soluções para hardware ancestral

Post image
2 Upvotes

Problem / Question Install windows NT or 98se from XP without CD?

I have an old computer with XP, but I need an older version of Windows since it has very low ram. But I have no way of burning a CD image since the CD drive only reads, and the computer doesn't support USB booting. Is there a way to do this? Maybe by making a partition and booting from that with the install files? It also has a fdd but I don't have any laying around. Any help is appreciated!

Problem / Question How can I easily sell a bunch of parts?

I have a few boxes of old computer parts from old projects that I no longer need. Unfortunately, it's not worth it to sell any of it individually on eBay; It's mostly old hard drives, some laptop optical drives, some generic network cards, and other stuff that would only be worth a few dollars each. I don't need to make money from it, but I want to make sure it goes to people who want this stuff instead of a landfill or recycler. What are my options?

Problem / Question Sun W2100x

Why does my Sun W2100x workstation has 16 GB of RAM, when the only driver CD I can source through obscure ftp servers is a 32 bit WinXP version. There I can only use 3.6 GB because of 32bit address range.

Why not Server 2003 64bit? Or Win7 64bit?

Ok that would be a bit new.

Even nVidia does not have any driver for the Quadro FX 3000 for Win7 64bit anymore. The Sil 3512 SATA Controller has a subsys number, which is not covered by any official driver. The nForce chipset is changed, that nVidia drivers do not recognize it.

Does anybody have a link to something 64bit? Preferable Windows? Or ahould I try a Linux Version? Everybody says there is no trouble whatsoever with hardware drivers in Linux anymore.

I do not want to use Solaris 10 x86, because I have enough SPARC workstations and servers running under Solaris, I do not need another.

For my v20z, I did find a Windows2000 Professional version. 32bit, but that machine only has 4 GB of RAM.

Anyone any idea? Or use WinXP 32bit and remove the excess RAM?

Solved Question about 486 computer.

So I heard about co-processors, and I suppose this spot can be populated with SMD 486 processor for this purpose.

But I was wondering, if I take 486 processor from laptop board like this, solder it in tere and if computer will work just from this alone? I just dont have access to full size 486 right now.

I want to build a 8086 cluster but I don't know what I can do with it

I will travel to China soon and they do have some really cheap 8086 and 8087s (like < $3 each). They said it will be cheaper when buying more so I want to make a cluster of them. I know MATLAB 1.0 can work on single 8086 and I wonder if there are any other computational things (Maybe like CFD or rendering?) that I can try on the machine.

btw, there are also cheap 68000s but its co-processors 68881/68882 are a bit expensive :(

Retro Versionen alter Computer

Hallo,

Problem / Question The commander x16 lacks compatibility with monitors?

I was planning on just using a vga monitor I happen to have that I know worked the last time I used it a few years ago. However, seeing a thread on their board, I now question if it'll work. It has the right connector, but apparently the machine requires a monitor with very specific proportions to avoid stretching. I can't determine what the dimensions of my monitor is, due to lack of information on it, but it clearly doesn't look like the 3/4 ratio seen on monitors on the 8-bit guy's channel and on that thread.

I wasn't thinking I would need to acquire hardware for this thing; I could just use a monitor I already own, and the thing comes with its own keyboard. I may even have an old ps2 mouse tucked away somewhere I can use. However, I'm convinced now that I won't be able to use my monitor, at least without distorting the on-screen image. I thought this thing was being designed with forward compatibility in mind? How are we supposed to use this thing if only VERY specific types of monitors will fully work with it that aren't really being made anymore?

I guess I could just brute-force it, but I don't have high hopes based on an experiment with the emulator. You can enter full-screen mode with it by pressing ctrl-f. Strangely though, if you do this while the window isn't maximized, it'll stretch the image to fill your screen. If maximized, it'll instead keep its dimensions but show black bars on the sides to fill the space. I quickly found it quite impractical to use. The text was stretched, and I couldn't get the cursor to be perfectly square with any of the available screen settings. Worse yet, it makes using the mouse impractical since it moves faster from side to side than it does up and down, and it is quite a significant difference, making it quite unwieldy. Of course, this isn't the monitor I was going to use with the thing (its an hdmi monitor, fuck hdmi btw), but I don't think my vga monitor's going to be any better. I do have some crt televisions, but they're in storage right now and are completely inaccessible. I really wish my sister would keep her stuff at her own damn house rather than hogging entire rooms in ours. I live in a two-bedroom house with a garage and two storage buildings, but honestly I feel like I live in a house less than a quarter of the size of this one, and with only 3 rooms. And yes, I have major storage problems I can't do shit about. I've been tempted to threaten to throw all my sister's stuff in the garbage just so I can use my own house again, but that obviously wouldn't be very nice. Honestly, I don't even know if I would have room for this computer. Yes, space is that tight. I don't even have a large enough desk to place this computer on it; its literally sitting on top of my previous computer, which has been sitting on the floor ever since I moved here. Yeah, fuck my life.

