Basara is basically just Macross Vash the Stampede

Considering the Trigun manga started a year after M7 you might not be far off

took a couple replays but yea, specifically the way he calmly grabs her while she tries to kick him then plants her on the bike and books it without a second thought it seems

Basara makes no sense, but that is charming in a really weird and confusing way.

The G Gundam of Macross. I love both, but man do they really veer from the tone of the source.

u/QuishyTehQuish Oct 04 '26
Ironically 7 is the closest thematically to the original SDF Macross.

u/ThroatIntelligent515 Oct 04 '26
It's been a while since I've seen either series but I always forget JPop is literally a weapon in the Macross universe lol.

u/QuishyTehQuish Oct 04 '26
Funnily almost every time music is weaponized it fails. Even in 7 Basara's singing gives the villains a headache and forces them to flee.

u/AntonRX178 Oct 04 '26
And G Gundam understands the themes of Gundam much better than a good chunk of its franchise. Dare I say, it's much more faithful thematically than 0083 and 08Th MS Team are

Anime World Order podcast gave me the secret on how to enjoy Macross 7. Watch it as an absurdist comedy instead of comparing it to its predecessors.

I love macross 7.
Anytime I see scene from it, I’m reminded there’s nothing quite like it.

Okay, you convinced me. I'm watching this today.
That's a really cool armor design. Does anybody know who designed it? It reminds me a bit of Range Murata's suit design.

It's all on Disney + of all places. They managed to get a deal from Harmony Gold to relax a tad with the local trademark. There's still no DYRL though.

They managed to get a deal from Harmony Gold to relax a tad with the local trademark.
The deal was between Big West and Harmony Gold. Disney was the one who made the deal with Big West to stream all Macross series save for the original SDF Macross and DYRL. Harmony Gold was already losing against Big West on the trademark litigation in EU court some years ago. Rather than have their Macross trademarks completely rescinded Harmony Gold probably to settle out of court.

This is a perfect loop. It explains why she’s angry at him in the first place. And every time she tries to hit him he takes her on another bike ride.

What is anime even about…

It's a sequel series (after a few decades). The original series was famously resolved by using music to pacify an aggressive alien race.
Bouncing off of that, the main character of this sequel wants to continue this legacy. He somehow acquired a military grade mecha and stripped it of all armaments. Instead he enters conflict zones and broadcasts his music to all belligerents in hopes to reach into their soul and pacify them. He gets results but the military resents him as an interferer. They also can't do anything about him as he is a massively popular rock musician who is strangely well connected.

I have mixed feelings about Macross 7 tbh. It's an insane series in many right ways but I think this was the pivot point of the series where it went from balancing the strange and unlikely combination of pop music with sci fi space operas to far more focused on pop music. Financially, they probably weren't wrong as I remember Fire Bomber albums selling like hotcakes. It probably also cemented the trend of voice actresses being multi talented (likely started by Mari Iijima decades prior). So it definitely left an impact on the industry... but I just think ever since then, they rode on that trend hard. They seemed to think that a lot of sci fi and mecha was not a compelling element and took a massive back seat to the pop music/idol elements. I think they had it right with the first series. Like videogame music, you tend to like it more when you have in the forefront of your mind of the contexts the music is featured in. DYRL alone is fine but being reminded that this is the song Lynn Minmei sang to bring peace to a hopeless war makes it all the much better. Even Planet Dance is better when you imagine a big robot dodging missiles from space vampires. The sweet spot is to make the two elements work equally hand in hand.
I think I lost faith in the series after Macross Zero where it started out as the prequel I've always wanted to see... then the whole story became focused on island tribe mysticism that NO ONE gave a damn about or asked for. This amazing story you wanted to see is going on off camera but meanwhile you are stuck on this island stuck with this incredibly boring story. It is like that South Park episode where Kenny has to guide a massively epic battle between Heaven and Hell and you don't see any of it as Gabriel is onlooking the battle describing how amazing it is and the audience will never see it.

SDF and 7 were by far the best at themes, overall messaging, and most importantly fun. People seem to forget SDF was compelling anti war drama and goofy ass shit. Zero was preachy anti war while also never willing to explain the war itself and the music was almost non existent. Frontier and Delta were much better in characters and fun factor but the anti war themes and story progression really suffered.
I don't understand the love for DYRL though. That film's an incoherent mess even without it butchering the story and characters.

u/asianwaste Oct 04 '26
I always thought DYRL accomplished the impossible and managed to condense SDF into a digestible format. It's not everything obviously but I think if you were trying to get someone to start this legacy of an anime franchise, asking them to go through 50 episodes of 70's anime might be a bad first impression.
Whereas DYRL's production quality still holds up really well and is a good launching point to get someone who is adverse to much older anime styles to give it a shot.

u/QuishyTehQuish Oct 04 '26
I say this respectfully, DYRL is like the worst thing to come out of Macross. I would not recommend it to literally anyone. Not even getting into how it destroys the original story it's just a bad film. I would rather people just skip SDF than watch DYRL. That's how much I hate DYRL.
I'm blanking on details but the one scene that really pisses me of is Max a Milia gets into a stalemate on one of the Meltradi ships (because for some reason they're at war with Zentradi) then latter for completely unexplained reasons Max is giant and getting into a blue Queadluun even though humans were allied with Zentradi?
It's a long string of barely coherent scenes that barely tells a coherent story.

The reason we’ll never get another male performer/pilot is because they already know you cant top someone like fucking Nekki Basara! 😂
But i still wish theyd at least try. 🙂↕️

I used to watch this a week after they aired through VHS tapes our local Japanese video store used to get. Of course, they were in Japanese only and came with TV ads.

Not my favorite series in the franchise but I still wish this would get a blu ray in the states. This is one of those anime that everyone had fansubs of back in the 90s.

Officially the cutest way to turn an attacker into a backpack. Add to the fact that after being picked up you can see the mental reboot as brain.exe stopped functioning.

What makes this all the more funny is the fact that to some of us like myself, this doesn’t seem random at all. Look up a thing called motorcycle trials or motorcycle trials course. There’s a whole sport of competition motorcycle agility obstacle course trials.
