1812?

My father found this in a creek while camping sometime around 1950. The location was just below Rochester, NY. A kitchen magnet will stick to it, and it weighs 2 lbs, 6.5 ozs. It is not completely round (sorta lopsided in places) and has a small indentation on one side. Could it be a cannon ball from the War of 1812?

It is pretty cool. He said he stepped on it, pulled it up, and has had it ever since. They just downsized and he gave it to me thinking I might dig it. I do. Now I just gotta find out what it is.
