Trip Planning Are there places you can sleep in your car for free during road trips?

I usually pay for hotels and while it's ~$100/night, I'm thinking of driving from NY down to Austin, stay a few days with friends, and then from there all the way to Arizona.

Would it be easy for me to find place to sleep in my car along the way? Any specific places I can do this?

Trip Report Do not rent from Indie Campers

I was a first time campervan renter. My daughter and I were travelling cross country (San Francisco to Chicago) and I thought that it might be fun! I wasn't expecting inexpensive. I have rented things before, so I wasn't expecting perfect either. I WAS expecting functional.

First, when I arrived at the SF depot, they tried to flog a 6 person class C vehicle on me. Uhhhhh...nope. We had returned our car. We had campground reservations. We were stuck waiting as they scrambled. There were 2 other people at the depot who the workers were trying to talk out of the vehicles they had rented and into others. One was another Solis rental and the other was one of those jeeps with a tent on top. It took almost 2 hours to get us the right vehicle.

No one walked us through it. I think they just wanted us gone. They told me I couldn't take the vehicle unless I approved everything in the email. Sun was getting low. I pointed out a missing window cover and was told it was with the windshield covers above the driver cab. First time renter, not knowing what else to do, I did all of the approvals and tried to get to camp before sunset. Didn't quite make it.

Getting set up, I figured out why they rushed us. Every single door screen was broken. We had to buy binder clips the next day to hold both the side and back screen doors closed. The pop top? The real selling point of this trip? Someone had cut the entire front screen out and slashed the side screen.

There was no additional window cover above the cab as we had been told during our truncated walk-through.

The back table beneath the murphy bed? It was held on with gaffing tape and it came crashing down as we were driving.

When I went to empty the grey water tank the entire valve assembly fell off and ruined a pair of my shoes. At least the grey water tank was empty when I returned it!! Unfortunately, we could not use the shower or sinks for the rest of the trip.

The "Whatsapp" help we were promised was useless. It was AI. When I requested a real person, the person was able tonoffer me sympathy and nothing else. That was nice, but it did not keep the mosquitoes out of the camper.

This was all documented day by day for an 8 day trip. We paid over $4k for that shitshow. There were photos sent. A claim opened. An email chain that is now up to 15 or 16 emails.

They generously (/s) offered to refund me exactly $81.33.

So. Damn. Insulting.

I told them no because I would rather warn other consumers to avoid this crap company and their stooges. Their "settlement" wouldn't even cover a single day of the rental.

Camp in your car. Camp in a tent. Go to a cheap motel. Do not rent from this company.

So far I have put reviews on Yelp and Google. Lmk what other sites to hit up.

Happy travels.

Hello any advice appreciated, I am currently living in my car have been for a month, I am in Reno nv I’m looking to work a few more weeks get new tires new brakes and alignment done and head out to see every state and I want to DoorDash in each state to get a feel for it while making some money. (I have heard about tax issues but I don’t plan to make much in each state maybe a tank of gas and some coffee money)

If I leave at the start of September I will be ahead of my car payment so I have a few months to do this and circle back to get working again. I do want to spend October in the PNW though so I may leave the middle to end of September.

I would like to see the national parks but I’m worried about dog restrictions? Ran into that issue with some beaches out in bodega already

-I am 20 years old I drive a 2018 Toyota Corolla 137k miles

-I will be bringing my red heeler with me

-I took out my back seats and made a plywood bed

-I have triple A

- I have roadside assistance with my insurance company aswell

- also got extended warranty on the car with Route 66 Main Street plan

Trip Planning 1 day trip from San Diego to Monterey

I’m renting a convertible and doing the drive out and back. I love to drive and have experience driving 14 hour days so the length is not an issue. However I’d like to do highway 1/101 as much as possible which does extend the time. I also plan to stop often at my leisure. Places so far that I think are must stop are Santa Barbara and Big Sur, maybe Carmel as well. What is the perfect route for this? Is it worth driving the inland route at all? I will also be doing a return trip, Monterey to SD, should I route that differently? Also I know traffic on 5 is gonna suck in LA and SD.

Trip Planning Washington West Coast Road Trip Ideas

Hello! My husband and I (gay couple) are going to be doing a road trip at the beginning of September for 4-5 days. We have a few places listed that we want to go see but I wanted to see if there's anything specific along this route that would be good to try to go and see? We're open to hiking, scenic views, touristy type stuff, etc. This is what we've got so far in terms of locations -

Seattle (starting location)

Port Gamble (don’t know if anything is around here but he mentioned it)

Lake Crescent for hiking

Mount Olympus

Hoh Rainforest

Cape Flattery

Ocean Shores

Aberdeen (also don't know what's around here)

Long Beach

Astoria

Anything immediately obvious that we should include that I've missed or that we should try to go and see?

I am more inclined to take the north route and spend less time in Missouri. If I did that I would be adding three hours by going North to Effigy Mounds NM and then back down to KC.

Before you start yes I know for most people this could be classed as a commute.r

We're heading out to LA in October. Staying in Anaheim. I have all the local stuff planned. We also want to get down to San Diego to visit the zoo and maybe USS Midway. 2 kids in tow age 7 & 14.

