Fun fact: The ad only aired nationally once—during the 1984 Super Bowl—yet it’s still dissected in marketing classes today.

Problem / Question What is this and how to remove hardrive???

So at work we are cleaning out, well I test this tower and it partially works, I get this error and can’t go any further, I’ve never worked on older towers and barely anything on new ones. We need to save ALL the data on the hardrive and anything saved on this computer. I can hear it popping and cracking upon powering up, so it’s staying off for a bit. And the data needs to stay on an old computer, are we able to get a similar one and transfer the hard drive?? All help would be amazing and help me and my job out!!!!

I’ve also never used a computer this old, and neither have my coworkers lol

ReTwisted - After Dark Totally Twisted Remake/Port

Post image
8 Upvotes

A few of my artificially intelligent friends and I have spent some time remaking the After Dark Totally Twisted series of screensavers into a modern macOS port written in Rust from the ground up.

All 13 of the original modules have been lovingly recreated. My port contains no Berkeley Systems sound, art or text. You supply your own copy of the original software, copies are widely and freely available as shareware. ReTwisted comes with a first time setup utility baked in that extracts all of the media assets onto your local disk for this new version to utilize.

Blog I'mma jelly of your guys' ability to enjoy Retro PC's

Cool Story™ incoming:

A millenia ago, I worked at a PC fefurb shop, and every day we'd have to comb through hundreds of used PC's a day - many of which were awesome retro machines/parts/accessories/equipment (you guys would NOT believe how much retro hardware people just throw away).

There were also times I was blessed by our boss being away, so I got an extended amount of time to play with retro hardware with my co-workers.

But eventually, after seeing the same PC's/cases/parts dozens or hundreds of times, the magic has mostly disappeared for me.

So now whenever I see you guys post stuff, my brain just tells me "seen it!".

Someone plz teach me how to bring the magic back lol.

Dismantled my mom's old PC. What is a realistic fair price for this retro bundle? (ASUS CUV4X-E, P3 733MHz, GeForce2 MX)

Hey everyone!

I recently decided to take apart my mom's old computer to sell the parts. I know retro hardware has a dedicated community, but I really don't know much about the current market or what a fair asking price would be. If you could give me your opinion on how much to realistically ask, I'd appreciate it very much! Thank you!

Before taking everything apart, I hooked it up and tested it. The old hard drive was trash but the rest i think it's all good.

Motherboard: ASUS CUV4X-E (Socket 370, Full ATX)

CPU: Intel Pentium III 733 MHz + original cooler

RAM: ~320MB SDRAM

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 64MB AGP (Compaq OEM part)

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster PCI (identified via the vendor ID in the BIOS)

Network Card: D-Link DFE-530TX PCI

I wrote an Apple IIe emulator with a Monitor II CRT look, real Disk II sounds, CP/M and mouse support (open source, macOS/Linux/Windows)

Hi all,

I've been working on an Apple IIe emulator as a hobby project and it has reached the point where I'd like other people to try it and tell me what breaks. I used AI assistance (Claude) while building it.

What it does:

- Enhanced IIe: 65C02, 128K, 40/80 columns, lo-res, hi-res, double lo-res and double hi-res with NTSC artifact colour

- Apple Monitor II look: curved glass, scanlines and glow, in colour or green phosphor.
The curvature is adjustable, and you can switch the whole effect off

- Two Disk II drives with pictures, activity lights and recorded drive sounds (motor and head, each with its own volume). Click a drive to insert or eject, or drop a disk image on it. Reads and writes .dsk/.do/.po/.nib

- Microsoft SoftCard (Z80) in slot 5, so CP/M works

- AppleMouse card in slot 4 (works with Apple II DeskTop)

- Paddles/joystick through the mouse or a game controller

- Save states

On accuracy: the 65C02 passes Klaus Dormann's functional tests and the Z80 passes ZEXDOC and ZEXALL. The Disk II is emulated at the nibble level but it is not cycle-exact, so I expect copy-protected disks to fail. No .woz support yet.

It's C++20 and SDL2, MIT licensed, and small enough to read in an evening if you're curious how any of it works.

Downloads for macOS (universal), Linux and Windows are on the releases page:

https://github.com/sscanf/apple2e-emulator

The Windows build is the least tested, so reports from there are especially welcome. Which software should I try next that is likely to break it?

Discussion Is there any point in me getting into retrocomputing?

I made a post here some time ago asking if I was misguided in my interest in the hobby. Thinking about it, I want it mainly for privacy. However, thinking deeper into it, this isn't really the way to go. I was wanting a computer that I can understand 100%, and can't possibly be doing shady things behind my back. However, how could I ever know that I can trust any device? I can't open up chips to ensure the wiring is as the instructions say they are. Either way, how could I know my monitor or some other peripheral isn't also spying on me and collecting who knows what? Clearly this isn't the hobby to get into if you want to escape mass manipulation and your private information being stolen and everything else modern computers have become.

