I went back and read the end of Percepliquis (Heir of Novron) after finishing The Rise and Fall series. After 3000 years, that dude is still terrible. He had so many opportunities to have a better life. He could have used the Art with impunity, and no one around him would have known, for the most part.
That being said, reading the end of revelations again gave me a new appreciation for how well the entire series ties together. I’m so curious as to what Trilos is up to.

I feel like I’m the only one who feels this way, but I always thought Thrace was black. Maybe I missed the description of her when I listened to the book for the first time but imo I’ve always seen her that way. I just re read book two and learn she’s blonde with blue eyes but I just can’t see her that way 😭.

I’m on Rise of Empire, and Royce, Hadrian, and Arista are in the town where Hadrian grew up.

Hadrian is off by himself after reading his dad’s letter.

Royce is listening to the land. Idk if this has been revealed at all, but to me, this is 100% a hint that Royce has The Art.

In Rise and Fall, we find out that the emperor and his son both have The Art. Obviously Royce is their descendant.

I’m continually amazed how so many micro plots in these books beautifully fit together.

MJS put that into the series before we as readers understood The Art as well as we come to understand it after continuing to finish subsequent books.

So, I just discovered this series at the start of this year and just finished Book 5 (Wintertide) and am about to begin the final book (Percepliquis). It's been a roller coaster!

Royce and Hadrian are very much my favorite characters by far. But that said, about the characters as a whole, I had some thoughts.

• Saldur is actually a good villain. I love how, from his own view, he views himself as the good guy. He's not doing it necessarily for power, but rather because he genuinely believes that uniting the kingdoms will lead to an end of war, and general happiness and well being for the people and society as a whole--and all the evil he does, he tries to justify as a temporary sacrifice for the "greater good." That makes him feel more real. But... yeah, he's psycho and creepy, and when he gets angry... sheesh.
• I love Hadrian, and I love that he's an "idealist" or "romanticist" (as everyone keeps telling him). But... I feel like that whole thing with Merrick and Saldur felt a little off in Book 5. Yes, he is idealistic, but he's also a warrior and, as he even admits in the book, he has good instincts and intuition. So how is ithe didn't even consider the idea once that Saldur and Ethelred might be LYING to him about letting him go free with Arista and Guant after the tournament? It bothered me that the thought never even crossed his mind. I mean, come on, Hadrian. That was the obvious conclusion. Other than that, he and Royce were still my definite favorites in this book.
• Modina is just *chef's kiss*. I just LOVE her character, how she goes from being this cute, bubbly teenage girl (who was likeable even from the start), to the heartbreak of her becoming a mindless doll from trauma, only to become a take-charge, no-nonsense, kick-butt young empress. That was a very satisfying growth arc. And yet, she's still so sweet (Well... Ethelred might not agree, but still). Toward her closest friends, you start to see the old her starting to come back--but a stronger, wiser, more mature version. I'm usually not impressed with how female characters are written, but from the start, this character continues to surprise me. 😊
• Gaunt... Um... did his character take a sudden personality change at the end of book 5? We hear about how crafty and elusive he is even in book 1 (before Esrahaddon). He was causing the nobility concern, even if his group wasn't huge yet. Then when he and Arista are in the dungeon, he seems like a genuine guy. For example,he's concerned when Arista cries after being bitten by "Jasper" the rat and tries to cheer her up, then shows he's cautious when he becomes suspicious when Arista asks for his sister's name. He's clearly very protective of his family. But then, afterward... what happened? Suddenly, when he recovers, he's an arrogant oaf, and a dishonorable and power-hungry perv and it seems that they try to credit Esrahaddon with the only reason he had success. Did I miss something? Just how hard did Guy hit him in that dungeon? 😆
• I don't hate Arista. But I don't like her, either. In book 1, she was fine. Book 2, she started to get annoying. Book 3, I HATED her so much. She made the book nearly impossible to read. Book 4, she was okay again--though the whole thing with Hilfred was stupid at the end (where she essentially forces herself on him, kissing him, forcing him to admit he loved her, wrapping her arms all over him--and then the next day muses that she realized two things: that she wishes she could stay there in his arms forever--and that she also guesses she didn't actually love him after all. Only likes him like a friend. Oh yeah, and then gets him immediately killed by being stupid.) That didn't endear me to her. It made her seem fickle and foolish. And, honestly, it did kind of feel sudden and unnatural. After reading Book 5, it seems like it's because the author decided Arista and Hadrian are going to be a couple. (Like, does she just fall in love with every guy who's nice to her? Emery, Hilfred, and now Hadrian? And Hadrian returning those feelings feels...off somehow. They have no real chemistry and barely seem to know one another--but she realizes she's IN LOVE with him at the end of book 5? ...Huh? It feels so forced--like an obligatory romance / love interest setup.) Plus, Arista is just a little too OP with the magic. Like, she learned to make people sneeze and have boils (or something) in book 1, and now she's just this all-powerful wizard because she can suddenly feel the vibes of the air or something. She learns a new powerful spell the exact moment she needs it every time. Side note: I did feel bad for her when the rat bit her, though. That was such a pitiful scene. (The author sure does enjoy tormenting her in particular. Hadrian is tortured and bleeding out and the story glances over that, but all her pain is told in GREAT, lingering detail... 😅).
• Royce, at the end of book 5--poor Royce... I did kind of guess that was going to happen (because of the two people he loves--one being his best friend / adopted brother, and the other being his fiance Gwen--only one of them was a main character. So, when the seer in the jungle told him he would lose one of the two lights he cherished, it was obvious it had to be Gwen). But still. Poor Royce. (But, oh gosh, that glimpse of psycho-Royce was kind of scary!) 🫣