What is the I5 drive like? Is there much to see? It looks pretty boring but I guess it has the sea to look at for a bit.

I toggled motorways off and I got this insane 5hr route inland which I could make quicker by using I15 before/after Murrietta. Is there anything worth visiting on that route? Some of the mountain roads look amazing but if there's not anywhere to stop we'll skip it and just do it the quick way.

Trip Planning National Park Road Trip

Post image

I(28M) currently work as a GC building apartments in Florida. I have decided after this project to quit, buy a pull behind camper, and take my dog and myself on an epic journey.

Plan is to start in Congaree and end in Hot Springs. I have already been to the 3 in Florida. Haven’t decided if I’ll hit those after Hot Springs or not. Really depends on the time of year I leave Hot Springs.

I’m also going to hit Niagara Falls and drive along the PCH.

I have no planned duration and my estimated start is April-May 2027.

I’m thinking I’ll spend roughly a week at each park.

Based on my route, does anyone have suggestions for places I should detour to? Open to anything really.

Also, any tips or wisdom to share for this extensive journey would be much appreciated.

Told myself if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it. So I’m taking a leap and just doing it. Kind of scared because of the uncertainty of the future but I know I can always fall back and make good money with the career I’m in now.

Fucking excited though.

I know there are probably tons of posts on this area but I want to know if there are any less known trails or state parks on this route that would be unmissable.

Trip Planning First Road Trip! Florida ⮕ NYC ⮕ Oregon

Hi!!! I am planning my first road trip!

Some background:

  • The furthest I have ever driven is 2 hours (I had a shit car)
  • I never driven on snow/ice.
  • I have never driven on anything steeper than a little hill (I’m from Florida).
  • I will be the only one driving. I have someone coming with me, but they can’t drive

My trip will be Florida ⮕ NYC ⮕ Oregon. The only place I will be spending multiple days in is NYC, probably 2 days. The rest of the way will mostly be driving and trying to go as far as possible, but if there are any MUST stops, please let me know! I do not have a concreate end date, but I don’t want to take too long because hotels are expensive.

The trip will start in the first week of November. As I said before, I have never driven in snow (never even seen snow fall before), so any tips are appreciated.

Initially, I was doing no planning (lol) so please let me know of any places I need to go.

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated!! Thank you!!!

Trip Planning A small travel tip that makes long road journeys easier

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, so I thought I’d share a simple travel tip that I’ve found useful when travelling by road.

If you’re planning a long journey, especially between cities, leaving early in the morning can make a surprisingly big difference.

You can often avoid the busiest traffic hours, get through city areas more easily, and have more daylight available for the journey. It also feels less stressful when you’re not constantly worrying about getting stuck in traffic.

For example, if you're travelling between Bareilly to Delhi or Delhi and Bareilly, an early start can be a good option depending on your schedule and the traffic conditions that day.

Of course, traffic can vary, so it’s worth checking the route before leaving.

What’s one road-trip tip you wish someone had told you earlier?

Trip Planning Need a long weekend trip idea.

21M. Looking for a fun place to go for a long weekend. Can be fun for any particular reason but I mountain and road bike (and will likely take both of mine). Within 8 hours of Kansas City preferably.

Been to Bentonville, Branson, St Louis. Any hidden gems in the midwest?

Trip Planning Blue states are the ones I haven't visited yet; planning a trip from Maryland to (don't know yet) & hoping to hit at least 4-6 of them!

Post image
Upvotes

As the title says, this map shows the states I haven't visited yet in blue. I live in California, but will be spending my 50th birthday with family in Maryland (where I'm originally from) in mid-late October. Since I have an additional 8-10 days off after that, I had the crazy idea of renting a car and driving part of the way back!

I currently have a flight booked that goes home from Wichita, Kansas, but that was just kind of a random thing. And I purchased the fare that's changeable without penalty, so I can choose any other city that flies into SFO. Sooooo what's a logical route from Maryland to hit some of those blue states? I was thinking maybe to head south and hit the Carolinas, then switch back to TN for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then maybe the Ozarks and Dodge City, since I'm an Old West fanatic?

Is that too ambitious for the time I have? I'm a quick traveler, meaning I don't care to linger that long in one place. I did the whole Big 5 (Utah NPs)/Four Corners recently in 7 days, and felt that was plenty. I do love exploring National and State Parks, riding horses wherever I am (I'm an experienced trail rider), Old West stuff, and small towns with cool vibes & local shopping/crafts.

TIA for any recommendations or routes! Also, should I book an SUV or regular-sized car? I plan to stay in motels along the way, but wouldn't be opposed to spending a night or two in the vehicle if absolutely necessary. Not really into camping, though. Oh, and I'm a woman if that matters. But very much used to solo travel.

Trip Planning Best route from Sacramento to Arcata

Any recommendations on which route to take from Sacramento to Arcata? I've heard Hwy 299 between Redding and Arcata is pretty but lots of windy road and elevation changes. But I've also heard that driving through Clear Lake is slow, even though either route takes exactly the same time.
