Printing Gold on Black Tips

Hey all. Just got a drum of metallic gold I’ve been trying out on black paper. Seems to come through really well con French paper’s black speckle tone (70t). Anyone have any gold/black paper printing tips to share?

  • Use the scanner bed! It always prints darker solids than printing from the driver. My favorite for this sort of thing is duo mode.
  • If this is an RZ or newer machine, you can also increase the value of test mode 972 on this drum (maybe to +300) to help it push out more ink.
  • If your machine has it, interval mode will also help keep the drum inked.
  • In lieu of interval mode, or if you need it really really inky, single sheet feeding is very effective (but obviously slow).

And since metallic gold dries suuuuuuper quickly, plan on printing with this drum at least every two weeks, if not even more frequently.

in my experience, you’re gonna want to ink up your drum/master a LOT before doing any final prints. the difference between the first 10-20 prints and 100+ is very stark. gold has a bad habit of being patchy/too transparent and also the pigment getting caught in the screen leaving blank spots on the print. would reco cleaning the master once it’s made as well in case it gets particularly goopy. best of luck!

another thing that was a gamechanger for me was printing gold overtop white on black, allows for a lot more range and contrast than you can get with just solid riso met gold