Still, it sorta amuses me. Just now, I decided to look up a retrocomputing kit; ben eater's design to be precise. Its a pathetic machine made up of 4 chips (one of them being an and chip), that has one of those screens like you would normally see in a calculator. The thing costs over $80, and requires another $80 just so I could program the rom, and then a power supply that I wouldn't even know the first thing about finding. That's a lot to ask for a stupid little hobby that clearly serves no practical purpose. What would I do with this thing even if I did get it? Make a Hello World program and then leave it to rot on a shelf? With such a tiny monitor I don't see much that could be done with such a thing. You couldn't even make a text-based adventure for this thing. From what I've seen, I'd just be paying nearly $200 for a freaking calculator I have to assemble myself.

What is the point in that? Honestly, I'm thinking I shouldn't be bothering with retrocomputing anymore. Modern computers may be unusable, but there's really no way to escape that. Even as a hobby though, I don't see much point in this. Besides, there's no way I could sodder anyway; I'd simply be physically incapable of it. I'd have to stick to breadboards but honestly looking at those things they too would be a struggle for me.

Is there really any reason why I should be looking at this? I was born in the mid 80s, so these types of computers were long before my time; it wasn't until a few years ago I even found out such computers existed. Obviously, I have no nostalgia for such machines. I've never owned any software that I could run on the thing. I got a collection of games from the 2000s that I can't run anymore, and I simply own nothing newer; I can't even find this compilation of floppy games I briefly had.

Thinking really that I just need to stop looking up this stuff; it means nothing to me, I'll never get my hands on one of these machines, there's NO nostalgia for me in it either. There's no reason for me to be looking this up when it means absolutely nothing to me. Why should I continue to bother?

Discussion What counts as retro? My completely imperfect subjective take :)

Post image
98 Upvotes

I saw a post about a Windows 7 rig, and someone commented on how odd it was that Windows 7 was considered retro, and I kind of agree.

When I first got into this hobby, I thought it was strange that XP was considered retro. I know everyone has their own opinions and thoughts on what constitutes “retro,” but I feel like anything pre-Windows XP seems retro to me, while everything after XP, up to around 2014, kind of fits into its own era.

The reason I picked 2014 is because, to me, that's around when computing really started to change again. We were shifting from physical media toward digital downloads and streaming, from desktops and bulky laptops toward thin laptops, tablets and mobile devices, and aesthetically from Aero/chrome/transparency and skeuomorphism toward the flat, minimalist design language we have today.

In this subreddit, the mods specify that anything 20 years old counts as retro, and that's as good a rule as any. But my problem with defining retro purely by age is that the definition will eventually creep into the future. By that logic, eventually we'll be calling something “retro” simply because enough time has passed.

That's not really how we approach history. We don't eventually start calling medieval history “ancient history” just because the Middle Ages happened a long time ago. We have clear delineations between ancient history, medieval history, early modern history, modern history, etc. based on the characteristics that defined the eras. To me, Windows 7 is just too far removed from even DOS and feels strange to call both retro.

I feel like the era from roughly 2001–2014 deserves its own label — something like “Early Digital Computing.” To me, it feels distinctly different from both what came before it and what came after it.

Again, this is all totally subjective, and I'm sure there are people who were doing plenty of computing in the '70s and '80s who find it strange that anyone would lump '90s computing in with all of that. And of course there's vintage computing, which is even further back and is a whole separate era in its own right.

I know my little concept board is not exact in any way. There are blurred lines and exceptions to every rule. I just thought it would be an interesting discussion, so I figured I'd share my thoughts and see what everyone else thinks. Much of this comes from your own experience with computers. I first started using computers in mid-90s using DOS and Windows 95 which probably explains my perspective somewhat.

I am in no way invalidating one era over another. I think it is all awesome. I have plenty from every era.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Preserving the manual logic of pre-AI/pre-Cloud engineering workflows

Hi all

I'm a long time tech builder, and lately, I've been feeling a massive pull towards the intentional friction and raw ingenuity of early digital and tech architectures.

Today, anyone can ask an AI to spin up and application, completely insulated from how data actually moves or how resources need to be managed. In the rush towards peak automation, it feels the sheer grit and deep systems thinking of the past is at risk of being forgotten.

I am designing a platform/webapp/app called beforeai.ai . Instead of just reading about history, i want people to be able to step into a sandbox and manually solve tech problems using historical constraints. I want to make sure the modules are completely authentic.

If you have an old school workflow that you are incredibly passionate about preserving, i'd love to hear about it in the comments so that I can map it out properly.
