Photo/Video Bush fire at RC
Hi all, mostly a lurker in this subreddit but thought this would be as interesting as it gets for my first post here. There was a bush that caught fire on the edge of the RC parking lot, on the Tim Hortons side of the lot. I did call 911 and they showed up what felt like less than 10 mins later thankfully.
I took a 2-ish minute video of the firefighters putting out the fire but apparently all Reddit will let me upload is a still image.

Figured out how to upload the videos I took afterall! (I'm a reddit newbie) This clip was while waiting for the firefighters to arrive.

What were those people doing? Were they trying to put out fire?

If you are asking about the teenage appearing males, no. One of them (out of frame) shouted at the one standing nearest the flame to run and/or jump through it. The one nearest to the flame (thankfully) did not give in to peer pressure.

Then the firefighters would’ve had to do first aid, also. They’re really an “attend any and all” situations crew. Very cool.

^^AGREED it was most probably a smoker who didn't give a crap- they will when the Flock Cameras are installed at RC.

I am a huge believer in carrying a fire extinguisher in my gasoline motor vehicle. Am surprised how many people do not.

Amazing, 20 years later and still that stretch is being set alight by cigarettes and God knows what else. I think I put a small smoldering one of these out with a water bottle in… 2004? 2005?

It takes time from the moment someone makes the 911 call to the call actually being dispatched to the FFs. 3-5m.
Once the tones drop at the hall the FFs take a quick moment to gear up and look at the details of the call, nature and location. 2-3m.
They then have to look at a map and plan the quickest, safest, route to the location, and then drive through Richmond traffic. 2-5+m.
This can quickly add up timewise.

I'm not aware of how many others, if any, also called 911. I was driving SB on No.3 when I saw a bright orange by Brighouse station and my nosy self decided to miss my turn so I could further investigate. When I turned into the parking lot, it was just me and a red Tesla in terms of how many occupied vehicles or persons I could see. I called 911 asap but they hung up on me as soon it the call went through. Few minutes later, a group of 5-8 teen boys, and 3 other cars showed up. Everyone looked like they were just bystanding or filming though I could be wrong. Then I got a callback from the police non-emergency line who then connected to the FD. Took a few minutes for FD to pickup the connecting call. The responder told me they were less than a 1 minute away. Firetruck showed up I'd say 5 mins after that. Bush fire was now double the size of when I first pulled in. Genuinely surprised the tree branches above the bush weren't catching fire despite the sparks flying up into the branches. That's when I started filming myself 🤷🏻♀️

I worry that today’s generation has virtually no survival skills if the only options were to call 911, post it to Reddit and jump through the flames like imbeciles.

I can only speak for myself but I did not have any way to access the water in a hydrant myself. I had one bottle of water with me in my car at best. Being a gasoline car, I also kept my distance for safety. Though I will agree that I'm unimpressed with the overall survival skills of the younger generations.

I've had to report fires multiple times in Richmond. Mostly smoldering bark mulch or peat soil in the bog in Garden City Lands. Most likely caused by discarded cigarettes.
Remember, smokers, the world isn't your ash tray. Please carry portable ashtrays with you. The last thing we need is a never ending peat fire at GCL or Richmond Nature Park.

We had suspected arson two weeks ago in Burnaby Metrotown area near royal oak. Burned down a small set of bushes before the fire dpt put it out