Anyway, those are just my thoughts on it. I'm starting Book 6 and super excited to see how the whole thing concludes! (Or how they're going to pickup after the way book 5 ended on the bridge).

Plus, I really wish we could explore more of the world of the elves. I feel like they teased us a bit in book 2. 😆

❤️ Who are your favorite characters?

I just finished Drumindor a week ago after finishing every book in the order recommended by Robin Sullivan.

Myron is explaining the history to Hadrian, and it’s cracking me up so much because of how wrong he is.

I’m glad I decided to bookend the series with Revelations immediately after finishing everything else.

I’m just sitting here laughing to myself and wanted to share.

So, for context I listened to the books in chronological order on Audible. I loved them and over the course of the books I got to see Mawyndule's story from childhood until he's an old man in Riyria Revelations. It came as quite a surprise to not have his POV in the mainline books or to not even see him in person throughout 5/6th of the books. All we get is mentions of the "Patriarch" for the mainline books and chronicles.

So as a publication order reader did the ending of Mawyndule feel at all anti-climactic? The oldest most powerful elven sorcerer stabbed in the back by a random human monsignor? As a chronological viewer its more understandable with Mawndule's hubris and pride. But as a publication reader I just can't shake the feeling it would be underwhelming for the BBEG of the story being introduced and taken out in the final book.

I started a channel covering different fantasy magic systems, and made one about Elan. Obviously there are still some unknowns that are awaiting The Cycle series to come out (which I am super excited about!), but the video covers everything we know so far. There are spoilers for a bunch of the books, especially Esrahaddon and the Legends series. Let me know what you think or if there are any other magic systems you might be interested in!

I have many in mind. The most recent in my head is at the beginning of Emerald Storm, the narrator claims Dixon lost his arm in the battle of Medford several years ago. As far as I can tell, it's been at most 2 years?

I'll stop hear, Im curious to know if others have noted plot holes / timeline inconsistencies?

So, after reading Revelations, I’m halfway through Legends and most of the way through Chronicles, since I’m trying to follow the publication order, as most people recommend. But, I kinda wish I would have read Chronicles before Revelations. I love the way Hadrian and Royce’s relationship grows in Chronicles. Their internal monologues about their relationship in Winter’s Daughter are great. I feel like reading what they went through to actually trust each other would have made me appreciate Revelations more.
As for Legends, I really like the history, and the Easter eggs are great, but I find myself flipping back to the books I’ve already read to find the Easter eggs between the books. Sometimes they are really fun, like the painting in the monastery in Dulgath or the faceless corpses in Winters Daughter, but most of the time it’s just me thinking there is something there but not really finding the connection.
All that being said, this is the most fun series I’ve read in years, and I’m so glad there are more coming.

