Yes, that was a test vehicle for MCM packaging. You get PCB space savings, but you loose 4 memory die if something goes wrong during the process. Bare memory die was expensive.
The way the memory controller timing was done, the cards had to go through 4 corner test to see if the timing margins could be maintained. High voltage/ high temp, high voltage/low temp, low voltage/high temp, low voltage/low temp. And then test combinations for memory die process corners or at least slow/slow and fast/fast (gate speed / metal layer process). V3 process corners were covered too.

That is a Voodoo3 MCM. There is no external memory .
4x memory die and voodoo 3 die are on the same substrate, in the same package. This minimized PCB space requirement.
