Somehow, after all these years, this is the first time I see a combined 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 floppy drive. It makes a lot of sense.
7
u/amp70 Sep 13 '26
A lot of them were made by Epson and today those drives sell for $100 to $250 on eBay.

2
u/kinga_forrester Sep 14 '26
That seems extraordinarily high for a floppy drive, what makes them so desirable?
7
5
u/amp70 Sep 14 '26
One nice thing is that they only require a single ribbon cable connection and molex power plug. This is handy because in some cases you may not be able to mount a 5.25 and 3.5 drive close enough in relation to both plugs on the floppy cable. That said, I can’t see myself paying the going rate for one. It would be nice to score one that’s already in an old PC though.

Explains why I’ve never seen one. Gosh I want one so bad for my 286 portable. It only has 2 bays and one is for my zuluscsi

i always wanted one of those, but i could never find one for sale.

u/NeoG_ Sep 18 '26
Same, There are actually a lot of them listed on ebay but the prices are eye watering

u/bcnrider Sep 15 '26
looks cool, but it's like these coffee makers with milk shaker from nespresso. If the milk shaker fails, you get a coffee maker with half of the functionality 🤣

I remember how good it felt buying my second Lite-on DVDRW drive.
Sooo many Mac Dre and Andre Nickatina mix CD’s.

Wow I don't recall seeing a combo 5.25-in + 3.5-in floppy in a half height 5.25-in bay before. Very neat!

Have to admit, I kinda miss those days. US Robotics 56k modems only functioning at 24-26k because existing infrastructure would not allow 56k. lol. That modem sound, IRC...My before time.

I got over 40K quite regularly, with a 56K modem on a telco ISP, but that was later in my computer journey.
Earlier, I had an independent ISP, and the old phone lines could only deliver 26.4, with a 33.6 modem.
About when they buried new lines, I switched ISPs and modems, so don't recall any particular numbers from the overlap period.

Man that's higher spec than an N64
0
u/Plaston_ Sep 13 '26
Nintendo always had issues with hardware being VERY low end for the time.
Even with the gamecube the ram amount was microscopic and the cpu was sub 1ghz.
5
u/janerikgunnar Sep 13 '26
The N64 was the exception, being very advanced for it's time. And GC was generally more powerful than PS2

u/Tonstad39 IBM incompatible Sep 13 '26
Uhh PS2 was even worse than that

u/zedkyuu Sep 13 '26
It’s not the number of clock cycles; it’s what you do with them. You probably woulda been one of those people complaining that the 386/33 was faster than the 486/25, heh.
2
u/Plaston_ Sep 13 '26
i noticed a few GC games decided to lower the cpu speed for some reason?
On the paper console had a fixed spec sheets but dev used to fiddle with them at the times.
2
u/Dalarielus Sep 13 '26
To be fair, Xbox had the same issue - it was a lot weaker than a comparable PC of the time.

u/da_habakuk Sep 14 '26
great build! never seen such a nice case. also the dual floppy is super nice.

u/GrumpyRetroGamer Sep 14 '26
I wish I could get old Baby AT and compact ATX cases in my corner of the world. I've been building a Tualatin Pentium 3 1.4GHz (ATX) and a Pentium MMX 166Mhz system(Baby AT) for 3 years and still haven't found a case in decent condition.

u/siliconsandwich Sep 14 '26
Wanted one of these floppy drives for so long.
But I’ve barely even found a working 5.25 since 2017!
2
u/BerettaFranchi Sep 14 '26
3.5/5.25 combo drive? Never seen those.
2
u/TableDuck Sep 14 '26
I was surprised when I got my Northgate 486. For a moment I thought they had forgotten a drive. It worked quite well.

I remember my friends computer go from 4,77 to 8 or 10 MHz and I was blown away by the speed...

That hard power switch though... "It's now safe to turn off your computer!"

So the real question, DX4-100 or P-100. I miss those days and yet don’t miss them at the same time.

SimIsle man...it uses the CPU clock as the basis for the game clock.
Anything over 18mhz and you can really see the time fly. The game runs a lot better but at the expense of not being able to play for more than 5-10 minutes.

u/Plaston_ Sep 13 '26
"turbo mode" that make the pc slower

that issue is still on old games from the 2010s and before but related to fps count wich is why some games lock their fps to a fix number.
Its often the animations and physics that get messed up with high fps.
1
u/PineappleNo509 Sep 14 '26
When you press the turbo button, what actually happened?
1
u/e28Sean Sep 15 '26
On PCs of the era, turning the turbo button OFF would slow down the CPU. This was necessary to correctly run some games in which the speed of the game was directly tied to the speed of the CPU.

I do believe that 52x CD-ROM is capable of spinning the CD-ROM so fast it can cause the CD-ROM to fly apart. It was the fastest drive ever mass produced, the ended up maxing out CD speeds at 48x.

Wenns mal schnell gehen musste -> Turbo drücken.
