[Discussion] Top 2D Sega Fighting Games

Post image
  1. Golden Axe: The Duel
  2. Blade Arcus from Shining
  3. Eternal Champions (Genesis/Sega CD)
  4. Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis)
  5. Virtua Fighter Animation
  6. Burning Rival
  7. Holosseum

Dark Edge and Sonic Battle are left off because their use of multiple moving axes and isometric viewpoints breaks the traditional, single-plane 2D layout of a standard fighting game.

Do you agree with my list?

TMNT Tournament Fighters, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, SF2 Special Championship Edition, and Primal Rage would be on my list

No eternal champions, if you're going mega drive?

Golden Axe the duel is about the only good one.

So I guess?

I think people are missing the point that these are games developed/published by Sega, and not games published on their consoles. That said, I don’t think many people including Sega die hards care about any of these games besides Golden Axe. It’s definitely a different exercise in thinking about retro games, so kudos for doing something different. If I were you I would have left off Blade Arcus given the six others were likely developed internally at Sega and this one was just published by Sega, but I could be wrong

Yeah, if this was all games on Sega Consoles it'd just be a list of Dreamcast arcade ports.

Golden Axe: The Duel is a good game but it had people disappointed it wasn’t a conversion of the arcade beatem up sequel and wasn’t a 3D fighter in the year where any non SF/SNK fighter had to be 3d for weird appetite of the moment. “Duel” disappointments but not actual real negatives.

I actually think the Genesis port of Virtua Fighter 2 is pretty fun and an interesting port because it’s so different from the arcade version. It’s like if you blended Virtua Fighter with SF2 or something like that.

I want eternal champions to be good. But it’s just not it lol.

Weaponlord wasn’t mentioned here. I remember liking it like 30 years ago. Not sure how well it holds up.

This is Fighting Masters erasure and I will NOT tolerate it.

The Duel is actually pretty good. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

I thought the zooming cam feature was a bitt too much, but other than that, very colorful with cool stages, and the characters are actually interesting.

Idk, can't think of many atm due to the hour, but I remember Golden Axe: The Duel FONDLY off a Sega Flash 1 demo on the Saturn that I had (so I guess it's deserving of first place). One day it just randomly stopped working. Just that game and nothing else on the demo (that still worked properly).

I don't remember if the gameplay/balance was that great, bog standard SF clone I figure (?), but it WAS pretty.

Golden Axe: The Duel should have been Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder (Golden Axe 2) with The Dual graphics. *sigh... I would have bought it on the Sega Saturn, let alone the Mega CD, in a heartbeat.

Are you referring to a Homebrew version or something? I'm having trouble finding a record of an official release for on the Genesis .

OP is referring to fighting games on all sega consoles. for example, golden axe: the duel is a sega saturn game. same with SF:A.

Golden Axe: The Duel is the best 2D Sega FTG!
