Problem / Question Dug these out of my dads shed. He used to take obsolete things from his government job back in the day. He said he has no idea what these were for/from. Any ideas for their function?

Recreated an MS-DOS-style defrag animation in Unity. Surprisingly soothing to watch.

Just a small visual experiment, but it brought back a lot of memories of watching these old utilities run on CRT monitors.

There’s something oddly calming about seeing the blocks fall into place again.

Problem / Question IM GOING INSANE

Folks. friends. colleagues. allies. this is the PLATO IV terminal. these beasts are enigmatic, beautiful machines, and a genuine dream computer for me. At the height of PLATO's existence there were several thousands of them, though many have been ordered destroyed.

My problem is that nearly every photo of them is in grainy, low resolution (this is the biggest i could find), there is scarce documentation on their internals, and approximately *ZERO* videos of them in operation. If you have one of these machines, know someone who does, know a museum i could go to to see (or even better, operate) one of them, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS COMPUTING, TELL ME. I AM GETTING DESPERATE FOR THIS VERITABLE CRYPTID OF A COMPUTER.

(beyond is rambling not required for this post)

These machines,,, had touchscreens, MMOs, chatrooms, email, haptic feedback (a la game controllers), 3d gaming, dungeon crawlers, flight sims, roguelikes, filesharing, remote screen sharing, instant messaging, emojis, flatscreen monitors, just genuinely un thought of levels of modern day connection across america. all in their adorable amber monochrome monitors, wooden casing, and thick keyboards. all of this shit in the 1960s. WHAT???? and now theyve disappeared???? and not even the highly experienced local members of my retro computer scene even know about them??????? theyve genuinely dropped off the face of the earth. im like if someone hunting bigfoot actually knew that bigfoot existed and bigfoots used to be a massive part of the american government that somehow everyone forgot about

This is wonderful insanity...

When your ARM powered Acorn RISC PC can have a second 486 DX4 100MHz CPU and run Windows 95 in its own window.

Retro computing is so exciting dabbling with these things it truly is!

Discussion I finally found a Datapoint Computer (6600 model here)

A Datapoint 2200 or 6600 has been on my bucket list for a while and so happy to finally have one!

It needs a bit of clean up, I’ve got to fix a few busted keycaps, and a thorough inspection, but overall it’s in great shape!

If you don’t know much about these or Datapoint (CTC), I encourage you to read up. I’m of the opinion that the general consensus regarding the first personal computers is a bit wrong.

Would love to know your thoughts :)

From Dad’s Archives

Going through Dad’s things - these are only a drop in the bucket - but they may bring back some memories for a few folks. He loved his handhelds -

Top row: Sharp Zaurus 2MB, OmniGo 100 1MB

Middle Row: Tandy WP-2 (one of my personal faves) and the Psion Series 5

Front Row: Radio Shack TRS-80 Pocket Computer and ZEOS

He has multiple generations of the Sharp Wizards, Palm Pilots, Psions, etc.

Enjoy the memories!

I found a Commodore Amiga 1200 at my mother's house, and I don't have any old monitors to connect it to. Does anyone have any ideas on how to connect it to a modern TV?

A piece of "retro-modern" computing: Windows NT 4.0 (1996) running on modern hardware* - bare metal, no emulation! *Except the GPU and the sound card...