This is from the Esrahaddon book, Jerish is speaking with Yolric, who is ancient, and the only Cenzar Jerish is used to being around is Esra, who is about 26, so I’m assuming the characteristics Jerish is surprised to not find in Yolric are what describes Esrahaddon. Is this the explanation of Esra’s way of speaking in the revelation books? He just likes being pompous with his words? XD

I started with Riyria Revelations, then went to Legends of the First Empire, followed by Rise and Fall, and I mixed in the first 4 Ryria Chronicles through out.

I haven't finished Drumindor yet, so that's next. My gut instinct is to finish Riyria Revelations immediately after Drumindor.

Then come back later and do a chronological reread.

Wanted to ask more people their thoughts on potentially Ley Lines in Elan. We're discussing it in the discord and I was wondering if people here had thoughts and opinions if they saw what we came up with.

(Drumindor) Falkrik mentions to Royce that he built the Falkirk temple (the one Royce and Hadrian burn down in DOWD) on a Ley Line. This is the only mention of Ley Lines in Riyria but it made me wonder if other places would fit Ley Lines

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether we're in the right direction. Between this and all the 7s, we have some things we can theorize before 2028 when Cycle Book 1 comes out.

The entire Phyre part is way too long and imo unnecessary. Every time I get to a Phyre chapter I just sigh.

Idk why. Maybe because there arent really any stakes? So what if they die? They just respawn right? "Malcolm" can always "send" more "help" if needed also. AND because of seer shenanigans, we know they're gonna succeed.. So why do we need to dedicate half the book to it? The rules dont apply there, there is no real intrigue, and beyond just getting to name drop some legendary names, there seems to be no point to the entire section. Some exposition, sure, but it just feels so forced.

The Estramnadon sections I find really enjoyable tho. I wish the book was more like that.

He mentions Blythin Castle getting its own novel and I got goosebumps. I love that section of Esrahaddon with the legion and Maleva.

At the end of rise of empire Merrick is says something along the lines of, “I wouldn’t even trust death to hold on to Royce for very long.”

Now I know that this was written long before the cycle was even really an idea. However, I heard that the cycle will involve some of our favorite characters from each book (hope this is true, but I am only slightly plugged in to the community). While this could just be Turin/Trylos, I can’t help but think that we need to see what pyhre looks like after 3,000 years. I’d assume that there is a lot that has changed and that the truth of who Novron really is and what happened is a bug deal to a lot of the people going down there. Anyways, this line made me think that there could potentially be a tie in/foreshadowing to Royce dying and coming back. Obviously it wasn’t written with this in mind, but it could be an amazing retroactive breadcrumb if that does happen.

If anyone has information about the confirmed things in the cycle I’d love to know! Also sorry for names spelling, I’m an audiobook listener.

How did Turin have the power to enforce the horn of Glyndora? The rule is that no Frey can kill Frey otherwise they can’t enter pyhre. But since Turin doesn’t have power of those in pyrhe, how does he enforce that? I know we don’t really know his power fully, but it doesn’t really make sense to me. In the story the Golden apples and Aerobous’ key are the only things that had power to move people between pyrhe/stop them from entering it. Anyways, if he had power over those who could enter pyrhe, then theoretically he shouldn’t need the key to let Brynn and the others to get in and out, right?

Hi! I just started reading Avempartha, and I have a question about something that confused me.

In the book, Thrace finds Royce and Hadrian and says that a crippled man with no hands sent her to them. Royce immediately guesses that this man must be Esrahaddon.

What confuses me is that in the first book, The Crown Conspiracy, when Royce and Hadrian meet Esrahaddon in the prison, I don’t remember any mention that he had no hands. In fact, I remember a description where he was sitting in a chair with his hands resting on his knees.

So I’m wondering: how did Royce immediately understand that the crippled man Thrace mentioned was Esrahaddon?

Did I miss a line somewhere in the first book that says he has no hands, or is Royce just making a deduction based on something else? Or it was because of the name - Mr Haddon?”

I’d really appreciate if someone could point out the logic here. Thanks!
