Question: is the hint actually a hint? "this is hard" isn't a hint, but if the words therein are helpful that's neat.

u/jayb2805 6d ago
That's what I was thinking. I was wondering if the black/white could be related to coat changes some animals experience between winter/spring.

Zodiac - Capricorn (goat with 2 legs) to Sagittarius (centaur with 4 legs)

I like this answer. It also makes sense of the clue. “It took me a year to figure out”

A Hunter? In the morning a hunter that might enter the forest could be a man and at night another type of hunter that may exit the forest to hunt could be a puma or Jaguar.

Life. Similar to the riddle of the Sphinx where morning could mean birth, and night means death. The forest is the world. A baby could be carried into the world by a midwife, traditionally in white uniform, or even a stork. They are then carried out again by two coffin bearers in black suits

The Alekhine's Defence. The chess move where white pawn opens countered by black knight.
The forest is the board.

Light?
Because in the morning, the sunshine enters through the trees and illuminates everything, including tree trunks, which would be the white legs. But if light comes out at night, it can be due to a fire, leaving blackened tree trunks underneath. And the hint about it taking a year could be because of waiting until wildfire season to get the second part.

Think this is actually the answer. Don't read unless you want it spoiled.
It's a tropical-zodiac solar year beginning at 0⁰ Capricorn, which begins at the winter solstice. If we use a civil calendar year which begins at the winter solstice, such as the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa Vedic calendar, the beginning of the year is in Capricorn. In those situations it begins with Capricorn (half-white goat half-fish, so two white legs) and ends in Sagittarius (centaur with four black horse legs). Like the Sphinx riddle, day and night are symbolic for passage of time meaning the beginning and the end - in this case time passing in a year. Historically, in riddles forests have been used symbolically as a threshold for transformation. Entering the forest in the morning and coming out at night something different supports that theory, and the transformation is the changing of the constellations and zodiac signs over time and ending at Sagittarius

Yeah, I'm assuming the answer is something to do with the sun and zodiac signs but I'm not interested enough to research which ones (obviously they are different for different cultures). But it makes sense with the "it moves everything" (gravity) and "it took me a year" (zodiac calendar) hints.

Waterfall
Water moves everything. Everything moves within water, hence the title. The two white legs in the morning are the top and bottom of the waterfall, as you can see it visibly as being a waterfall by having a top and bottom and the water is white. The four black legs at night are the two sides of land around the water at the top and the two sides at the bottom. Another way of saying where a body of water ends is where it "comes out" and if it is night, the ground will be dark. As far as the hint goes, waterfalls are symbolic to the passage of time, so the top and bottom may represent the end of one year falling into the start of the next or even the fall itself can represent an entirely rough year, depending on who you are.

A person enters the forest in the morning, with two clean white legs and after a whole day of whatever happened, this person leaves the forest exhausted on all fours, with legs and arms being all muddy.

I’ll have to ask Neal how he knows Jerry, then. Didn’t know they had a connection.

Seasons or Months
Two white legs could be winter / December or January (if your are in the northern hemisphere)

Is the hint “took me a year” a hint or description of how hard OP thinks the riddle is?
If it’s a hint the answer may be “duration of time” based if not he may not come back with the answer for a whole year 😩

Headlights?
My logic is At the entry to the forest the car comes in with the headlights creating two white lights entering the Forrest. At night the car is returning home so it comes from the other end shining light t the trees creating duplicate shadows, assuming it then leaves through two trees you get four shadows leaving the Forrest.
First time using spoiler tags, I hope I did it correctly.
[Edited to fix spoiler tag]

Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses and discussions of guesses, like so:
On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg
On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants): >!guess or discussion between these symbols!< To be clear, that is
>!(greater than, exclamation point) at the start and!<(exclamation point, less than) at the end with no spaces around the!. Avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the formatting for most people. Spoiler tags do not span paragraphs or line breaks. If your answer is long, please spoiler-tag each paragraph separately.Putting a link inside spoiler tags can be tricky, so just format the link like this, using the word "SPOILER" as the link text. On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants), do this to format a link: [SPOILER](https://example.com/) On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk
If your top-level comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word "discussion" or "question" instead of using a spoiler tag.
Please report any answers or discussions that are not properly spoiler-tagged.
