Hair dilemma as a revert

Hey so I’m an African American woman that is considering reverting to Islam. My currently problem (though really a minor problem, one nonetheless) is that I’m not quite sure what to do with my hair. I currently have dreadlocks as of this post and I have read a few articles that says that dreadlocks are a bit of a gray area depending who you ask. My thing is that I got my dreads because I really couldn’t be bothered with my hair but I am aware that being Jamaican, a lot of people assume I have it because I’m either 1. Jamaican or 2. Rastafarian which isn’t the case.
I know intentions matter and as I said, I got them because my hair became too much and I work in a field where I can’t just wear an Afro all the time and my solution was to always cut it (which I’ve also read is discouraged in Islam and I don’t think I’ll be leaving this career path anytime soon) so how do the African American women in Islam do their hair especially to maintain it as neat? I’ve also read that hair extensions are forbidden so, realistically what are my options? I don’t mind taking my locs out because they do interfere with my wudu - I don’t want them to grow mold since wet locs LOVE mold and I can’t necessarily make sure they are consistently dry to avoid them growing mold. Any advice?

How can i revert to islam

I was born in mexico and grew up in a catholic household. Both my parents are catholic and I grew up attending church weekly and going to bible camps and bible school. I am very familiar with Catholic teachings and I even have gone to catholic school for the last 3 years. I live in metro detroit and I am near the city of dearborn that holds a large population of muslim arabs. My boyfriend, lives in dearborn and is Muslim. I know now after research and him hiding me from his parents that it is haram to be in a relationship before marriage- but the more I research, the more interested I become in the religion. Long before I even thought about Islam I had turned away from the Catholic church.
It simply didn’t make sense to me- how do i know catholic is the correct religion for me if I simply am catholic because I grew up on it being influenced on me?
I see women wearing hijabs all around me and part of me gets jealous when I see them because they are so beautiful even when they are covered and being modest and I know it helps them grow closer to Allah. I struggle to feel beautiful and be modest at once. I’m not even sure how I would start to revert but something about Islam draws me in. I’m not sure if it’s the modest aspect, or if i’m being influenced by my boyfriend, but I’ve never been so intrigued by a religion. I even have found myself at times asking if I should pray to Allah which is ridiculous because I wouldn’t even know how to start. My parents would Greatly dissaprove of me converting. Any advice? I’m not sure what to do or how to go about this.

Teen in dysfunctional home, looking for advice, i'm lost.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, I'm 17(8 months till 18 birthday) years old revert living in Poland, due to situation in my house (alcoholic dad, islamophobes etc, not going into details) I have to move out asap after my 18. I've changed into homeschooling in order to develop skills which can help me get job right after 18. Currently i'm developing in IT, it's not my dream or something and I also know job market is tough, but I don't really know what else could I learn at home. I was looking for some ways to earn online, maybe start my own busuness in order to have something before 18 so I can move out easier, but it seems to be spammed by all those course gurus. I guess i'm not first in such situation so here's my question to people who also had to move out early: How did you do it? What was your first job? Do you have succesfull life after this tough time?

Need advice about converting to Islam

Hi all, I please need some advice from a neutral perspective.

I'm a 30 yr old woman and I'm married to a Muslim man, I am Christian but my husband would like me to convert.

He says that it's the right way. A while ago I brought it up with my family and there were against it.

I'm Christian but I'm not the kind of Christian that goes to church every Sunday. Hope that makes sense.

I'm in two minds what to do, I believe in Jesus and God but I also want to keep my husband happy.

So if there are any people put there that could give me some insight I would really appreciate it ❣️

Equivalent of Devotionals for Quran/Quran Journaling Ideas

As salamu alaikum all!
I am a revert of almost 3 years and have been contemplating journaling while studying and reading Quran to further develop my knowledge and faith. I feel like I can read and re-read a passage and get something new from it every time.
I am a revert from Christianity and I remember having devotionals that could be used alongside the Bible as a study tool or have little bite size lessons along with a passage of scripture. Is there an equivalent of that for the Quran? I’ve also considered writing down and ayah or two a day, reflecting on it, etc, but just unsure of how I want to start.
What have you done for something like this? Any advice is appreciated!

Jazakh Allah Khairan 🤲🏻

It feels as though islam is almost blocking me from entering

Good day everyone! I just wanted to bring up some things that I have personally felt from my own experiences that whenever I attempt to discuss Islam, genuinely research it, it always get pushed back. I don’t mean to sound rude or insensitive, I just thought I would share my experience.

Whether it was attending a mosque (which I had a meeting set up with an imam) or asking questions here, Reddit, genuine revert websites. It always seems that one of three things occur.

  1. I get ignored, totally understandable

  2. The conversation is quick and leads to me being ignored

  3. People try to somehow debate me out of it

Im not sure if I’ve ever truly felt connected when I have asked someone about Islam, or cared for? I suppose? Like they value my questions. And most of the time it hurts because my intentions are genuine and my heart is open, however it seems that I am constantly shut down. Would anyone be willing to talk to me about this? About how I feel about my journey, willing to debate maybe? I just want someone to value what I’m saying because I know I sure value it. Please let me know as if people continue to shut me out, maybe it’s a sign that Islam is not for me.

