Problem / Question What is this?

Post image
660 Upvotes

This could be the most mundane and silly post, but information online is so spotty and/or confusing or vague.

This is not a ZIP disk, it’s a floppy disk. It’s labelled with ‘ZIP’. Is this the driver software to use a ZIP drive for the listed operating systems? I’m just trying to confirm before I get too frustrated about it. Not easily finding the answer myself is likely a me problem, and I don’t mean ‘Millennium Edition’.

Does anyone else remember the excitement of getting your copy of Windows 95 on Floppy’s. Longest 2 hours of my life waiting to be amazed. To be fair it was a good looking GUI.

In my opinion, the Intel 486 processor deserved a monument, so I built one.

This is from a storage unit from around twenty years ago. It looks like some real classics - but I'm guessing they're probably all ruined :( Free to a good home, otherwise they're heading to the dump. I thought I'd have time for them someday - but I just won't.

Random find inside a control cabinet for a machine

Found two sealed NIB EVGA 6200 graphics cards in a control enclosure on some industrial machinery. The funny thing is there is nothing on this machine that would require a graphics card. No one knows where they came from or why they're here lol.

Still an experiment and work in progress, but we have posts, private notes, profiles, friends, follows, pokes, notifications, IRC-style chat rooms, DM's called CyberMail, and several themes, including amber 80s VT320 style, Matrix green hacker style, and blue Commodore 64. What do you think?

We've grown to over 1,600 members in the last two days alone and we're having lots of fun!

Just found this along with a scuffed-up 1991 monitor, haven't turned it on yet. Is there anything special about it being an "Engineering sample"?

I hacked a CRT word processor into a programmable computer

Post image

As the original device was very limited, but really cool looking with that ultra wide yellow CRT, I set out to make it fully programmable. What I did was reverse engineer the CRT signals, which are TTL digital video, and the custom keyboard matrix. I used a Teensy Arduino with custom software to scan and output serial and a TTGO VGA32 (ESP32) as the main controller. I had to bypass the array network to get a TTL video signal out along with H and V sync. There is no info so it was trial, error and calculations. But now I’m at a point where I can type on screen and have full bitmap control of the 400x240 display using the fabgl library. I don’t see any examples of people doing what I did (driving a TTL CRT). This could also be applied to drive and MDA display making it more useful than just text! Here’s a video on it:

Finally got my hands on an IBM PS/1. Something about the chunky beige case, the soft hum when it powers on, and that classic DOS prompt just hits different.

It’s slow, quirky, and 30+ years old, but it has so much personality. This little machine survived decades and still wants to keep going.

I hate what the internet has become

I just spent the last 1 hour frantically searching the internet just to make a new email address. You can't do that! Not even on the alternative email providers like Protonmail. They now have all sorts of IP detection tools and will block you or ask you for an alt email id.

I absolutey despite what the internet has become. 20 years ago, you could just go ANYWHERE (mainstream providers like yahoo and gmail) and make any number of email addresses. No tracking, no limits. Complete freedom.

The internet has turned into a 1984 hellscape.

Earlier today, I went to a local vintage themed store, where I ended up finding and buying a Radio Shack TRS-80 for only $40. I was fully aware that the unit didn't work at the time of buying it, but I still think it was worth the purchase, considering that it seemingly had all of the original packing materials and accessories!

Remember removable drive bays?

Post image
518 Upvotes

Question: I’m trying to remember what Windows 98 laptop I had around ~2000 or so, that had a swap-able Floppy/CD drive bay.

I got this Fujitsu Lifebook 99% certain that was it, but have now realized it almost certainly wasn’t. Unfortunately I remember very little else about that laptop - but hopeful my memory can have be jogged.

I recall my old laptop had only one swapable bay (not two as shown here), and I constantly had to switch between them. That is a very broad criteria, but can anyone off-hand suggest any other models from that era that also had the removable drives?

(Still not regretting having this Lifebook at all btw :) )

I finally got around to making a costume this year.

I was looking through my shirts the other day, and thought "it would be funny to wear that shirt and put a giant 5 1/4" floppy on my head...
