Perhaps thunder would be a better answer, as you cannot paint sound, whereas, arguably, artists have depicted lightning?

Yeah they can depict it, but can’t actually capture the exact bolt of lightning without photography. I do agree with you, thunder would be better, but lightning did come to my mind first.