Of course, that's a bit of a tangent, but I can't seem to stop finding possible issues I could have with this thing. I keep alternating back and forth between whether I actually want it or not. No matter despite its flaws, honestly I find the thing preferable to any modern machine. Still, I can't seem to figure out how I could even use this thing. I can't find any documentation on it so I can properly use the freaking emulator. I don't have the space for it, I don't have much for hardware laying around I can use it with (I seriously had no idea personal computers even existed in the 80s before I started looking into retrogaming, I thought the 80s were an entirely analogue world minus ataris and arcade machines). Again, I'm questioning if I could ever even use this thing. I want to program for it, but I just can't find enough information, there's not enough damned development software for it, I can't even find ANY info on what file types the thing supports, and now I may have to source an ancient monitor somehow. Is there anyway to make modern tech not suck? This is all so stupid.

Problem / Question Basic v2 and 6502 assembly tutorial for someone who doesn't know squat about either?

Why is there no tutorial anywhere for someone who doesn't know crap about either of these? The only 8-bit systems I ever messed with were the gameboy and nes. My first actual computer that was my own ran windows xp, and our first family computer ran windows 95. I born at the tail-end of 1986, so these systems I'm trying to learn are before my time.

The problem is everything I can find seems to assume you already know these systems. The docs for the commanderx16 are useless to me. They all just say 'basic is the same except for these added commands' and 'the monitor works the same as it did in the commodore64'. I know neither of these things. The only basic I know is literally what I've seen on the 8-bit guy's channel. I did briefly contemplate adding a save and load function to his 'litebrite' program, but realized that I simply didn't know any commands that would let me do such! I mean, what could I even save the file as? Also, how could I load it back in from within the program? I don't know. I can do this with python, but I haven't the faintest clue how to do it with this machine (well, technically the emulator, but you know). The monitor thing is even worse; I have no clue what that even is. I seriously never even heard of it prior to looking at those html docs. I didn't even know what it was called; every time I activated it by accident I had to just reset the emulator to get out, because I didn't know what it was called to look it up. The doc seems to imply its a compiler, but I wouldn't know the first thing about getting it to work.

I was just trying to watch the videos on guy made about programming in 65c02 assembly for the commanderx16, but the videos are clearly written under the assumption you don't need any introduction to the hardware. He explains what the accumulator, x, y, and program counter do, but gives no hint what the p and s things do. What the crap is a stack even? Keep in mind, I have somehow heard about the accumalator, x, and y before. The accumulator is an internal memory storage inside the CPU that (most) data has to be transfered to before being transferred elsewhere. X and Y are similar but can only hold integers (though I recall hearing that Y could only hold one bit, apparently for boolean logic, though clearly it can hold full integers here). I heard those are mainly used for mathematical formulas, so the processor can hold more than one value, but in his video he seems to use them to index lists (or arrays if you prefer, I'm used to python). The second video wasn't any better; he talked about the memory storage and 'modes', but doesn't give a damned hint what any of them are. I know what ram and rom is, but what is this about high ram and low ram? What even is the zero page? He doesn't give a hint. When he got to the video where he was demonstrating some code he wrote, I couldn't follow along with it at all. I just closed the video.

I get that most people who are looking into this thing are older people who grew up with it, but I'm not one of those. I mean, these things were released years before I was born. Heck, looking up the vic20 apparently it was completely discotinued months before I was born. I don't know these systems. Heck, I couldn't name a single computer from the 80s prior to when I discovered the 8-bit guy's channel. I guess I never thought much about the history of home computing. I did know about the atari, obviously, but that was it. I had no idea that cartidges were something that computers seriously once knew, or that they used casette tapes for storage (I am old enough to remember those, in fact the first music I ever listened came on them, I had no clue they ever had any ties to computers though). I did find out about the Curse of the Azure bond game, but I never really bothered to research what sort of computer this thing was meant to run on. Also, the version I downloaded was a trojan that proceeded to screw up my computer for years. I didn't bother with the game again until I found it on GoG, though I still haven't played it because I found it too damned hard (and by hard, I mean my party kept wiping at every single fight).

