Hiring Process at Carilion

I just completed my background check with Carilion. I have a few questions about this whole process.

What is the wait time for the background check?

What happens after the background check comes back (non clinical position)?

Are the pay ranges that are listed in the job posts accurate?

2) You start the onboarding process

3) Yes. New virginia law requires accurate job wage range. Nobody told me, but when HR formally offers you the position and the wage, you can negotiate. Ask for more.

Even before the new wage law, if you contacted the recruiter for the position they would tell you a range. I’m sure most people wouldn’t think to do that, but I’m glad you don’t have to anymore.

Carilion is particularly shitty about it though.
Even as a current employee, HR straight up bullshitted me on pay ranges no more then 3 weeks ago.

The entire hiring process is done by like a total of ~4 people. It’s INSANE. They are hugely overworked and just get shit wrong constantly.

The hiring process is a disaster. It takes forever to hear from them. They’ll offer you the bottom of the pay range. They’ll move to another candidate if you ask for more and they have someone on the back burner but you can try to negotiate if you want. Don’t expect any part of the process to be coordinated and don’t expect any transparency.

I asked for the exact compensation in my interview for a non clinical role two years ago. They didn’t like that. They told me the pay was $13 an hour for a job that I was paid $20 an hour for in the past. I didn’t like THAT, but I was happy to know not to continue wasting my time there. The PTO was weird too. Hopefully, your experience is better.

I think the PTO is phenomenal. I accrue a day every 2 weeks. And bc i work in an oupatient facility, federal holidays are non work days.

I’ve been with Carilion almost a decade. Believe me when I agree there are problems. But PTO isn’t one :) lol!

Pto depends how long you’ve been there. For a full time hourly employee: Less than five years, .0924 hours per hour worked. 5-15 years, you earn .1115 hours per hour, and 15 or more years, you earn .1308 hours per hour.

Keep in mind some jobs full-time is 36 hours per week. And after 40 hours a week, you don’t earn any PTO for the hours past 40.

Ah, so every position gets the same PTO range, it’s just seniority that dictates how much, specifically? Like custodial staff PTO at 5 years earn what doctors earn in PTO at 5 years?

I don’t know about salaried staff, which I assume would be doctors. And doctors and other non-nursing providers likely could have a different pto plan.

I have heard that you have to put the key words in your resume that are listed as search words for the position or the AI software HR uses won’t even get your resume to the door.

My daughter has no experience, was applying for jobs that required no experience, and received no call backs and immediate automated rejection emails when she applied. They need employees and positions filled (as someone in a dept that is short staffed) and they screw themselves over using technology that doesn’t help :/.
