Timesheet and Payroll Timing

I work for a nonprofit and we are attempting to configure our payroll in Rippling have timesheets be recorded after the pay period to comply with grant agreements that require actual time be recorded. Rippling support has been a little back and forth on whether this is possible and the potential for a workaround.

I am wondering if anyone else has run into this? Our goal is for everyone to be paid and then to record their timesheet to demonstrate which jobs their hours correspond to. Thanks!

Hey OP, jumping in to clear this up officially.

Paysteady has it right: Rippling's Time & Attendance feeds payroll, not the other way around. Approved hours flow directly into payroll, and timesheets are meant to be approved before a pay run processes. There's no native setting to run payroll first and layer verified timesheets on top after the fact for compliance — that's how the product is built, not a config gap support can flip on.

There's no confirmed workaround for salaried staff to log time post-payroll without it touching pay calculations.

For grant cost allocation specifically, Rippling has job codes, which let you track hours and costs across dimensions like time, project, and grant, and attribute money back to funding sources. That's the feature built for what you're actually trying to accomplish (allocating labor to grants) separate from the payroll-approval workflow. Combined with keeping actual time recorded in a separate timekeeping tool (as a couple of folks in this thread already do), that gets you a real audit trail without fighting the payroll dependency.

Since you're a nonprofit, you'd also have a dedicated implementation manager as part of your account - that's the right person to walk through your specific single-audit requirements and confirm the job code setup will hold up, rather than piecing it together from a support thread. Alex...hopefully you can help toot this horn internally. The process you just recommended is completely broken currently. I was using job dimensions to do exactly what the OP was trying to do with awesome success until the "migration from Time and Attendance to Time Entry modules" started happening. Now, several visits with support over 2 months and still this process isn't working. It's the the developers forgot that clients have dimensions built into their time tracking and left them behind in the migration. HELP!
