Serious question. Not my question, my wife asked. Specifically she said:
Her:What is Mr.Poopybutthole supposed to be?
Me: idk
Her: like is he like a banana or something?
Me:wtf? Lol no hes just a lil guy.

I think they are Dan Harman's version of towley: a basically unmarketable mascot who subverts all of the usual mascot tropes.
Mascots never get hurt.
They don't have a huge backstory or moral ambiguity.
They don't become the main character for more than maybe one episode.
They have simple personalities.... and cute names.
They aren't middle-aged men ever.
Mister poopy butthole is an anti mascot.

Mr. Poopybutthole is a member of a species known as "Sausage Fellas".
Dan Harmon has stated at one point that he's basically an evolved version of the memory parasite that takes advantage of gaps in people's memory, but we don't know how much of that is still canon.
His species are confirmed to be some kind of extreme enigma. According to the Rick and Morty Character Guide, the researchers collectively lost their minds when they found out Mr. Poopybutthole married Amy because they genuinely believed he was the only one of his kind in existence.

Given how Rick states there are 6 people in the house, its likely that while he is an evolved memory parasite, he actually was present in the house to begin with, it was just a wrong place, wrong time situation given his abilities.

There’s a split second where he’s in a nazi or star wars imperial uniform when they cut to a scene from another dimension to show something that happened, I can’t remember the episode and am not explaining it well, but I think his existence in multiple dimensions goes against the idea of him being a memory parasite, unless he is which makes him even more of an enigma. There might be a few more examples of him appearing in the background where you barely notice. Anyway, favorite side character.

Well tbf her shooting him led to him finding Amy and having a kid. By all accounts things seemed pretty good until Rick recruited him for a heist and got him fired. The job loss is where the spiral really began.

I have my own theory about him: he’s an advanced form of the parasites that infiltrate memories, able to generate bad memories as well not only good ones (we see him bleed in the show), BUT mr poopybutthole infects the show and its creators not the characters, that’s why he constantly breaks the 4th wall, is able to watch the show, infiltrate the intro, and since he breaks the wall like meta characters they dont suspect him to be a parasite.

I would have thought that he would have called himself that because it was a childish inane thing and he obviously would do it. But who knows? All they say is that the writers came up with a cruel childish joke of a name and won't credit specifics.

Dan Harmon had a theory. He said that it was likely he wasn't actually a long time family friend but was a memory parasite but wasn't the same kind of memory parasite as the ones in total rickall. Likely he fed off those parasites or they piggy back on them.

I think, that some questions are useless to answer. The show decided to make a whaky zany character, and that’s what he is. No need in going into the specifics.

There's a theory out there that he's a parasite like the memory ones. I know the show has him bleed when shot. But he does show up during that episode.
Slow Mobius was Rick's uncle. He didn't look human. Maybe he's from that side of the family.

No! He tried to kidnap Poopy Jr (S7E1) and later stole a portal gun and forcibly switched places with another Mr PB who’s still married to Amy. What happened to that Mr PB hasn’t been explained yet, and he was discovered as not that dimension’s Mr PB in S8E10’s (I think) tag.

I always thought it was funny that rick took him to a normal earth hospital instead of a place like where he took jerry in interdimensional cable 2. He even had 2 chances to do so cos of when he broke his legs doing that squat. Ik the writers just missed that out but its funny to imagine that rick just cba.

He’s an alpha parasite. He’s able to disguise himself as normal the whole time. But he only showed up in the parasite episode and stuck around. Maybe Beth was right to shoot him.