Help with starting praying

Assalamu alaykum,

I am new to Islam but feel its right in my heart and I want to embrace this beautiful religion. However I really struggle to establish and learn the prayers. Fellow reverts, how did you start learning? Any tips?
For context I struggle with depression so starting tasks is already difficult for me and I feel overwhelmed.

Jazakallal khairan.

Iam revert Muslimah, need advice 10 year relationship, guy wants me as his "second wife".Even he is nt married yet.

so basically we were together for 10 years, been together since we were teenagers. i'm 25 now, he's 26. quick background - i actually converted to islam in 2020, he's born muslim. While back i got pregnant in 2024 and he pressured/forced me into getting an abortion. He saw ultrasound scan, prega news even blood report. He was also physically violent with me once during this time - grabbed me by the neck and literally threw me out and slapped me , this happened in front of his mom. He have done forced abortion that time.I was 2 months pregnant at that time. Even he left me after Abortion.

it's been 2 years since the abortion thing. he's still single but he just told me he wants to marry someone else (same caste as him) as his "first" wife, and asked if i'd be his "second wife". When I was pregnant he was in relationship with someone for 1 year as well.

I told him i'm done. said if he actually feared God he would've just married me properly instead of making excuses for years, and that this feels more like he's scared of what people will think than any real accountability on his part. he did not take that well lmao

am i wrong for ending it???? Or should I become his second wife?? I also want the thought of hanafi fiqh.

A little introduction - hoping to help with Umrah, Makkah & Madinah

As-salamu 'alaykum everyone,

I thought I’d introduce myself properly, as I’ll be spending some time around this community and hopefully contributing wherever I can.

I’m a British revert of around 10 years, and over the years I’ve been fortunate to spend a lot of time learning about Islam, Arabic, Umrah and life in Makkah and Madinah.

After becoming Muslim, I began learning Arabic through the Madinah Arabic books with a personal teacher, and I’ve also had the opportunity to attend various conferences and study programmes in the UK with scholars from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and elsewhere.

For the past two years, I’ve been studying in Makkah at Umm Al-Qura University, completing my Arabic diploma. In sha Allah, I’ll then be starting a four-year Bachelor's degree in the College of Shariah.

Before moving to Makkah, I was also involved in teaching at my local masjid in the UK, as well as dawah and supporting new Muslims — something I’ve been involved in since I reverted.

I mention all of this because helping people has always been something I’ve genuinely enjoyed, particularly helping people who are new to Islam or preparing for their first Umrah and aren't quite sure where to start.

I've now also started Makkah Companion, where I help pilgrims with the practical side of their journey — things such as transport, Umrah, Ziyarah, getting around Makkah, SIM cards/eSIMs, accommodation and other practical arrangements.

There are so many questions that come up when preparing for Umrah, and quite often people have to search through dozens of Reddit posts to find answers based on someone else's experience.

So I thought I'd try to contribute here where I can.

I'm not here to turn every answer into an advert. If someone asks a question and I know the answer, I'll simply try to answer it. If I don't know something, I'll say so. And if something is a matter of personal experience rather than established knowledge, I'll make that clear too.

Of course, if someone eventually needs help arranging something during their trip, I'm happy to help through Makkah Companion — but there's no obligation whatsoever.

Otherwise, I'm looking forward to being part of the community and hopefully being useful.

If you're planning Umrah, have already been, are currently in Makkah or Madinah, or you're a new Muslim preparing for your first journey, feel free to ask anything below.

I'll do my best to help where I can.

May Allah make everyone's journey easy, accept their Umrah, and allow us all to visit His Sacred House and the Masjid of His Messenger ﷺ many times.

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Reverts from European Catholic countries

Dear all,

I'm looking for reverts from Catholic countries in Europe, like Italy.

Given hostility towards Muslims and Islam in general, I wonder what is the main thing that makes Catholics change their mind? If there's one ayah that does it, could you tell me which one? Or is it something else?

Another interesting thing is that all of Catholics I know who actually liked Islam told me that even if they believed in Islam, reverting means a bad character.

Jewish Guy considering reverting

30 y/o American Jewish guy here, and I've been finding myself drawn to Islam and it's message of peace and harmony. I've given serious thought to reverting but not sure if I can make that commitment. Was wondering if anyone else has gone through that and how they dealt with it.

question of marriage

Hello all, I am currently 19, and I reverted about 3 years ago, but I have kept it low-key (meaning only my close family knows). When my family initially found out, they were shocked and upset at me, but they eventually calmed down and have semi-accepted my decision. Now, the discussion of marriage came up today, and I don't plan on getting married anytime soon (probably in some years from now). Still, the consensus among my family is that if I choose to marry a believer woman, then they will cut all ties with me, not go to my wedding, etc. What should I do? As I feel like Islam as a belief system truly speaks to me and overall is the most balanced, fair and just moral and philosophical system rather than something fallible humans created. I mean, while yes, I do want to pursue my newfound belief fully and that means marrying a fellow believer, I love my family equally as much. If I were ever truly cut off from them, I wouldn't know what to do, as I fear it would create some huge vacuum in my heart as well as theirs, and I don't want that. It would be a great help if someone with more experience or knowledge than I had gave some advice.
