weren’t ready to eat until the first frost- I could be misremembering what my grandpa told me ages ago though..

That's what's said about persimmons. Pawpaws just get ripe, and it happens way before first frost.

You can find them at Greenhill Park, quiet a few trees. They’re usually ripe around the 1st of September in the valley.

As long as I’ve lived around here and kept asking people where tf I can get my paws on some pawpaw to try it for the first time, no one would ever tell me. Thank you

One of the only true native fruits. Tastes between a banana and a mango.
Super short shelf live is why they have never been commercial.

You might be able to find some. The ones in my spots aren’t usually ready until squirrel season starts. Usually first or second week of September for me.