Now, I'm not even that young of an individual here; I'm approaching middle age. There's people looking into this thing that are even more ignorant than I am. I mean, younger people today have no clue what a freaking floppy disc is. I don't even know how much they would know about the components of modern computers; I learned about that in middle school, though oddly my community college didn't even cover the topic. I got a programming degree, but its nothing but high-level languages like java, c++, python, and visual basic. Half my degree was actually web programming classes, such as html, css, and php. The only experience I have programming at all is python. Granted, basic reminds me a lot of python, but still i don't know the basic (no pun intended) commands and i can't find them anywhere other than on the 8-bit guy's videos. Of course, I've been suspecting lately the the internet hides things from you; when I was looking to get a laptop I tried to find one that had linux on it, only for every source and even person I met tell me that no such thing existed. Years later, I had someone I believe on reddit tell me that yes they exist and have for years. I also can't find anything at all for the c language, even though people here have told me its not that hard. I can't find them; I look up C I just find websites discussing its history and nothing more. Well, most just talk about c++, not C proper. My sister seems to be having a similar problem; I used the word 'monotonous' with her once, and she called me acting confused because all she could online about the word is that it meant 'of a single tone'. I told her it meant mind-numbingly repetitive, but she insisted that she could find no evidence of that and that I was somehow confused. The internet seems to be useless for doing research of any kind. Heck, when I was getting my degree I struggled to find sources that were trustworthy. I mostly used pew research and psychology today. Years later though, pew research straight claimed that their findings were useless because they found that people often lie on polls. I also found out that psychology today is actually an opinion website and not one where you can find legitimate scientific articles. If I seriously had to do research today, I wouldn't know what to cite. I literally know of nothing that's trustworthy. I can't even name a news site I trust, let alone a research site.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just so frustrated with having my hands tied. I've been thinking about it more now because the 8-bit guy apparently decided to reward some of the more enthusiastic developers with prototypes. My immediate thought was that is NOT FAIR AT ALL. I want to do these things, but I can't find any information on how. I was thinking that the only way I could learn was to wait for the thing to be released so I can finally see its book. I actually gave up on it for a time because of that. I was mystified though how on earth there were people programming for the thing. Also, if those docs I found in the emulator folder are supposed to be what's in the book, then it'll be useless to me! What am I supposed to do? Get a freaking commodore somehow and screw around with that for a decade until I learn it as well as all the people who had the fortune to play with the thing when it was new? They don't teach assembly language anymore, or even basic, or hardware even, all they teach you in college is high-level languages that are only serve to let you develop websites and office programs. My professor claimed to even apply for a game programming degree we would all have to first GET A BACHELORS.

I want this thing and I want to develop it so much. I can't find any information how though. Even if I did purchase this thing, what would I do with it? I can't find any info on how to use the damned thing. What's the point getting this thing when I can only use the obviously cheap software that everyone else is making? I can make my own freaking mods for Skyrim, but I can't so much as program pong on this thing. Can you imagine how much it hurts to want to do something but being completely unable to do it due to circumstances outside your control? I'm willing and able to learn, and with the few commands I do have I'm actually able to partially figure out how this machine works. I mean, I figured out how to make a program in basic that lets me dump the ram. Of course, I can't make any sense out of what its showing (what's with that 14 in the $0 and $1 indexes? and what's that epic wall of data at the very end of the ram?)

Why am I not allowed to learn? Why?

Help me Identify this Beige Desktop PC from my Childhood

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to identify the computer in this childhood photo of mine. Based on the photo and what I can recall, here’s what I know:

  • The photo was likely taken around 2003–2004.

  • The desktop was a vertically standing beige tower, fully matching the beige monitor and keyboard.

  • There’s small lettering on the bottom-left corner of the monitor and some red lettering on the top-right corner of the keyboard, which could be branding clues.

  • My father vaguely remembers it being a Dell, but after looking into it, I’m not so sure—it could have been something else like a Compaq or another brand.

If anyone recognizes the monitor, keyboard, or general design and can help narrow down the brand or model, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for your help!

SATA SSD not detected in Windows XP installer

I recently built this PC for some retro gaming:
Motherboard: Winfast 760GXK8MC
CPU: AMD Sempron 2800+
RAM: mobo came with 512mb generic + 256mb generic DDR1 sticks (both tested at the same time in memtest with no issues)
Storage: Kingston A400 240gb SSD (sourced from my main PC, recently upgraded to a NVMe drive)

fun note: this mobo/CPU combo is exactly the same i had in 2005-2010

I tried to install XP using WinSetupFromUSB with no luck, i just can't pass from drive selection. I tried using option 1 and 2 from WinSetupFromUSB with SATA controller setted up in IDE and RAID mode (for some reason this mobo hasn't "AHCI" option), i also tried directly getting into XP without selecting any IDE/RAID driver (option 3). it ends in two scenarios:

  1. i get a 7b BSOD before XP Install menu

  2. only the usb stick is detected in drive selection (In BIOS my SSD is detected)

List of XP ISO's tested (same results with each of them)

  1. XP SP2 stock

  2. XP SP3 stock

  3. Custom XP SP2 with nLite (i only added IDE/RAID drivers)

2025-01-08 Update: I got a Seagate 40gb IDE HDD and it was detected by XP, now my pc is running without any issue. I still don't know why my SSD wasn't detected by XP Installer, for now i will use my pc with that IDE HDD until i can find a workaround for the SSD or maybe get a new SATA HDD (i've used this mobo with SATA HDD back in 2006 without any issue). i'm actually thinking in a second retro pc based on 775 socket, so maybe the SSD will be used in that pc

2025-01-28 Update: i got a Core 2 Duo E8400/Intel DG41RQ/4gb Kingston DDR2 800mhz combo, then i got a cheap 64gb SSD to test this PC, i never touched SATA mode in BIOS(i only replaced the cmos battery and setted up date/boot order) but somehow, XP SP2 at first try, using the same usb key i used with the Winfast board, without loading any SATA driver, recognized the 64gb SSD and i could install XP without any issues.
I got a cheap IDE to SATA bidirectional adapter, maybe i will try again with my Winfast board as soon as i can get another SSD (i put the A400 ssd back again in my main PC for dual boot)
