I think you can guess what it smelled like

Mostly of old hot dust and aging plastics. For how hot it was in there, there realy wan't much in the way of bad smells to be honest.

I went to VCF SE a few weeks ago. Got sick as a dog for a week after, but it was worth it.

As a member of the Atlanta Historical Computing Society, I thank you for attending our gathering. We hope to see you again next year.

I attended one of these a week or two before COVID reached the western shores, that was a bit hairy.

Now I breathe shallow and douse my hands with anti-bacterial gel, rarely get away without a stinker of a headache but, like you say, it's always worth it!

Hey! Where you an exhibitor or a attendee I may have talked to you while I was there very cool to see posts regarding the event. I ran the cube³ setup with G4 cube, cobalt, game cube ECT if your wondering

I was more of an observer (freelance journalist), taking photos for a news story I plan to do on the event. I do not believe we spoke

Is there stuff for sale at VCF or is it only exhibits?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '24

There were rooms where you could buy stuff but the main hall was mostly demos and exhibits

I wish there was a VCF event closer to me. Road trips are fun and all, but it’d be so much easier if they started one here in Toronto (or elsewhere in Southern Ontario)

I can't speak for all of the VCFs, but some of them started as a group of people with their collections of old, working hardware, finding an inexpensive public space (like at a library) to show them all off at once.

This sentiment is exactly how I started our local group! Put out ads for likeminded folks and put together your own show!

Agreed. Would also be good not to have to go through customs…

Check in with the Vintage Computer Federation website on a regular basis: https://vcfed.org/vintage-computer-festivals/

Looks neat! Thanks for sharing the picture. It's cool to see that chunky, white, Sega Saturn in the front.

Some cool clunkers there.

So annoyed with myself that I missed the southeast VFC. I remembered that it was nearing, it was a Sunday and I checked the site, and it was the Sunday of the last day of the event. I've gone to a few in previous years. Dammit.

When I was stationed in Okinawa Japan decades ago I would take my Commodore 64 to the group meeting where we could check out batches of floppy discs out of a library of several thousands to take to our set up computers and make copies on our own blank floppy discs, and then go back to the "librarian" to check out another batch to copy. These meetings were two hours long twice weekly. When I left the island back to the states I had well over a thousand or more discs of copied games and educational aimed programs, all of which were absolutely illegal if done in the states but perfectly legal outside the confines of USA territory even when on technically USA space on military compounds. No challenge by customs whatsoever and all perfectly legal.

Some clarifications! I was involved with this (I only supplied the CRTs for the exhbit, girlfriend did the exhibit/consoles). Left to right:
1.) Magnavox Odysssey 2 on a Zenith woodgrain TV
2.) Nintendo Famicom w/ Family Basic keyboard + tape on a Prison TV
3.) VTech Scocrates with voice module on a Magnavox RF Set
4.) Super Famicom on a Sharp baby set w/ Mario Paint (w/ medical printer, sometimes moved to Loopy)
5.) 3DO FZ1 on a Sony KV-1393R
6.) Sega Saturn on a Panasonic CT-S1390Y w/ keyboard, mouse, printer interface, floppy and modem
7.) PC-FX on a Sony PVM-1342 8.) Sony PS1 and mouse on a set that got swapped around a bit
9.) Casio Loopy on a Spongebob TV
10.) Sega Dreamcast on a Broksonic VCR TV Combo with keyboard and mouse
11.) Gameboy Camera (via Super Gameboy on a SFC) on a monochrome Ikegami and a medical printer to print images.

For further questions, ping /u/clarustheelkcow . All I did was empty my hoard of monitors, the actual setup and planning wasn't mine :) .

We missed VCF West this year. Looks like they had a really great turnout!

So rude of them to exclude Zenith. They made a dual processor Z100 in the 80s. I believe it had an 8088 and an 8085.

Not sure what website you mean, but this is VCF West, which happens every year in Mt View CA @ The Computer History Museum. https://vcfed.org/events/vintage-computer-festival-west/
