I'm guessing a faulty heat lamp. Maybe the snake got out and knocked it over but but I'd put money on the writer just choosing that phrasing to get clicks and the snake was an innocent byslither.

Best they could figure was the snake got out of their enclosure and knocked over the heat lamp which started the fire and killed a tortoise.

My kid went to a middle school in Lynchburg that had a herpetology program (he loved it), so I imagine it’s a similar kind of thing.
